Five People Dead at Daytona Bike Week

Bike Week in Daytona kicked off on Friday, and five people have already been killed. Two died when the bike they were riding was hit by a truck, another guy missed a turn and died on impact, and a elderly woman was killed when she stepped in front of a pair of riders. While the other unlucky bikers were from out of state, Amedeo Revellini was actually from Daytona, but he still managed to enter a highway against traffic and collide with two other motorcycles. Yikes. Tampa Bay Online doesn’t mention how many of the dead were wearing helmets, but they aren’t required in Florida, and from my experience not many people in the Sunshine State wear them. Given that eight people died over the course of the ten day event last year, it seems like Bike Week is off to a pretty grim start. Hopefully the rest of the event proceeds without any more fatalities.
