NAIAS 2008: Striking Matte Gallardo
By John
Editor
Matte-finish cars were all over SEMA last year, and Lambo isn’t letting this hottest of trends pass them by. The Gallardo below is painted in Marrone Apus, which is apparently Italian for:
"An elegant shade halfway between brown and black, [which] gives off exquisite golden reflections in the sunlight due to a pigment able to imbue the paint with an iridescent look."
And God, does it look awesome. I think it gives the Italian Stallion kind of a military black-ops feel, and I dig it big time. Of course, the Murcilago finished in Blu Cepheus is pretty sick to, although if I had the opportunity to own a Lambo, I wouldn’t care what color it was. At all. Check out more pics and read the full press release over at Winding Road.

All Work And No Play

For some reason, I’m a sucker for driving games. So when I looked into the Intel booth and saw some F1-looking cars hooked up to video monitors, I figured it would be a great chance for Sean and me to spend a few moments off our feet, racing each other! Turned out this wasn’t so much a video game but a webcam mounted onto a remote control car about half a mile away. Sean and I would be driving head to head remotely using WiMax technology (basically, long-range wireless: several miles versus dozens to hundreds of feet for WiFi). Sean of course spanked me at this "race" (hey, driving by webcam isn’t easy!) so I didn’t get entered in the drawing for a new laptop. Oh well.

Realm's Sinister '66 Chevy C-10
By Sean
Editor
Walking past Realm’s booth, I couldn’t help but notice this sick 1966 Chevy C-10. This low-profiled old school is decked out in Sikkens black paint and sports a mean LS-1 by Street & Performance. The motor has been juiced up via a Magnuson Eaton supercharger and mated to a 4L60E tranny, while spent gasses are kicked out via a Borla exhaust system. The rubber hits the road via huge Asanti wheels which tuck in nicely thanks to the QA-1 shocks, and Xciting Lighting provides a modern touch to the classic body. Realm provided the audio for this custom project, filling the interior with their LS6c 6.5" component speakers that are powered by an A300.2 2-channel amp, and a D500.1 mono Class-D amplifier delivers power to the low-end. A pair of Realm’s new thin subwoofers were supposed to be in the truck, but weren’t ready for production in time to make it to the show.

Alpine's Demo Vehicles Make Waves!
By Sean
Editor
Every year, Alpine builds a breathtaking demo vehicle. Past projects like the Sinister 6, the chop-top Mini Cooper, and last year’s Imprint RLS, were all wicked, but this year they went completely crazy. To promote their new marine line, Alpine built both a custom ski boat and a tow vehicle. The boat started life as an worn out 25-foot 1994 Commander V-bottom, but after 4000 hours of work it’s been completely transformed. The guys at Alpine shaved and molded the factory lines, straightened the fiberglass hull, resculpted the intakes and completely reshaped the interior.
For details about the tow vehicle, more photos, and a video walk-around of this insane boat, head over to the SoundDomain Blog!
What? WHAT? Damn, That's Loud!
By Juan

For CES, Alpine wanted to recreate the feeling of sitting inside a battle-ready SPL contender, and they succeededbig time. At their booth, there’s a small enclosure loaded with subwoofers and powered by one of their new monster 2000 watt class D amplifiers, and it’sliterallynot for the faint of heart. Now, I’ve been involved in car audio for the better part of 20 yearsas both an enthusiast and sound off judgeso I’ve sat inside some pretty loud cars. This is probably the loudest area I’ve experienced. To give you an idea of just how loud it is, a jumbo jet at takeoff emits approximately 140 decibels. Inside the Alpine’s little chamber, the volume hits 150dB. Luckily, I was wearing ear protection and had a thumb switch to trigger if it got too loud. It was a pretty cool experience, and it was also a good way of showing how Alpine is diving headfirst into the large SPL amp market. Check out the video.

Portable Nav Gets Biggie Sized!
By Juan
SoundDomain Guru
For some people, one of the hurdles of going with a portable navigation system over an installed unit is the display size. Well, the guys at Garmin have taken care of that by introducing the Nuvi 5000, a portable navigation device which sports a large 5.2" display. Along with that, they’ve included an external signal display function, FM TMC traffic receiver capability, the ability to display MSN dynamic content and a sweet function which lets users input destinations directly from their home PC. And since today’s navigation devices can’t just be navigation devices, the Nuvi 5000 offers a few other trick features like an internal MP3 player, an audio book reader and built in games. Check out more pics over at the SoundDomain Blog!
