Creativity
By Ben Schaffer
The Real JDM
The Japanese LOVE their scooters. I’m not sure what to call this exactly, but the creativity reminds me of the JDM scooter scene. I saw this at Tokyo Auto Salon and I was impressed. Would I ever drive something like this? No. Never.

Modulo S2000 Concept Car: A Detail Nobody Noticed
By Ben Schaffer
The Real JDM
Honda Modulo released a concept S2000 at Tokyo Auto Salon. Personally, I thought the car was really ugly. The chunky design reminded me of a Lamborghini Reventon, except a totally uncool and ugly one. The rear of this S2000 is especially awful and I’m glad to not be showing it to you.
However there was something totally amazing about this S2000 that almost nobody caught. Look at the gauges. Being an S2000 enthusiast and owner, this blew me away. They replaced the entire cluster with a full LED screen that has two modes, the classic tach-centric view that S2000 owners already know and love, plus this split view which is a more conventional readout, with the ability to toggle between the two totally different views. That cluster totally makes the car special to me, its a product that I’d love to get for my S2000! Unfortunately Honda Modulo never releases any products…oh well.

Rim Vinyl
By Ben Schaffer
The Real JDM
I’m always interested in what the new trends are. I just like seeing something new… anything new will entertain me for at least a minute.
This year’s Tokyo Auto Salon brought a few new trends. One trend that I see potentially taking off is the concept of printed vinyl stickers for rim lips. The idea is not really anything new, printed graphics on vinyl stickers have been around for years. But the specific marketing and use of it on wheels is relatively new, especially when it comes to JDM tuned cars and Tokyo Auto Salon display cars.
I know where it’s headed ultimately, and its ugly. Within six months I expect to hate rim vinyl as much as I hate seeing Lambo doors on Ford pickup trucks. Most trendy things get abused and ruined very fast. But…just like I thought the first set of lambo doors was cool when I first saw them on something other than a Lamborghini, I’m going to put my neck out on the line and say that I think vinyl on rims can be cool if done right. My friend Charlie was kind enough to offer me another concept photoshop creation of his. Once again I find myself fascinated by his work and his original designs. I hope you enjoy it as well. Charlie calls it the Amuse Millennium widebody concept.

Vertex E92 M3 D1GP Drift Car
By Ben Schaffer
The Real JDM
For the past six months so many of my friends in the industry over in Japan have been talking about the build up of this car. If there was one car being produced in 2008 that generated the most hype in Japan, this car is it.
Oddly that hype has been seemingly limited in North America…so much in fact that after reading countless blogs and posts about the car’s debut at TAS, nobody seems to mention one of the most important facts regarding the car…the engine.
This E92 M3 widebody drift car uses a 2JZGTE Supra twin turbo engine. There, finally its been said. Continue reading…

Garage Saurus’s Inspiration For Their Ferrari
By Ben Schaffer
The Real JDM
The Ferrari 550 Maranello campaigned in various race series in the late 1990s, including one of our favorites: the Japanese Super GT race series (then JGTC). The 550 platform saw multiple aerodynamic configurations for various race series (the Prodrive car is especially cool although I cant at the moment find the picture I personally took of it which I really wish I could find right now).
Although Ferrari offered dry carbon body work which included a vented hood and full widebody to race teams, the Evoluzione version of the 550 Maranello was never readily available to the public.
I thought I’d share some various pictures of other modified and race spec Ferrari 550s for any of you that enjoyed the Saurus car as much as I do. More pics after the jump!

Tom's S2000
By Ben Schaffer
The Real JDM
I consulted with Tom and supplied him the parts to build his dream S2000 about two years ago. This project from the beginning I knew would be special because Tom is someone who like myself is a real lover of high end JDM quality. No shortcuts were made, this car was prepared with simply the best of everything from the frame up. Continue reading…

As Expected, the Z34 370Z is Growing On Me
By Ben Schaffer
The Real JDM
At first glance I must say I didnt like the new design of the Z34 much… although I knew with confidence that the day would come where I’d open up to it and learn to enjoy it. Recently I’m starting to get comfortable with the headlights, tail lights and front bumper shape. MCR has done a lot to help me see the beauty of the car with these pictures of their 370Z demo car. Stay tuned as we continue to introduce MCR to Z and GT-R enthusiasts outside of Japan.
