The Classic Years in Mustang Advertising

In 1963, planning for the Mustang begin in earnest. To be built on the Ford Falcon’s unibody platform, the Mustang was discussed at length before a single sketch was ever drawn. The all-consuming goal was to make a car that looked like no other. With a sweeping hood, sculptured flanks and short rear deck. With those design cues, the Mustang would be set apart from all competition.
According to some, the Mustang was established as a response to GM’s Corvair Monza and the defining ideas for it were committed to paper beginning in late 1961. Reportedly, it was Lee Iacocca – not Henry Ford II – who determined that the car would be a four-seater, because of the economic failure of the two-seat Thunderbird in 1955.
However, the commercial success of the Ford Falcon contributed significantly to the Mustang plan, as it became evident that smaller cars had become more acceptable to the American public. Through forty-six years of tough competition from Chrysler and General Motors, the Mustang remained in continuous production while the others came and went and came again…

Making Of Acura's RDX "Wall Art" Ad

A lot of you have probably seen Acura’s latest TV spot and figured it was just plain old CGI. Turns out, though, that the ad was done entirely with stop-action animation using the talents of UK street artists David Whittle and Henry “Sainty” St. Leger. They used one giant 40′ x 60′ board with the Acura positioned in front of it, then created a moving tapestry of urban scenery, one frame at a time, by repainting the canvas (and in some cases, the car) for each successive shot to create the illusion of forward movement. Nothing was computer generated or superimposed–see that aerial view where the birds fly over? Those birds were painted directly onto the floor and the vehicle’s roof to produce that sequence. The whole thing took ten days, 455 gallons of paint, and 503 rattle-cans, and they had to keep an automotive detailer on location–and you thought your last spray-bomb paint job was messy. What's Your Favorite Car Ad?

It’s interesting to see the different approaches that car manufacturers use in TV advertising. For me most are generally forgettable. However I do have a few favorites that I consider to be above average. One that I like because it’s politically incorrect in a funny way and because it is selling my favorite type of car is the Elliot Dodge Charger 500 add from 1970. More recently I have really had a good laugh with the Trunk Monkey ads. So what’s you favorite car ad?

Chevy Billboard Swarmed By London Penny-Pinchers

On London’s New Oxford Street, Chevy put up the world’s first billboard made of pennies as part of its campaign for the Aveo. But in the space of half an hour, passers-by had picked it completely clean of pence. The incident gave ad execs ample opportunity for mugging about the Aveo’s ability to put money back in the consumer’s pocket, blah-blah-blah. But you kind of have to wonder if anyone who’d go through this kind of trouble for the most despised coin of all is really in the market for a new car. More pics below the jump.

Everything's Bigger In… Moscow?

Here’s a strategy ripped straight from the "go big or go home" playbook. To advertise its new M-Series in Moscow, BMW has constructed a humongous 65,000 square foot billboard, and mounted actual vehicles to its face. Even in pictures, the effect of the enormous ad is stunning, so in person, it must be something else. More pics after the jump. via CarScoop
