Would You Drive On 30s?
By Rob
Editor-in-Chief
I was exchanging e-mails with Jerry Garrett of the New York Times this weekend and he was asking me about the 30 inch wheels that were so prevalent at SEMA this year. He wanted to know if they could take any real driving. Not knowing I was going to be quoted, I told him that personally I wouldn't want to drive on anything over 20s (though I offered to put him in touch with Myles from DUB, who is better qualified to talk about 30s).
So would you drive on 30s? Or are they just for show?

Ghetto culture will rue the day it created these detestable vehicles. Creators and owners of these vile aberration's will one day fall upon their knees and beg for the forgiveness of Henry Ford... but the Lord of Automobiles will show no mercy. For Henry Ford created automobiles for all purposes of good: transportation, recreation, sport, and show. A hi-rise serves none of these purposes. For it is a foul and twisted perversion that is much like homosexuality. I have not gone too far and but will go further... hi-rises are in fact the root of all current homosexuality. Heed my warning all who dabble in the perverseness of donks, boxes, and bubbles. Your day of penitence is coming and Henry Ford will spit upon your worthless faces and and judge you as the human trash you are.

I gotta say if I'm gonna ride on 30's, it better be on a car that was built to house them in massive wheel wells. I can see a car getting better fuel economy on the highways and freeways with larger rolling wheels, but without some cushion between road and rim, I wouldn't want to ride long in the vehicle housing 30's. I must also think of the cost for specialized brakes for a wheel size that large. Better off slapping semi truck brakes with a jake brake on 'em. All I ask is the 30's better have a car within 1/2 a foot to the ground...otherwise it better be a 4WD with stepsides.

No. I'd rather spend that kind of money making the car look better. ;) The 30's are put on for show. It caught your eye, didn't it? I think the manufacturer has achieved what they set out to do then. For show.

I personally don't think I'd ever go over 22s, and they would fit with no mods on my 65 Impala....
but ride quality on all big rims sucks, and I do not EVER understand the mentality of "it's just for show" cause damn it if you droppin mad $$$ on a car... f'in drive the thing!!! So they should at least wisely promote HUGE brakes... so someone needs to come up with color forged rotors or something, cause a 30 rim should rock at least a 15" rotor setup....

If my ride was 30 feet long, 10 feet wide and 6 feet high, I wouldn't hesitate to put 30's under it for regular use.

I wouldn't even roll on 20's. Call me old fashioned, but I'd rather not waste that much money on something just because it looks "cool" and is popular at the moment.
I tend to burn through tires pretty quickly and I'd rather not foot the bill for a set of r30's every time.

I would put them on an SUV or truck type video but would only put them on a car if it was strictly for show

no way i hate any car with wheels so big you have to lift it or run rubber bands for tires either than the wheels the car looks nice but with them it looks really stupid

No way, I think they look dumb on anything, except that Caprice with the Phantom front end, haha that's sick. But that's clearly just a show car. Anyone think it's ever going to actually make it to people putting the 42" Lexani's on their rides?

All show and no go. Even if I had the money to drop on a set of 30's there is no way I'd do it. Weight is an issue, tire size is an issue, road conditions would become an issue.... that even glosses over the fact that I think wheels that big look cartoonish and silly to me.

I have had several sets of "oversized" rims and with each set i have noticed how the ride quality, braking distance etc. has changed for the worse. I love how my current vehicle looks with 24's but I always enjoy swapping the stocks back on for the winter for ride quality purposes. 30's may look good (on SUV's) but i bet thats all they are good for...looks. Besides with those skinny tires those rims wouldn't last a week without damage on the Michigan roads around here.

People just cruise down there block and look cool. After you buy 30's most people are lucky they can afford gas. Look at any rap video... these cars dont hardly move once they get to that central hang out spot. Pop the trunk, blast the stereo, play porn on your DVD player. Wait for everyone to leave so they dont see you driving at 5 mph swerving around every crack and road dimple. Looks people, all looks.

I've gotta think the rotational mass (because even the lightest 30" has got to be HEAVY!) would make stopping (not to mention starting) really poor. Other than that, I've never seen a 30 without anything but the thinnest of tires, which has to mean hitting a speedbump would be a big problem. 30s belong on oddities and showcars, not the open road.

Nope, I would not ride on 30" wheels. That size of wheel would seem to pose a safety issue when braking or moving thru traffic. I would like to see a crash test done on a vehicle equiped with 30" wheels. And while your at it measure the braking distance versus a normal set of wheels.
