Final Blogs From the 2010 Route 66 Rally

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

First of all I’d like to thank Scott Spielman for putting this rally together, and for getting CarDomain involved. It looked like everyone had a blast, and we certainly enjoyed the coverage! (You can read all the blogs from the rally here.) Secondly, I’d like to apoligize for not getting Melissa and Jeremiah’s final blogs up in the timely fashion. But you can read their posts after the jump! Thanks again guys, can’t wait to see what you do next year!

Team Camaro – Day Three, the Final Day!

By Robby DeGraff

RedMaro6

Today was one hell of a good final drive to the big state of Texas. After a fun night celebrating at the Cherokee Inn in Catoosa, Oklahoma, we all met in the parking lot again early in the morning for a quick prep-talk. The dedicated teams in the Ford Raptor, Subaru WRX, and new Camaro SS decided to depart a bit earlier, in hopes to follow their plan of driving the mother road and stopping at just about every Route 66 landmark. John and I took a few minutes to run to the local gas station, fuel up, pick up some breakfast snacks, and head back to the starting line.

We rocked it. Day two was short compared to the first day. We left close to 9 a.m. and pulled into the finish line shortly before 2 p.m. Once again, we made no additional stops which reflected our time. We were the fifth team to arrive at the motel tonight. The Rally is timed with staggered starts so arriving first does not necessarily mean you are first place in the Rally.

The first checkpoint was easy to find. Today, TJ was waiting at the first checkpoint to get some footage of us arriving and leaving. Sadly, we were not there long. A quick snapshot and we took off. Our alliances for the day were Team Cobalt and Team Camaro.

Team Wicked Day Two

Starting out at 10 am, with a quick roll thru town as we left Flagstaff. This was one of the nicest drive so far once we entered into New Mexico it looked like a scene from the movie cars with all the flat topped mountains and dessert area. Weather was gorgeous as we made it to our first check point at La Posada hotel in Winslow. This was a cool place but the police were in full effect in this town. Continuing up the road as we hit the The Jack Rabbit Trading Post for the “Special Stop.” This was fun and comical with all the different pics we got of people on the giant rabbit out front. After this we hit the Wigwam Village in Holbrook and this place was cool with all the old cars out front of these giant cement teepees. After getting back on the road and heading into New Mexico nothing but construction zones kept the speeds down to a blazing 55 mph for about 20 miles off and on.

TeamGOAT Flagstaff to Albuquerque

By Melissa Duchsherer

TeamGOAT

Day 2 of the Route 66 2010 Rally started off a little late! We didn’t leave the hotel until close to 10:30 this morning! During the night, the pranks started! We’ll admit, TeamGOAT Post-it’d TeamEvoX, with some assistance. We then moved on to TeamSlowBra with streamers! By the time we woke up this morning, two other cars had been T-P’d, including our GTO. It’s all fun and games and I’m extremely happy to know that everyone has the same respect for each other’s cars.

Our first checkpoint was the La Posada Hotel in Winslow, Arizona. The hotel was gorgeous, considering the town we drove through to get to it! It was great to actually cruise with more than our original convoy was only 3 other teams beside ourselves. Today we had the entire group minus 3. The walkie talkie’s were quite busy.

Team Camaro Day Two

Starting Line: Rolla, Missouri
Finish Line: Catoosa, Oklahoma

Thunderstorms rolled into Rolla, Missouri last night after we finished eating some of the biggest onion rings we have ever seen, and were all sitting around in the lounge chatting about all sorts of muscle cars and car related things. Team Camaro set an early morning alarm and called it a night around 1 a.m. It was dark, windy, and a bit rainy when we woke up six hours later for the second day of the 2010 Route 66 Rally. I strolled outside our door, (luckily our room was located right in front of the Camaro) and saw the rest of the east coast crew starting to wake up and prepare their cars for the upcoming day. From quick parking lot tune-ups and details, we were all getting ready to depart in less than an hour for our three checkpoints. John and I made a quick run to the gas station, filled up and bought some delicious morning breakfast goodies. We ran into Dan with the red BMW 3 series and Curt in his white BMW Z4. I took a moment to help my buddy Jay remove the tarp that was covering up his dune buggy. A few minutes later we were all lined up chatting away on the CB radios and walkie-talkies with everyone. I made a quick walk around the parking lot, observing teams figure out their route plans and directions. The two guys in the red BMW 3 series had their laptop up and running, the duo in the white Mitsubishi EVO was busy away programming their GPS, and the step-father son team from Maine in their Mini Cooper resorted to the old school method of paper maps. My co driver and navigator John was also working in the passenger seat of the Camaro scribbling brief directions on our map as he compared routes on the GPS and iPhone. Roaring could be heard as the new Camaro, Ford Raptor, and a few other cars pulled out and started off on the second leg of the rally. With an ok to go, a time recording, and a “Watch out for Tornados!” from Scott Spielman and Tony Intreri, we were off, flying down the road in front of Zeno’s Inn towards the highway.

Team Wicked – Day One

By Rob Combs

TeamWickedStang

First stage of the trip and it looks like a million bugs committed a mass suicide on my front bumper, but no to worries I am sure there will be a million more before we hit Amarillo, Texas. This trip has be so fun, from the dead end towns to the “caution Moose crossing signs” every 50 miles, and there was not a police officer in sight. Our new friends are the motorcycles across America group, taking a trip from L.A. to Washington DC. They seem to be a cool bunch.

We arrived in Needles, California for our second check point to find that half of the gas stations were roped off, not allowing gas to be pumped. We headed to the only station to get gas at almost $4.00 a gallon. I wish had more sponsors for this trip. The gas was crap as our 02 mustang pinged thru the mountains until about half a tank and arriving at our third and final check point.

TeamGOAT – Fontana to Flagstaff

By Melissa Duchsherer

TeamGOAT

We got to Fontana close to 8:00 am. There were probably about four teams already there! We waited until 9:00 for the last teams to arrive, with a total of 14 teams! TeamGOAT has an inflatable goat which we had everyone sign. I also made some breast cancer ribbons which I handed out to each member of the teams that were there. I will hand out the rest once we hit Amarillo! We all picked our started numbers that are on some pretty bad ass key chains. We then lined up and got ready to go! TeamGOAT headed out of Fontana at 9:28 this morning!
