Fireball's "Cool Designs of the Week!"

By Fireball Tim

Movie Car Design Master

Man, it’s been a crazy few days. Lots of cool cars have shown up (All in my driveway…. slight exaggeration, as in the driveway of the mind!) But, there are SO many doodads of coolness out there, it’s really hard to pick what gets the major super duper cool status of being one of of my CDW’s. (See, another acronym… I keep doing that for some reason.)

So, without further do doo… Feast in the pure bitchiness of the soul. Cars of heaven, direct to your door, yo.

1. THE AUDI LOCUS CONCEPT

Gorgeous, right. I mean, here’s a woman that knows your weakness. Although, most likely a 3D image, this Audi concept evokes style and charm with added sass. Like a woman who knows just how to get into that sweet spot of yours. ‘Course, dangling it first to get your attention until you melt like warm chocolate. Oooooo……

Fireball's Cool Designs of the Week!

By Fireball Tim

Movie Car Design Master

What is going on in this world? Ideas are merging, blending, taking shape, radically departing but staying the same. And that’s our world. Change.

Many people fear change. Maybe because it’s unknown. The question is, “What if you DID know the answer?” To everything? Would life be the same? Would you even be interested? Change is good. It keeps us on our toes, makes life adventurous, and forces us to have faith in things unseen.

Fortunately for you, you get to SEE this week’s designs. Some are wicked cool, some way not. But change is in the air, therefore, this week’s theme. Entitled?

CHANGE!…… DANGIT!

1. THE AUDI E- TRON ELECTRIC

Audi_E_tron_R8

Remember the Audi in “IRobot?” How could you not? It was in every DANG scene of the movie. Along with Will Smith’s beefy bod. (I had enough of that after the first scene… whatever) Well, Audi has taken their R8 and made it sweeter. Electric. And… Red. And red is good. Electric? Yea, that’s cool, but RED is cooler. Just think of RED things. Cherries. Megan Fox’s Lips. A stubbed toe. Ok,… maybe not the last one. But red is cool, dangit. (Check out the AutoDissection on the R8 here.)

Fireball's "Cool Designs of the Week"

By Fireball Tim

Movie Car Design Master

As with most weeks, I got cool stuff sent to me. “Hey Fireball! Whatta ya think of my (fill in the blank).” And with that kinda traffic coming at me, I get the privilidge of seeing the best of what’s out there. Sort of.

Well, not all of it is lip smackin’ goodness. Some of it is downright cheese of the Limberger nature. But, without more dumb explanation, here’s what’s cool in design this past week. And no, you can’t buy the Phat Boy Can from me. It’s on “special order” from Iceland.

Bugatti

THE BUGATTI BORDEAUX

Big and beautiful, but they’re only building them for the richest MoFo’s on the planet. So, if we get to “see” one, it’ll cost about 10K.

Are Cars As Essential to the 4th of July as Fireworks and Hot Dogs?

By Sam Barer

Sound Classics

Most people say that a Fourth of July celebration isn’t complete without fireworks. Me, I say that it’s not complete without classic cars on parade. And again I spent the morning of the 4th at the Yarrow Point Parade outside of Bellevue, Washington.

First watch all the great classics (Corvettes, Rolls-Royces, Jeeps, Jaguars, a ’29 Franklin, Bugatti T57, and a Kaiser-Darrin, to name a few) parading down Yarrow Point, then sound off and let me know if your July 4th celebration included any classic cars!

Bugatti Veyron Plows Field

By John Coyle

Editor

There isn’t a lot of information about this UK Bugatti crash, all that’s really known is that the owner lost control in a sweeping turn and then proceeded to ruin some farmer’s day. From the looks of the pics, it doesn’t appear that the car is too badly damaged, and it also looks like it would perform pretty miserably  a piece of farm equipment. Three more photos of the carnage after the jump. GTSpirit via Jalopnik

This Just In: New on the Net

Working at CarDomain is—by a country mile—the coolest job that I’ve ever had. But sometimes, I feel like playing hokey, and today was one of those days. Being inside when it’s this gorgeous out just isn’t right. Maybe I should start smoking again, at least then I’d have an excuse to stand in the sun. Anyway, here’s the news.

  • Well, it won’t be as fast as it’s closed-cockpit predecessor, but the Veyron Targa will still be the fastest open-roof production car ever. Just how loud do think it will be inside the cabin at 217MPH?  I know I’d like to find out. World Car Fans
  • In case you haven’t been paying attention to gas prices lately—and are just dying to own a make that might be shortly shuttered—Hummer has announced prices for the 2009 H3T sport-utility truck. Winding Road
  • Here’s a big surprise: there’s no way in hell we’re going to be able to get Tata Nanos here in the States. Maybe it’s time for some "urban car" safety standards? AutoObserver
  • Acura has released the first official image of the new TL, and it while it’s not drop-dead gorgeous, it looks pretty good. The best news? It’ll come with the most powerful engine Acura has ever made. CarScoop

High Class Street Racing!

By John Coyle

Editor

Street racing isn’t any less idiotic when the cars involved are high-dollar exotics, but it does make it a lot cooler to write about. Case in point? This battle between a Bugatti Veyron and a Ferrari 599, which occurred in traffic on a busy highway in the UK. Apparently, the cars battled for over ten minutes and hit more than 130MPH. The driver of the Veyron got tagged by the cops, but the Ferrari driver managed to get away. Guess not having a license plate comes in handy. Get the full story over on the Sun

This Just In: New on the Net

By John Coyle

I was out of the office for the last few days, because I was in Florida for my little sister’s wedding. It was great, and I even managed to avoid embarrassing my parents by getting plastered at the reception. Hey, first time for everything. Here’s the news:

  • The first Bugatti Veyron has been sold in China, for a whopping 3.5 million bucks. How’s that for Western decadence?  Autoblog
  • The Bush administration doesn’t want the Big Three dragging their feet with the new CAFE standards, which is basically another way of saying, "hey look at us, we’re still relevant!" Automotive News
  • Asimo, Honda’s cute little robot, will be conducting the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in early May. The opening piece will be "The Impossible Dream," and will be followed by the composition "Submit Human Scum, Robot Liberation has Begun." Detroit News
  • People really like the new Malibu. The average price consumers are paying is $200 higher than what folks are shelling out for the Camry. Good news for the General. Freep
  • Employees in Ford’s Design Center will not be allowed to bring their kids into the office for Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work day. Maybe the company is still smarting from the leak of this 2010 Taurus shot? New York Times

Veyron: Finest Automobile in All History?

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

That seems to be the stance of Men’s Vogue editor Michael Mraz, who got a chance to visit the Bugatti assembly plant in Dorlisheim, France.

Designed by the German architect Günther Henn, the building has a floor-to-ceiling glass faade, giving workers a nice view of the Vosges Mountains. With its natural light, gray floor, and hushed and unhurried ambience, the atelier seems more like a materials-testing lab at Stanford than a car company. Missing are the sounds and smells of ordinary car-building, the shrill muezzin of air guns, the hammer clanging, the bitter white sparks of welding. When Kruta and I walk through, there are about 12 cars on the floor or suspended on racks, in various states of assembly. And that’s what it is: assembly. Nearly every part of the Veyron — including the monstrous aluminum-and-magnesium quad-turbo engine — is manufactured somewhere else, mostly in Germany. The body panels are formed and pre-painted, the seats and wheels pre-skinned, the electronics pre-wired. Still, these are probably the most complicated cars ever made, and that’s reflected in the work rate — two cars per week.

He also got a chance to drive one of these supercars, though the video is kind of crummy. But I did like the photo below–too bad there aren’t more online. I guess they want you to go buy the magazine.
