What the..?

By Tony Castellano

Tcassa

Every now and then you come across a vehicle that is, well, a bit unusual. Such was the case at a recent car show I attended. This creation was attracting more attention than some of the hot rods on display, and you can probably see why…

Suntory Times! Classic Car Show with a Japanese Twist

By John Naderi

StreetFire.net

What makes a classic car? Is it a pre-war Bugatti, a ’57 Chevy, ’32 Ford or perhaps anything slathered in British Racing Green and stuffed with a rat’s nest of Lucas electronics? But what about our automotive brethren across the Pac Rim, from the island nation most known for the Camry and Accord? There’s some deep history here such as Honda’s S600, Toyota’s 2000GT, Mazda’s Cosmo or this – Nissan’s OG “Hakosuka” Skyline spotted at the Japanese Classic Car Show held on Saturday, October 3 at Irvine, California’s Hidden Valley Park. This was the fifth anniversary of the show, which is open to any pre-1985 Japanese car. This particular PGC-10 is a 1971 model owned by Mickey Castillo. JDM urban legend says that of the handful of C-10 Skylines in the States only a few are authentic GT-R models. I really don’t care if Mickey’s car is an R because it’s chock full of sick Sonny Chiba style. Hit the jump to see more tasty morsels from JCCS.

Mustang Stampede

By Tony Castellano

Tcassa

Mustangs, we all love ‘em, especially the earlier years with their distinctive looks and outright road presence. So when my folks herdI mean heard there was a Mustang Concours event just north of home, they couldn’t pass up the event! Mustangs from all years were on show, and even though the location was a bit of a dust bowl, owners still turned up ready to showoff their polished ponies. The concours, held by the Queensland branch of the Mustang Owners Club, was in conjunction with the Castrol Edge Muscle Car Spectacular, so there were plenty of other American muscle fighting for the attention.

Oh and I bet you didn’t know the new Challenger came in right hand drive spec! Just kidding… it was specially converted to suit Aussie roads and rules.  What do you think about that, pretty cool huh? Loads of pics after the jump!

World of Top Gear

By Tony Castellano

Tcassa

The other week I paid a visit to the World of Top Gear, located in the grounds of the National Motor Museum. The ‘Enormodrome’ as it’s called allows you to get up-close and personal with some of the battered, modified and ruined cars from many of your favorite TG episodes! My favorite was probably seeing Jeremy’s Fiat Panda Limo… what an awesome creation! Plenty of pics after the jump!

Goodnight Nisei Week Showoff, There Will be no Encore

By John Naderi

StreetFire.net

Import Showoff is arguably the OG import car show, precluded only by the Nisei Cruise of the late Eighties and early Nineties in LA’s Little Tokyo District. And for Showoff architect Ken Miyoshi it only made sense to bring his car show to the Nisei Week Japanese Festival a few years ago as the Nisei Week Showoff thus reuniting real import car flava with the Nisei Festival.

Back in the day the car quality at Import Showoff was second to none. The fake wheel and knock-off body kit crowd needed not apply. The shows were all about the cars. But in ’98 Hot Import Nights seamlessly blended the club kids with the car clubs proving it’s not all about the cars. Yet for some of us it was always all about the cars. While Ken may have diluted his original recipe with a few grains of rice over the years the Nisei Showoff has basically maintained the quality of one of Mr. Miyoshi’s old school Mainstream Productions. And one recent trend Nisei showcases is the resurgent Honda movement. For example, the engine bays of these Civics feature nothing fast nor furious, just shaved and filled sheet metal, tucked wire harnesses and built motors. Hit the jump to see more random observations from what might have possibly been the final Nisei Showoff. Say it ain’t so, Ken!

CHVA Car Show Father's Day 2009 Yreka, California

By David Belau

dartslantsix

It’s just a little show in Northern California, but it is hands down my favorite. It’s held every year in Yreka, CA at the fairgrounds on Father’s Day. The Contemporary Historical Vehicle Association (CHVA)  puts it on. Showing your car is free as is spectating. They have a pancake breakfast to help pay for the rental of the fairgrounds.

What I love about the show is driving down early in the morning with everyone else. It’s quite a sight to see a row of 10 classic cars cruising down the freeway. The fairgrounds are nice too, with shade and parking on the grass. Pretty much every kind of car shows up- muscle cars, rat rods, street rods, cars from every decade. If you’re nearby, you need to check it out.

This year, my Dart almost didn’t make it. I’d been fighting with a 2bbl conversion on my slant six for almost three months. (You may remember my short write up about projects gone wrong.) Anyway, I gave it the old college try. Hours before I was supposed to load up my family in the Dart for the two hour drive to my parents’ house, I installed a new carb that finally brought the beast back to life. After 15 minutes of tuning and a new air filter, we were ready to go.

My dad is a member of the Rogue Mustangs and Classic Fords Club out of Medford, OR. (He drives a Dart, but they let him in anyway. I hear he got quite the hazing before they let him join!) So, we drive down with them. There were also some Chevy’s that tagged along.

The weather was a little cold and drizzly, but it was still a fun trip. Lots more pics after the jump!

Car Show Trophies

By Katherine Helmetag

Atomicalex

There are as many kinds of car show trophies as car shows, everything from bowling trophies to license plates. We gave these chunks of metal out at the Michigan Volkswagen Enthusiasts‘ Motorstadt VI event this year. One of the members did the CAD work and I think they turned out pretty darn cool. What’s the coolest trophy you’ve ever seen?

Springtime Is Here

By David Wallens

Grassroots Motorsports

I know that some parts of the country are currently experiencing a cold snap, but in Florida anyway,  spring is here. Time to get the cool car out of the garage and kick out the cobwebs. We have been giving our Mini Cooper a little extra love. A couple of weeks ago we took it to our local hotrod cruise night. It might not have been the fastest or most expensive car, but it surely turned some heads. Has everyone else gotten their ride out of mothballs yet?
