Ultra Rare Baldwin Motion 1971 Phase III GT Corvette Found and Restored

Simply hearing or seeing the words, “Baldwin-Motion” makes our little gearhead heart start to run faster, but when we were informed that the very last Phase III GT Corvette ever built by Motion was found, restored, and will be making a public debate soon, our ticker found another gear. There were only 12 GTs produced between 1969 and 1971, making them the most rare, raucous and revered cars ever to roll from the shop of Joel Rosen. These babies were certified man-eaters that had both the unique look that Rosen envisioned and a level of horsepower that did not exist in more than a handful of cars in the country at the time they were built.

The last Pase III GT was purchased by a doctor named Henry Rollings in 1971 who was a certified gearhead nut. He flew old war planes and was a noted road racer, and once he took a ride in a Phase III GT Corvette, he signed on to have one built. The day he picked up the car, he promptly drove it all the way to Georgia, 500 hp big block and A/C blowing the whole way! Gary and Pam Beineke’s 1971 Dodge Daytona in the A2 Wind Tunnel

Gary and Pam Beineke’s series of 1971 Chrysler wing cars are all based on early 1970s Chrysler documents that showed the company had tested scale models of aero ’71 cars in the wind tunnel. These reports were kept secret for decades, and once unearthed, served as inspiration for Gary and Pam to build several of the “never built” cars. Their latest is a 1971 Dodge Daytona built in the likeness of the Bobby Issac driven, K&K Insurance sponsored 1969 Daytona. Instead of just doing a show car tribute, the pair built a real land speed racer and have attacked Maxton, with plans for Bonneville this year as well as Loring, Maine. They went the extra mile and put the car in the A2 wind tunnel to get an idea of how the car would perform at speed. Continue reading at Bangshift.com

A 1971 Olds 442 W30 ‘Vert Gets Thrashed

With a total production class of about 30 cars, it’s rare to lay eyes on a real 1971 Olds 442 W30 convertible, so seeing one of these cars get thrashed on a road course, spun out, and thrown through the cones is a special treat. Thanks to a tipster we can share with you some cool old video showing a segment from Bud Lindemann’s “Car and Track” TV show. Watching the big Olds during panic stops is scary fun.

Whoever the test driver was for this show had the greatest job in the world. They really beat the hell out of this car in a multitude of ways. Our favorite parts are the moments when the car is tail out around the corners and frying tire all the way out of the frame. Torque is your friend.

A car feature on a 1971 Plymouth Super Bird? You got it. So what if Mopar never built such an animal, Gary and Pam Beineke did, and this one’s loaded with a 472ci Hemi wth a Six Pack. Yeah, Chrysler never made a Six Pack Hemi, either.

The vaunted “aero wars” in NASCAR came to a crashing halt in 1970 with the announcement by Bill France that all of the “special cars,” or those that had factory aerodynamic enhancements would be limited to a mere 305ci. Fielding a miniscule small-block in a field of big-inch stompers was not going to be productive, so the manufacturers killed their aerodynamic projects and went back to big cars with big frontal areas and big motors to punch through the air.

What gets lost in the mix is the simple fact that everyone, Ford, Chrysler, and GM, had skunkworks programs well in progress for the 1971 season and beyond. Although they were stopped after the announcement, testing had been done and documents created about the wind-tunnel prowess of the cars.
