Ice Racing a 1964 Galaxie 500

We got tipped off to this awesome video by Bangshift forum member and blog contributor Speedzzter. It is footage of a 1964 Galaxie 500 being wrung out on a frozen lake in Sweden. The car is a four speed and there are some shots of the driver doing some fancy footwork to guide the car around the frozen course.
There is an old Chevy in the video which puts up a futile chase, but the big Ford owns it by a lot. We’re going to attend some ice races this year, sadly our Javelin won’t be coming with us unless the Brinks truck breaks down in front of our house with the doors unlocked.
The big old Ford is painted up like an old stock car and it sounds healthy when the driver gets into the loud pedal and starts hurling shards of ice all over the place. This is one talented Swedish wheelman!

Best of SEMA: Sport Compact

While I might be using the term sport compact a little loosely here, I thought all these cars were wicked, so I was able justify shoehorning them into this category. Sue me. Anyway, I’m a sucker for an old-school VW, so I loved Paul Newman’s 351-powered Beetle, and I was really impressed with Rhys Millen Racing’s mid-engine Genesis Coupe, the Fiesta—stock, but awesome—in the Ford booth, the ferocious Fiat 500 and the Scion xB that won the Tuner Challenge. Fiat 500 Edges Out the Ford Ka on CarDomain

This week’s Showroom Showdown ended up being pretty close, but the Fiat 500 managed to edge out the Ford Ka by a few votes. There was also a fair amount of hate for these micro rides, which I don’t really get. I like small cars–they leave more room for my big old Mopar. And I’d really love to have an Abarth version of the 500, like the one below.

Ok, so we’re not getting either of these cool little econoboxes in the States. But we can dream, can’t we? These rides share the same platform, but the Fiat 500 is decidedly retro, whereas the new Ford Ka is thoroughly modern. So for this week’s Showroom Showdown it’s Fix It Again Tony vs. Found On Road Dead. Which would you choose?
