Wow! Now that’s Cheap Insurance!
By Alex Vickers
Katakuna
I’ve gone back and forth about actually fixing this car: should I shell out $400 to get it running, or should I let it sit in my driveway like redneck yard art? Should I save it from eternal damnation, or should I leave it to rot in automotive hell? Should I breathe life into it once more, or should I pull the plug (so to speak)?
Here’s what’s almost made up my mind: I just got an insurance quote from Hagerty Collector Car Insurance. An entire year’s policy would only cost me $315.82 a year. Think about that: It’s only thirty dollars a month! I’m only eighteen years old, and I got an insurance quote for a man thrice my age. Hit the jump to read more…

Today’s pic is from Putranto’s Volkswagen Beetle ride page. I almost thought it was a toy car at first! Keep those photo of the day PMs and e-mails coming!

VW Deconstruction
By Ron Honig
WaytooFurious
Recently my friend Dale picked up a ragtop VW Beetle minus the engine and gearbox for free. The body was completely riddled with rust so the mechanic that owned the car had decided to get rid of it. The beauty of this deal was that everything from the wide body kit down to the carpets was in good order. Unfortunately Dale’s wife told him that under no circumstances was he bringing home another car!
I thought that this was a bit harsh, I mean how can it be a bad thing if a man wants to add to his collection of two Beetles and a Combi? To solve the dilemma I suggested that we store and strip the car close to where I lived as it would be under cover and we would have a garage to store the parts in. To cut a long story short I thought that I would start working on the car by myself to save time.
It was great, I have not worked on a Beetle in years and found it almost therapeutic when I systematically stripped it apart. It took me half a day and this was the end result. Last weekend we cut the shell in half and dragged it off to the scrap yard. So when was the last time you had fun stripping a car?

Rainy Day Rodding at Mooneyes
Antonio Alvendia
With December in full swing and Christmas-time near, tis the season for parties and holiday cheer. With hot rods on the freeway, plus an onslaught of rain, I had to yell at times, “stupid ass, stay in your lane!!!”
This past weekend, I attended the Annual Mooneyes Christmas Party at Irwindale Speedway. I can’t believe it’s already been a full year since the last time I visited the show. I have to admit… cold, rainy weather makes me feel pretty lazy. Living in Southern Cali, I think I’ve gotten used to the weather being 73 degrees all year round, so when it dips below 55 degrees outside, it’s pretty hard for me to convince myself to leave the comfort of my baffled goose down comforter behind and trudge through the rain with 30+lbs of camera gear and flyers on my back. This Saturday, it was especially difficult because I was out with my friends at a house party and didn’t get back until 4:30am on the day of the show.
However, I’m really glad I did make it to Mooneyes this year. Speaking to my friend Shige (the man behind Mooneyes and Crown Classics in Yokohama Japan), we both agreed that the rain did put a bit of a damper on the event’s attendance, but it was good in a way. It weeded out most of the “trying to be down” scenesters and showed everyone who the real hardcore hot rodders were. Most of the guys who came to this year’s Mooneyes Christmas Party actually drove their period correct traditional hot rods with vintage whitewall tires on the 605 freeway IN THE RAIN to and from the show. Now that’s dedication! Much respect! Continue reading and view more photos on MotorMavens!

German Folks Wagens at Mooneyes
Antonio Alvendia
When I think of Mooneyes and their Annual Christmas Party at Irwindale, I normally think of hot rods – rat rods, traditionals, kustoms, roadsters… things of that sort. However, as I was trudging along the Irwindale Speedway parking lot with soaking wet jeans (and even worse… wet socks. Grossss!) from the torrential downpour that Mother Nature subjected us to… I noticed this small grouping of Volkswagens, and immediately began making my way toward them.
These Vee Dubs had their own sense of style. The color and rust spots on this blue Deluxe VW bus reminded me of the Volkswagen Single Cab from Miami that we featured just a few months ago when we started this site. I’m admittedly not a maven of VW knowledge, but I do have a strong opinion on what I think is stylish and what’s not. Continue reading and view more photos on MotorMavens!

Best of SEMA: Sport Compact
By John Coyle
Deputy Editor
While I might be using the term sport compact a little loosely here, I thought all these cars were wicked, so I was able justify shoehorning them into this category. Sue me. Anyway, I’m a sucker for an old-school VW, so I loved Paul Newman’s 351-powered Beetle, and I was really impressed with Rhys Millen Racing’s mid-engine Genesis Coupe, the Fiesta—stock, but awesome—in the Ford booth, the ferocious Fiat 500 and the Scion xB that won the Tuner Challenge. How Many Cars Have You Gone Through?
By Alex Vickers
Katakuna
I’m only seventeen, yet I’ve gone through my fair share of cars over the last few years. My first car was a 1994 Ford Thunderbird LX with a 4.6L V8, sunroof, faded black paint, perfect interior, and enough grunt to make small Hondas think twice. At 200,000+ miles, it ran like a champ, but personal reasons caused me to sell it back to the previous owner.

Five Guilty-Pleasure Cars That Are More Fun To Drive Than You'd Expect
By Sam Barer
Sound Classics
I ran a story on my Four Wheel Drift site recently titled “Five Classics That Aren’t Nearly As Fun To Drive As People Think They Are” that proved to be pretty controversial. Call a baby ugly and evidently you’re bound to be read the Riot Act from a number of angry parents.
To even out my Karma (or Car-ma, as the case might be), I’ll let CarDomain readers know that there are also five guilty-pleasure cars that are much more fun to drive than people think. We’ll see if you all agree with my picks.

Basketcase Rescue 2-for-1: 200 Bucks Takes Both
1lowscort
My friend, Jason, happens to be an air-cooled VW nut. So he was the first person who came to mind when I received a text message last Friday from a friend saying that his co-worker had a VW Baja Bug and a split-window van that he was trying to get rid of. He said the guy wanted $200 for the pair, so I got his phone number and then called him immediately to tell him I’d take the VWs. Right after that, I called my friend Jason and let him know that he’d just bought a splitty van and a baja bug for $200. He didn’t seem very interested in the bug, as he likes his Beetles to be original. I had gathered over the phone with the seller that the VW sale was kind a package deal–so, being the good friend I am, I split the cost of the pair and took the Beetle off his hands. We went for the 65-mile drive North to Ronan, Montana, to look at the cars on Saturday. The van was pretty rough and the bug was ok–at best. More…
