An Ultimate Daily Driver: Stagea RS260
By Ben Schaffer
The Real JDM
I’ve always had a bit of a crush on the Stagea wagons with the GT-R RB26DETT motor. Something is undeniably awesome about driving what is essentially a GT-R wagon! It was always somewhat surprising to me that Nissan decided to have GT-R powered wagons produced in the first place. I’ve always found it to be an odd choice that such an epic motor as the RB26 is found only in a wagon and of course the GT-R itself. You’d think that they would have perhaps used the RB26 in a convertible variant and especially in a sedan competitor to the Toyota Chaser, yet they chose only a wagon over those more conventional options. Perhaps that particular point in itself defines a Japanese and European desire for fast wagons whereas in the US fast wagons are an oxymoron. What else could better explain this and the fact that the Audi RS6 Wagon features a twin turbo Gallardo related V10 motor, yet there is no Audi in the US whatsoever that utilizes that incredible V10 twin turbo power plant reserved solely for the European RS6 wagon.

While the 260RS Stagea Autech featured GT-R power it was still undeniably a Stagea wagon externally…that is until Masa started making R34 front end conversions. At that point the line gets further blurred and the car becomes a step closer to a R34 GT-R Wagon.
If I could get one of these legalized in the US it would be an ideal choice for a daily driver. I still love these just like I did years ago. In Japan they’ve done the equivalent thing with the newer Stagea and R35 GT-R exterior but without the power plant swap which defeats the purpose for me. The fact that these are truly GT-R powered from Nissan is the incredible feat that is hard to match elsewhere with aftermarket wagon mashups.
Here’s a few more pictures of one in the UK that was up for sale last year…

as the RS260 was actually made by autech you can argue that Nissan never did RB26 outside of a GTR. Also it can be said they did do a sedan with the RB26.. in R33 model Autech made a 4 door GTR.

A R34 converstion is cool looking. The GT-R on the grille is like putting SS emblems on Chevy. Other than that, I like the idea maybe some US cars will get a swap now. but a wagon, Why? A station Wagon should have 3rows to hold the family. Wagons these days are a waste for time, money, looks and wieght. Jus my $.02

@kylestlouis he said it’s the only other vehicle besides the GTR that has the RB26 engine. And a 2 door vehicle isn’t a sedan.

Might wanna check your facts, Nissan did use the rb motor in a sedan, the gts-t which comes either in a 2 door or 4 door. It’s rear wheel drive, not quite as powerful, but none the less its a sedan with an rb that competes with the chaser

The only thing that could make this wagon look any better is R34 tail lights instead of the assemblys that are on the wagons now. LOVE IT!

As an owner of my dream car, a 2007 Subaru Legacy GT Limited Wagon, I can say that from 2005-2007 the US did have a fast wagon.
Throw in the awesome Volvo V70R and Dodge Magnum SRT8 and you can see at least they gave it a shot.
Too many American’s want what wagons provide, but think the term wagon means there is wood paneling on the side. Enter the SUV, CUV, Crossover, Sport Cross, etc.

R34′s are definitely my favorite cars of all time, and I [love] the Stagea. Kind of like a superduper big brother version of my old Sentra. Wagon power!
