Gunn High School Auto Shop

I've been teaching Auto Shop for 10 years now. I try to incorporate basic automobile maintenance with automotive history and even a bit of custom fabrication. We study all the basic systems of the car and then do some related work in the labs. Students can bring in their own cars for inspection and repair or they can help on any number of project cars that we are building or maintaining.

Pioneer 2007 Sound Build-Off

Earlier this year, the marketing guys at Pioneer challenged thirteen of its best dealers to create the ultimate sound quality demo vehicle. Each dealer was provided with a complete Premier system to be installed in their own demo vehicle, which would then be judged for installation and sound quality. They would vie for prizes and the title of Pioneer Premier Reference Series Demo Vehicle Build-Off Champion. The judging would take place at the company's Mobile Electronics Road Show in Tucson, Arizona later that spring.

Flowmaster Factory Tour

When CarDomain invited me to take a tour of the Flowmaster factory in Santa Rosa, California, I jumped at the chance. I love to talk to engineers, see how things are made, and watch the process from whiteboard through shipping. The trip to Flowmaster did not disappoint—I learned a lot about the company, a lot about exhaust, and a lot about my own car in the process.

A Tour of Benchmark Motoring

If you have a high-end car and want to upgrade your audio system, you don’t take it just anywhere. You take it to a place like Benchmark Motoring.Their team has over a hundred years of combined experience, and their client list boasts some of the biggest names in the Northwest. Benchmark has worked their magic on rides for Seahawks, Mariners and Sonics, along with Killer Paint owner Mike Lavalle. If that’s not impressive enough, they also prepare the demo cars for Microsoft Windows Automotive.

Day of the Deadening

Our subject is a 1997 Nissan 200SX SE-R. The plan is to build a large competition worthy stereo system in the car. The problem is the lack of deadening to maintain that tight uninterrupted sound. So where do you go when you need sound deadening? We went to the experts Dynamat. We contacted their highly skilled tech support team for advice on what products we need to made the dream of a quiet cabin a reality.

Grassroots Motorsports 2006 Challenge

Ever since I read about the Grassroots Motorsports $2000 Challenge I have wanted to strap a “beater” car onto a trailer and head south. $2000, $2001, $2002… Every year that passed I found it amazing how much better the cars got with only another $1 added to the budget. But as I learned this year at the $2006 GRM Challenge, it isn’t the budget that matters, it’s the amazing desire and ability of the competitors. If you want to be competitive in the Challenge, be prepared to spend hours, not dollars.

The 2006 Subaru Subie-Fest

There are two things you'll notice a lot of in the Pacific Northwest, coffee and Subarus. This probably has something to do with our twisty mountain roads, wet climate, and penchant for year-round outdoor activities. Here Subies are about as common as pick-up trucks in the Midwest. However, you can't fully grasp the popularity until they all converge on one location.

Beautiful Debris: Wrecked Exotics Interview

Beauty

People get a thrill out of seeing the rich and famous screw up. Why do you think The National Enquirer is so popular? Well, in the car world we have Wrecked Exotics. There’s no better way to start your day than by checking out a smoldering Lambo or two (they seem to explode into flames quite frequently, don’t they?). It’s only a matter of time before Paris Hilton’s McLaren get wrapped around a telephone pole.

The Snake Pit

Beauty

I recently went behind the scenes at Directed Electronics' Snake Pit installer training school in Vista, California. They offer a free tour to prospective students, and I was invited to come by and check it out. As you walk in, there's a Snake Pit mural done in a graffiti style, and their award winning Nissan Sentra show vehicle is in the lobby. They were able to squeeze it in by taking the doors and the mirrors off—it looked like a tight fit. After Anne, the School Administrator, checked me in, I got my visitors pass and went into the training facility.

Catch the Drift: Behind the Scenes at Formula D Seattle

Defensor

Our friends over at Drift-Office have been pretty darn busy lately. Bob set up shop just over two years ago and has watched it grow from a small aftermarket parts store to a full-blown tuner and fabrication shop. So when some of the big international drifting teams starting rolling into town last week for the Seattle Formula D event, guess who they turned to? After Bob had a chance to catch up on his sleep, he wrote up his experiences of the last week.

Gas Monkey Garage: Hot Rod Heaven

Defensor

Richard Rawlings won Bullrun twice—in 2004 and 2005. Last year he won the event in a very cool Model A rat rod. For this year’s race, Richard decided not to push so hard for victory, and focused more on Bullrun fundamentals; booze and babes.

Devoted Fans: Mystery Machine Replicas

Mystery Machine

Face it: the Scooby Doo cartoon has its problems. The plotlines are as formulaic as cake batter, the animation blows, and whatever spooky stuff is happening, you can be sure Old Man Withers is to blame. In the big screen version, Scooby wasn’t even a real dog. He was a big steaming pile of CGI! C’mon, didn’t anybody on that set see Babe?

The Circle of Life: a U.S. Mail Jeep Reborn

Mail_jeep

What you see here is a 1983 mail Jeep, owned by CarDomain member Nick Parisi (AKA Blusmbl) of Detroit, Michigan. Nick is crazy. He inherited this humble mail Jeep from his good friend Bob back in 2003. Bob had done a few mods to the Jeep over the years—he had dropped in a 350 out of a conversion van, added fenderwell exit headers, Performer RPM intake, Demon 650 carb, rebuilt the tranny, and performed an axle swap to a Dana 44 after blowing up the Dana 30 racing a Mustang at the Downriver cruise in 2002.

MOPAR Madness: Hot Rod Power Tour

Hot_rod

It all began innocently enough. I was vending parts at the Las Vegas Mopars At The Strip last spring when Matt Delaney walked up. We started talking, and before I knew it, he had invited me to drive his five specialty-built Pro-Touring Mopars on the Hot Rod Power Tour. Matt even offered to cover gas, food and hotel expenses! WOW! This was a car guy's dream come true! And get this, not only was Matt inviting me to drive his cars, he was actually encouraging me to put them through their paces (i.e. go really fast!). Please, somebody pinch me!

Boyd Coddington's 55 Chevy

55 Chevy

Some say the most beautiful and influential cars of the 50s era were the '55, '56 and '57 Chevrolets, better known at the Tri-5s. Throughout the years these cars have been a favorite for enthusiasts and customizers, and have been chopped, channeled, sectioned, shortened, lengthened and modified in just about every possible way. One of the most famous custom Tri-5s was a '57 Chevy called Chezoom, built in the 90s by famed hot rod builder Boyd Coddington.
