Super Chevy’s Project American Heroes brings this timeless classic to the auction block to raise money for AFF programs nationwide. This year’s car will be auctioned at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Orange County, CA, the first at this location, on June 26th. Legendary Smokey Yunick Chevelle on eBay

By Brian Lohnes

BangShift.com

One of the coolest and most legendary stock cars to never run a race is for sale on eBay for the low, low price of $950,000. It is Smokey Yunick’s Chevelle that was entered at the 1968 Daytona 500, denied entrance and never saw a race track again. It’s packed with subtle enhancements and sly features that caused tech inspectors to throw the red flag in the pits. This is the car that people claim to be 15/16ths scale, which it is not.

So what were some of the things that made the tech inspectors see red? A front bumper cut and made taller by a couple inches to form an air dam, flushed out glass, a vortex interrupter formed by altering the rear of the roof, a custom frame, dropped floors to form a belly pan, and a host of other stuff that wasn’t specifically banned in the rule book, but was after they saw this car.

All those alterations eventually became standard equipment on any big level stock car, but like most things, Yunick was years ahead of the curve. It would be more than cool to get this thing in a wind tunnel and see how it actually does and see how the modifications made the car a better or worse performer.

If you swing a wrench, you should hold Yunick in high esteem. We say he was one of the best to ever ply the trade. Tech inspectors, pray that no one with his handle on rule book manipulation shows up at your track!

A big thanks to BangShift.com reader and forum member Spidergearsman for the tip!

Cars By The Water is a great theme, and Andrea’s mint Chevelle against a backdrop of slightly unkempt dock real estate captures it perfectly. If you see a photo you’d like to see featured as a Photo of the Day, drop me a line!

Now here’s a project that’s gonna be fun to follow on CarDomain. How about a frame off resto on a ’67 Chevelle that’s gonna be motivated by a “454 Big Block 70 over with Edlebrock tunnel ram and two Demon 650cfm carbs, blueprinted and dyno’ed at 870 horses”? See more on Romell’s ride page.

A Chevelle Cooked Medium Rare

By Brian Lohnes

BangShift.com

There’s good and bad in this video. The bad is the obvious nitrous pop which blows the hood scoop off the nice looking red Chevelle and then turns into a raging inferno shortly afterward. The good is that the track personnel responded instantly and kept the car from becoming charcoal. We’re sure there was lots of repair work involved here, but at least he still had a car to fix!

Good work by the track safety crew of reacting without hesitation or delay. The guy who gets right after the fire has some brass ones, he was right up on it in a t-shirt!

Sick Chevelle Burnout

By Michael Berenis

Tampa Sports Car Examiner

When it comes to performing burnouts, there is simply no better tire roasting machine than a Chevelle. A well proportioned light weight chassis coupled with 732 all-motor horsepower can only lead to a beautiful display of rubber homicide.  Read more about classic Chevelle burnouts at Tampa Sports Car Examiner.

The Story of a Chevelle and A Demolished Dealership

By Brian Lohnes

BangShift.com

We ran into a bittersweet story on SouthtownStar.com about an Illinois man who owns a 1967 Chevelle that he bought brand new from the now demolished Sunrise Chevrolet located in Midlothian, Illinois. Upon hearing that the dealer was closed, he managed to get his car on the property to take some last photos before the wrecking ball flattened the place forever.

The Chevelle is a really georgeous 1967 SS that has been put back to stock condition after living lots of its life with a 500hp, 427ci big-block under the hood. It was nut-and-bolt restored and has scored nearly 980 points on a 1,000-point judging scale. The good news is that the guy still drives the thing.

Lots of car dealerships are going to meet the same fate as Sunrise Chevrolet because they either could not sustain their business, or they had the rug yanked out from under them by the very companies whose products they dutifully sold for decades.

There was a time when a car dealership represented lots of good things. It was a community hub for employment, it was a literal holding yard for all the gearhead desires any car crazy kid harbored, and it was a destination for a dad and his son to go see the new models (even if they weren’t buying) every fall.

Anyone else out there own an original car from a local dealer?

By Jim Brennan

UDMan

Welcome to another installment of the CarDomain Obscure Muscle Car Parking Lot, a regular feature which aims to expand the definition of what a muscle car is, and to discover hidden treasures while doing so. During the 1970s, the age of the fire breathing muscle car was quickly coming to an end, though there were several surprises. One such surprise is the first station wagon that wore the heralded SS badge. Introducing a true paradox, the 1973 Chevrolet Chevelle SS station wagon.

LS7-Powered Chevelle

By Jen Dunnaway

Lined up in the Concourse area was a whole slew hopefuls for the upcoming Optima Street Car Invitational, a pro-street faceoff that’ll be taking place November 7th at Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch in Nevada. There was a ton of domestic muscle in this lineup, but this eye-searing green Chevelle, built by The Roadster Shop, was an absolute standout with its ultra-clean LS7. There’s very few times I’ve seen color-matched wheels and satin black trim actually work on a classic car, but this big bowtie nailed the look just about perfectly. Final contestants for the Street Car Invitational will be selected later this week at the SEMA show–watch for the competition to air on SPEED beginning January 30th.
