Hubert Platt’s Georgia Shaker III 1965 Ford Falcon

By Brian Lohnes

BangShift.com

Hubert Platt’s Georgia Shaker III is one of the more interesting door slammers to come out of the mid-1960s. Platt was a southern match-bash star who had tasted the sweetness of a factory deal in the early 1960s with Chevrolet. It was then that the legend of the Georgia Shaker name was born. The first was actually a 1963 Z-11 Chevy. Platt’s name is linked to Fords and that makes sense because after the Z-11 it was all blue ovals.

In 1964 he would run a Ford Thunderbolt and his name would appear frequently in the pages or regional and national drag racing publications. He was one of the best four speed men in the country and was every bit the competitor as Ronnie Sox and others of his ilk. When Ford built a few Falcons with SOHC engines in them for the exploding A/FX class, Platt naturally requested one. He was denied, but not defeated.

Platt proceeded to construct his own A/FX car in the basement of his house. As the legend goes, the working space was so confined that he actually had to roll the car outside to assemble it. The car you’ll see in the gallery is that car. The Falcon was a stock wheelbase machine when first built, but later Platt moved the rear axle forward to complete the AWB look that was so popular in this era.

Interestingly, Platt’s car was powered by a 427, but not a SOHC motor. He had to build his own wedge engine. Topped with mechanical fuel injection and backed by a four speed transmission, the car was a wheel standing terror that quickly outclassed the mighty SOHC powered factory cars. Survivor 1965 Mustang Fastback Survives A Sound Classics Test Drive

By Sam Barer

Sound Classics

You have to love sunny weekend days. These are the moments one realizes how many fantastic collector cars are hiding in and around any town.

Case and point, on my way home after delivering pictures to the owner of a Lamborghini featured in a previous Sound Classics test drive, I notice a wonderful Rangoon Red 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback peeking out from a garage. A “For Sale” sign in the window is just visible enough to catch my eye. With a heavy foot to the brakes I dart onto the side street for a little car-crazy window-shopping. (A lack of garage space and a “no-more-cars ultimatum” from my wife mean nothing comes home with me until another goes.)

Opening the door to the house is the owner, a red-blooded American hot-rodder who purchased the Mustang with the intent of retro-modding it. After buying and doing some detective work, he realized how darn original the Mustang was and didn’t have the heart to change it. Hence, he decided to sell after enjoying it for the summer and look for another less factory-correct car to hot-rod.

You have to respect a hot rodder who appreciates the integrity of original survivor cars! Continue reading after the jump!

Hemmings Find of the Day – 1965 McLaren and other movie cars

By Dan Strohl

Hemmings

All this talk of movie cars this week has me looking through the Hemmings.com classifieds for more. I see some Bentleys and Rolls-Royces owned by movie studio executives, Miley Cyrus’s Mini, Bruce Willis’s 1988 Lincoln limousine, a 1960 Ford Country Squire that appeared in Oliver Stone’s “The Doors,” a 1950 Ford Country Squire that appeared in some movie I’ve never heard of, and all of Volo’s various listings (including, apparently, the actual Miami Vice Ferrari Daytona). A Closer Look at Goliath: Bangshift.com's New Project 1965 C50 Truck

By Brian Lohnes

BangShift.com

By now you have probably seen the photos of us dragging our handsome brute of a truck home from the woods of Maine. We’ve named the truck Goliath for obvious reasons. The thing is massive. After dragging it home we have not had a lot of time to spend with it so here’s some backstory about the truck, how we got it, and what we plan to do with it.

The truck is a 1965 Chevy C50 (we previously called it a ’65). It has a GVW of 16,000 pounds. It is equipped with a 292ci straight six, four speed SM420 transmission, and large by huge Eaton rear end. We did some VIN decoding and discovered that the truck was ordered as a cab and chassis. It was built at the Oakland, California General Motors factory.

According to the guy we bought it from, the truck was owned by the phone company for many years and had a boom lift mounted to a flatbed. We’re on board with the phone company stuff but not sure about the lift part as there is no PTO on the truck and we’d think that a PTO would be necessary equipment to run the lift. Who knows, it may have been removed years ago. Continue reading at BangShift.com

Sadness on Wheels

By Brett Powers

audiobahnv8sho

We used to have a ’65 Ford Mustang GT convertible (289 4-speed A code), and it was the spark which ignited my automotive passion. A few years ago we sold it to a family member on my mom’s side. He, too, is a car guy and owns a few rarities such as a ’57 Thunderbird and a 30s Packard. What we didn’t know is he doesn’t really care for them much and just lets them sit and gather dust. When we sold the car to him years ago it was in about 90% show condition, and now it needs to be restored much more because of his neglect. He is my Mom’s step father and is around 80 years old, he is not exactly a good driver anyway, but the car is really to powerful for him and got away from him and ended up in some bushes. In speaking with my Dad we decided it would need: A new top, new exhaust (our Mustang was the car Dynomax designed their Mustang system from and it had the first), new paint, new tires (dry rotted), and an engine rebuild/clutch. I am hoping they decide to leave it to me or one of my sisters so that we can keep it in the family and save it. In speaking with them about it I don’t think they would ever get rid of it, and would more than likely leave it for me since I express the most interest in it. I think I would leave the car stock as it is a rarity and I have the Cougar for modding. Have you ever had a situation where someone neglected a good car while all you could do is watch?
