2008 Season Off to a Great Start!

By Jason Siu

Tunerzine

This was my first off season not working for a publication full time, and I have to say, it was a relief. What many don't realize is how difficult it can be to fill content for a publication during the off season. This year, however, there were a lot of exciting things happening, including the development of the Scion tC drift car that I am sure many of you have already heard about.

It is interesting that Scion is getting involved with the sport of drifting. Sure, it raises brand awareness, and gets another group of potential consumers interested in Scions, but does this mean that they will be producing a RWD sports coupe? With their continued support in all facets of the industry, however, I can only hope other manufacturers take notes and realizes that the aftermarket industry is here to stay.

This past weekend was the Formula D season opener, as well as the Battle of the Imports season opener. Battle of the Imports is making a statement this year, capturing the attention of many pro teams and doing a full blown schedule supporting the racers. They've gotten many sponsors on board, and it's important this year that drag racing picks up some steam and continues to grow.

This year will be interesting for the sport compact crowd. We have Time Attack events taking the West Coast by storm, and it will be nice to see all facets of sport compact motorsports working together to help the industry as a whole grow. Unfortunately (or fortunately!) for me, I won't be traveling much this year, but I'm always keeping my eyes on the forums to see what's going on. Race weekends are always exciting watching my favorite forums update with live results.

They should just start something with KIA. They are about the same lines. When Scion came around it bumped Hyundai up a notch.

Man , i hate that , now why wouldn't this TC come to state side , i mean is a great car and u can find parts for this things every where even in K&B Toys. It is cheap and is a great plataform if u want to start drifting , cuz all that people can buy so they can drift are 240 and i mean is a great car , but to many mods on the thing and u my friend r goin to fail smug test!

The tC definitely should be made RWD and have a bare bones performance model that can easily be upgraded for cheap to make some impressive numbers.

If all TCs were RWD civic sis', GTIs', Cobalts, and any other type of sport compact wouldn't sell b/c the RWD TC would make it the biggest thing in the import tuning scene, this is the way a TC should be made bring back the spirit of the Tureno

The drift scene is HUGE these days and nearly every kid would drool over these if they have a low price tag. A new rwd car can't be found for under 20k so this car would literally own the market. I can't understand why they wouldn't be selling it in the usa?

This is this car they should have built in the first place! Scion messed up big time by making it a FWD in production. This car would have been waaaay better with initial sales had it been introduced as a RWD 4cyl car.

I'd also like to add that nissan messed up as well. The altima coupe should be RWD.

The reason why 240's are so great in competitive drifting is because they are lightweight, RWD, 4 cyl cars.... its the winning combo to compete and all the companies have blatantly missed this.

I think it will do amazing. a RWD car that is affordable and build to take a drift beating would be perfect. forget the luxuries, make it fast for cheap, and easily upgradeable for the aftermarket guys. the only RWD cars that are newer are far out of reach for the 18-28 year old market. think lightweight, not luxury.
