Tokyo Drift Mustang Shows Up On eBay

If you got here from the newsletter, you're probably looking for this story: what car did you drive in high school?
There's more '68 Mustangs on eBay than you can shake a stick at, but this one purports to be the Nissan-powered pony used in Tokyo Drift, the third installment in The Fast and the Furious. You'll recall that it's running a turbocharged straight-six from a Skyline GTR, and the seller claims the car's got about $100K in mods altogether. The hilarious thing about the auction is that the seller isn't allowed to name the movie in which the car appeared—he's "under contract" not to name the mysterious film, and we're left scratching our heads over whether it's Tokyo Drift or any one of all those other movies featuring Nissan-powered Mustangs. Also interestingly, the seller says that with the turbo'd six, the 'Stang is positively sedate, "rather than the beast that the big V-8 cars sometimes become." Hmmm. The auction is climbing up over $28K with the reserve not met. Check it out!

Just what we need, a Nissan powered 'tang. What's next a Morris Minor with a super-charged Audi engine ?

The car is likely a 67, the differences were the side "c" scoops which were louvered in 67 and smooth in 68, 67's did not have side marker lights, which became federally mandated on all 1968 model year vehicles and therefore present on 68 Mustangs, and 67's had a 3-spoke steering wheel with large center pad, while the 68's had a horizontal bar style with a horn ring. The other major difference is that 67's had a horzontal bar across the grille while 68's had simply the pony and corral. This car has Shelby style side scoops so that cue is null and void, same thing goes for the steering wheel and grille. That leaves the remaining cue the fact that this car does not have the side marker lights, unless of course they were shaved for a cleaner look. So, in the end, it could still be a 68.
As for the movie, the Silvia that the engine was removed from was a highly modified drift car owned by Hahn, which Shawn wrecks in his first foray into drifting. After DK and his crew attack Hahn's shop and Hahn is killed, the cops seize everything except the wrecked Silvia out back. Shawn and his crew then grab Shawn's dad's Mustang and the RB26 Skyline motor to create the ultimate drift car for Shawn's final loser-leaves-town mountain race against DK.
I am a hardcore Mustang enthusiast and when I first heard of this car being built before the movie came out, I thought it was blasphemy. However, in the context of the movie, I thought it made perfect sense considering small or big block V8 parts probably arent exactly plentiful in Tokyo, and they had a donor car to do the swap.
I probably wouldnt attempt this swap myself unless I had a ton of support from people who know both cars well. Though of course people drop fuel injected 5.0 Mustang engines into the classics all the time, so I can't see the principle being tremendously different.

Does no one notice "The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift" sticker on the front windsheild. Clearly it's the movie car. The studio doesn't care if it's the right engine name or not, they will name it what ever they want. NO ONE GIVES A S*** ABOUT THE REAL SPECS IN THE MOVIE.

yeah that was an RB pulled from that S15 not an SR20. The S15 they had in the movie i think was someones shop car so it already had a RB26 in it and not a SR20

Silvia S15 does not come with a RB26DETT people they have a SR20DET. Where are my true import fans?? All these ramblings are just crazy!

You think this is bad, anyone seen the trailer for the new fast and furious movie? They destroy a grand national in it... that is sacreligious.
Sep 5, 2008 7:57:23 PM
It could be a 68 mustang and titled as such with a 67 hood on it. I mean that IS the ONLY difference between 67 and 68
Sep 5, 2008 7:51:58 PM
Not completely BS I have seen Silvias with RB swaps in em. So it is feasible to have pulled an RB26DETT from an S15. I personally am a detroit muscle guy, but this car gets mad points for creativity.

Ok, Toyko Drift mustang was a 67 not a 68. EBay add doesn't state the movies name.

just out of curiosity didnt the movie car have a sr20det in it???? since it came out of hans s15...... either this is a major movie flaw or this car is bs. take it or leave it but somthin dosent add up

Wasn't the car silver with stripes? And if he can't name the movie the car was in why does he have a picture of the rear interior with a shadow of a sticker that says toyko drift?

Having that gay engine in a nice muscle car is painful, Tuners are gay, stick with an american built V8.

"The winning bidder will be required to sign a release of liability and sign an agreement not to advertise the name of the movie or to name the studio should the car be resold" i really dont see how they can do this

God damn, the whole movie was fictional and the facts were jacked because MOST people out there have no idea what a skyline is much less how many turbos it has. Although it might be fun to stick a sick engine into a sick car but atleast tell the truth I say. Personally I would of preffered a 62 Camaro with a 20B. Shit I would drive arround without a hood just to show off the ridiculousness of the transplant. BTW Who has the money for this crap! why would anyone really spend so much on a suposed "tokyo Drift" car? damn with that much moolah? you can get a freggin dope cuda or a 911 from a specialist for less than 100k or even a bit more, but you can actually sell it for the same ammount or more when you're bored of it!

Its just like the 20 ft long Batmobile from the Movies in the 90s. Warner Bros owns the rights to the car, so the few that are in the publics possession, can't do jack with it except let it sit in their garage, per contract with WB.
As for everyone bitching about the engine in it, who the fuck cares?!? Its a movie car. That was part of the movie. You don't like it, buy the car and pull the motor out. Otherwise, STFU!
