Crazy 1962 Pontiac Catalina on eBay

By Brian Lohnes

BangShift.com

A bubble-top 1962 Catalina is a damn cool car on its own. One packing a developmental all-aluminum 389 engine that was one of 14 built for Mickey Thompson is freaking sublime. This car is not a clone or recreation, it is a total what-if. What if a factory engineer was able to tinker with one of the aluminum 389s and managed to slip it into a beautiful 1962 bubble-top Catalina and hit Woodward Ave?

No expense was spared when building this car. It is packing parts from the ultra-rare Swiss Cheese Catalinas in the form of an aluminum center section packing 4.30 gears, and an aluminum bellhousing with a weird starter mount as well. Oh, we almost forgot to mention the aluminum exhaust manifolds.

So how do you feel about this car? Should the motor have been sold and used somewhere else, or was the “right thing” done in this case. It isn’t a clone and the seller is not trying to push the car as some kind of factory job. We think it could be the coolest Poncho ever.

Old School Pro Street Lives at Summit Racing!

By Brian Lohnes

BangShift.com

We found this car feature story at SummitRacing.com, and it was like we were back in the pages of Car Craft magazine in around 1989 or 1991. This ’62 Pontiac fullsize is so much like a retro Pro Street car it’s amazing, complete with huge tubs and murals in the tweed door panels. We’re not sure the guy who built it intended it as a retro car, but it sure hit us that way. Go check it out.

Gearhead Guys You Should Know: Virgil Exner

By Brian Lohnes

BangShift.com

Automotive designers have the unique ability to design and create something that has the potential to last for a very long time. Guys like Bill Mitchell, Harley Earl, Larry Shinoda were able to capture the public’s imagination with their sexy, timeless ideas.

Virgil Exner does not enjoy that same type of seemingly universal acclaim, despite the fact that his accomplishments and ideas helped shape the visual landscape of automotive design in the ‘50s. Instead, Exner is best remembered for a last batch of cars he designed for Chrysler that not only looked odd when released, they’ve not moved any closer to normal after nearly 50 years since their introduction.

Before we get into that mess, it’s important to look at the entire career of a guy who was really an American success story. Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1909, Exner was a bright kid who, throughout his childhood had a well-known fascination with art and cars. He attended Notre Dame for two years before the monetary well ran dry and he returned home to Michigan where he took a job working as a helper at an art studio.

Patrick Ernzen got some great pics of this beautiful and rare ’62 Ferrari 250 GTO at a recent Cars and Coffee in Scottsdale, Arizona. This car was raced at Sebring in 1962, where it placed second overall and first in GT with Phil Hill and Oliver Gendebien behind the wheel. I haver three more pics after the jump, but be sure to check out the full gallery with hi-res photos over at Desert-Motors.com.

What's Your Dream Garage?

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

I always admire pristine garages like this one, but I don’t think I’d ever actually manage to set up something similar for myself. It just seems too clean and neat or something–I like my garages to be a bit dirtier. But the ’62 Bonneville is sick!
