Mike from Clunkbucket checked out Bug-In 35 at California Speedway in Fontana this weekend, an awesome meetup of performance VW’s. Click through for a ton of pics of squirrely Beetles actually burning up the drag strip.

VW Deconstruction

By Ron Honig

WaytooFurious

Recently my friend Dale picked up a ragtop VW Beetle minus the engine and gearbox for free. The body was completely riddled with rust so the mechanic that owned the car had decided to get rid of it. The beauty of this deal was that everything from the wide body kit down to the carpets was in good order. Unfortunately Dale’s wife told him that under no circumstances was he bringing home another car!

I thought that this was a bit harsh, I mean how can it be a bad thing if a man wants to add to his collection of two Beetles and a Combi? To solve the dilemma I suggested that we store and strip the car close to where I lived as it would be under cover and we would have a garage to store the parts in. To cut a long story short I thought that I would start working on the car by myself to save time.

It was great, I have not worked on a Beetle in years and found it almost therapeutic when I systematically stripped it apart. It took me half a day and this was the end result. Last weekend we cut the shell in half and dragged it off to the scrap yard. So when was the last time you had fun stripping a car?

VW Bug x EJ20 x BBS LMs = WIN

By Ben Schaffer

The Real JDM

In our quest to feature things that inspire us to think outside of the box, I must thank fellow car nut Alex Butti for the lead on this story! Inspiration of the day is a 1972 VW Bug with a Impreza STi motor swap, Porsche OEM Brembo brakes and BBS LM wheels.

1963 Bug: My New Car

By Alex Vickers

Katakuna

My ’87 F-150 went tits up and floated down the river. I found out today that the body is so far gone that it honestly isn’t worth dealing with. Come on, I found a rust hole in the floorboard big enough to stick my hand through it.  So, in order to replace it, I looked for something, anything to drive. I was so desperate I was about to fork over $600 for a slightly better 1988 Olds Delta 88 Royale with a power control module issue (it keeps melting after a month or so), when my father told me that the car that’s been sitting in his driveway for about three years is going to be mine when he finally passes on, which equates to “son, that old car is yours now.”

This car once belonged to my Uncle Charlie until he died in 1981, then was hauled back to Frankfort, Kentucky all the way from Los Angeles. It was originally chocolate brown, but my uncle painted it light blue. Mind you, the man went to great detail, even doing the interior. All that he missed was the passenger-side door jam. It belonged to my grandfather until his death in 1994, in which he left it to my father with the exception that one of his grandchildren is to have it someday. Well fellow CarDomain members, that day has finally come.

13B-Swapped Sleeper Bug

By Speedhunters

Car Culture At Large

Earlier this month when I was at the Bug-In event at Autoclub Speedway, I found myself spending a lot of time wandering through the staging lanes looking over all the cars that came out to for the drags. As you saw during my Bug-In event coverage, there was a wide variety of VW’s there, ranging from lightly modified daily drivers to VW-powered rail dragsters.

With that said, there was one car I saw that really threw me off. From a distance, this oval-window Bug looked just like any other rust-covered project car, but as I got closer I saw that the engine was bit different than your average Volkswagen flat-four. Finally, I got close enough to find out that this mystery engine was in fact a naturally aspirated Mazda 13B rotary engine. Continue reading at Speedhunters

The Heb Rod

By Speedhunters

Car Culture At Large

When I was at the Fontana Bug-In earlier this month, I was walking around the car show when I spotted this gleaming roadster spread amongst the classic VW’s on display. The car looked familiar, but I couldn’t quite remember where I’d seen it before. After bit of thinking, I recalled that Rod posted a photo of this car during his May editorial. I spent some time checking out the car at Bug-In, but it wasn’t until I got home and did a bit of research that I found out just how notable this car is. Unlike most of the “big name” builds out there, the car had a very low profile presence at the Bug-In. There were no signs detailing the build , and I didn’t even see the owner during the several times I passed by it. Dubbed the “Heb Rod”, this 1957 Beetle is one of the only VW’s to be properly recognized as the real deal by the traditional hot rodding community. Continue reading at Speedhunters

Three-Door 1965 VW Bug on eBay

By Brian Lohnes

BangShift.com

This is one of those cars that catches your eye for a second, and just when you are about to move onto the next thing, you can’t. The seller claims that this is the only three-door Bug in the world, and we’ve got no reason to doubt him.

The most impressive part of this car is just how factory the custom work comes off. Nothing about this tips the casual observer off that the car is anything but a “typical” three-door Beetle, of which none were made.

The stance is pretty hot as well with its chin right down in the weeds. We would shamelessly drive the wheels off of this thing.

No idea what the reserve on this eBay auction is, but the bidding is still at a supremely reasonable level. Make it happen people. We want to try out that trick back door.

VW Bug Motorhome

By David Freiburger

David Freiburger

The reality of a VW Bug motorhome itself is plain bliss, but when you add the homegrown art of the side, this is thing is pure genius.

I spotted this Beetle camper during my honeymoon road trip in 2005 off Route 66 in Holbrook, Arizona. Surprisingly, this is not homemade. These were made by a company called Bugaroo, though something tells us they were not hot sellers. There was also a time when Mechanix Illustrated magazine showed you how to build one yourself. All the details are still available at a web page here.
