American LeMans Goes Green

Last year, the American LeMans Series announced race teams would be able to use alternative fuels. The series has always focused on developing new technologies for tomorrow's consumer automobiles, and the use of alternative fuels has become an area of increased focus for both consumers and manufacturers. Last year's program allowed the use of E10 gasoline (10% ethanol and 90% gas) as well zero-sulfur diesel fuel, which Audi used with supreme success in it's new R10 TDI prototype racer. Rolling into the 2008 season, series President Scott Atherton announced further developments into ALMS "green initiative," including the introduction of an E85 option (85% ethanol, 15% gasoline) and also revealed they're exploring bio-diesel. With Audi's successful TDI campaign, and Peugeot entering their diesels for next season, I think we're going to see more of these popping up. Sometimes, you just can't beat the amazing torque and efficiency of a turbo oil-burner!
