Robby Gordon at SEMA 2009!

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

There really aren’t many things NASCAR driver Robby Gordon hasn’t raced. At SEMA, Chad from BangShift caught up with him in the Magnaflow booth to talk about cubic inches, high horsepower, his daily drivers and his burly Hummer. Hey guys, how about taking it easy on Nads?

By Brian Lohnes

BANGshift.com

OK, Mopar guys, here’s a new photo gallery loaded with a bunch of big B-bodies that we’ve seen over the past year or so at places like the Spring Fling (next one is coming soon!), the Long Beach Swap Meet, Pomona Swap Meet, the Car Junkie Drag Bash, the John Force car show, and more.

Check it out here.

2009 Cobra Jet Mustang on eBay

By Brian Lohnes

BANGshift.com

Well that didn’t take long. 2009 Cobra Jet Mustang number 26 is up for sale on eBay for a starting bid of $100,000. The car is being sold by an Ohio exotic car dealer and we’re keenly interested to see where this auction ends up. Hopefully it goes to someone who will actually race it instead of putting it in a hermetically sealed bubble somewhere.

These cars are runners, as John Calvert proved when he won Stock Eliminator at the 2009 NHRA Winternationals. To our knowledge this is the first one of the cars to hit the public auction block, unless you count the prototype sold at Barrett-Jackson.

Hardcore Ford fanatics have to be monitoring this auction with bated breath. We have few doubts that the car will be sold. The only question is how much?

Amazing Rides At Goodguys Pleasanton!

By Brian Lohnes

BANGshift.com

We’ve attended Goodguys shows all across the country, but our favorites are at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton, California. We were there this weekend for the 27th All-American Get Together, which is open to any year American or American-powered rod, custom, muscle car, or truck. We have six photo galleries loaded with 351 photos from the Saturday show. The place was as packed as we’ve ever seen it, with over 3,000 cars on site.

Check out the show at BANGshift.

Gearhead Destination: The Blue Ridge Parkway

By Brian Lohnes

BANGshift.com

A while back we told you to go check out the Tail of the Dragon, an amazing stretch of road that will test your nerve and your ability to toss your junk through the corners. Today we’re sending you to another stretch of road. This one is called the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is among the most beautiful and enjoyable sections of macadam in the United States.

The road was started as a Depression-era WPA project in 1936 and was technically finished in 1987. It runs for nearly 500 miles from Virginia to North Carolina and along the way you’ll see amazing views, historical sites, and best of all, lots of curvy roads with elevation changes and the type of sinewy goodness that you dream happy dreams about.
e
There are 26 tunnels along the way that were hewn straight through the rock that stood before the road builders. There are also nearly 200 bridges. The highest point will put you more than 6,000 feet above sea level. The speed limit is on 45 mph but we’ve heard that the route isn’t teaming with smokeys so leaning into the loud pedal for a few curves may not cost you an arm and a leg.

Hit the official website to get the info. This would be a perfect way to spend a vacation with your family and hot rod.

Monday Time Killer: Pontiac Heaven

By Brian Lohnes

BANGshift.com

Steve Barcak is a self-described Pontiac extremist and his website certainly lives up that claim. This is truly a slice of internet heaven for fans of GM’s “excitement” brand, even though it seems to be on the ropes these days.

Barcak does not just talk the talk, as the guy runs a nostalgia Fuel dragster with a blown Poncho motor in it, owns a couple sets of the near mythical Mickey Thompson Pontiac Hemi heads, and seems to own more cars than a certain magazine guy we know.

Hit this site and you’ll be looking at a myriad of photos, checking out projects, and seeing the inner workings of a dude thoroughly obsessed with Pontiacs. There’s nothing wrong with that in our book. It’s a perfect way to kill a Monday morning.

Check it out here.

Keeping Up With The Joneses: US Lawnmower Racing Association

By Brian Lohnes

BANGshift.com

Admit it, you’ve been mowing your grass, buzzing along in fourth gear on your lawn tractor and clipping apexes around your house. If you’re like us, you don’t have a drink holder on your lawn tractor, but you do have a straight pipe and the governor has been disabled.

Turn your racing fantasies into reality in the world of the USLMRA! We’ve seen these lunatics on ESPN and it looks like insane amounts of fun. The race schedule seems to favor the Midwestern section of the country, but we bet there are local series all over the country.

Make no mistake about it, these guys are racers. The lawn tractors are heavily modified to greatly increase their ability to corner and achieve death defying speeds.

Hit the website
and start plotting on how to chop and cut your current mower into a racing machine!

Cash For Clunkers Is Coming Again In California

By Brian Lohnes

BANGshift.com

Talk about the thing that wouldn’t die. The recurring nightmare known unofficially as the “Cash for Clunkers” program to get old cars off the road is going to be reintroduced by CARB again soon.

Yes, this time it is California specific, but again, once these programs get a toehold it’s time look out, because we’re headed down the slippery slope. This is an “enhanced” plan that is even more evil than the last one as cars are no longer required to fail a smog or emissions check to be eligible. That means that anyone who wants some quick cash for their old car could turn it in no questions asked. At least before, the car had to be running like crap for you to be able to ditch it.

California is in probably the worst financial shape of any state in the country. It’s a recognized freaking disaster, yet they are still clamoring to spend the money of the tax paying citizens to buy other people’s old cars.

What a country.  Start writing SEMA and hit the link here to read more about this junk.

Goodguys Costa Mesa Meet

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor-at-Large

Ah, the Goodguys shows. Sure, it’s kind of an older crowd on average, but the mood is always laid back and frankly there’s no better place than these shows to get an eyeful of really nicely-done 50s and 60s domestics. I’m loving this first-gen Corvette Nomad conversion, based on a factory concept that was never produced. Brian over at BangShift has posted a ton of galleries from this show–check them out for more amazing rides!

Dump-Truck Wheelie Fail

By Brian Lohnes

BANGshift.com

Let’s say you’re a dump truck driver. Let’s say you’re in a hurry. Let’s say you forget that the dump body is up and you’re on the highway. Let’s say you probably don’t have a job anymore.

This photographic gem came to us from a local buddy. As you can tell by the signs, it happened in Connecticut. Pretty amazing that the sign and post held up as well as they did.

Imagine being the guy in the truck and having to radio this one into dispatch. We personally like the photo of the ladder truck with the ladder extended to fish out the driver. See the rest of the pics at BangShift.
