China’s Massive Idea

By Stephanie Porteus

HotRodHoney

Everyone knows that China is the most densely populated country, and with their economy booming, this of course means they are also dealing with ever growing over-populated traffic conditions. How do they intend to deal with this? By replacing the regular mass transit buses with Jumbo Buses that go down the highway right over cars! Cleverly using the regular space between both lanes and bridges to alleviate congestion and even lower construction costs. They are scheduled to start constructing the first 186km of track at the end of the year. Can you imagine these here in the States? Somewhere like NYC? Personally, I think the concept is pretty neat, though I wonder about the safety of it, especially if something were to go wrong. What do you think? One more pic and demo video after the jump.

How Can You Tell That It’s Beijing Motor Show Time Again?

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

The Beijing Motor Show is coming up, so get ready for another attack of the clones as the next generation of made-in-China imitaties flows forth from the automotive sweatshops of Geely, Chery, Dongfeng, and their ilk. One of the copy-bots I especially like is Geely’s new GLEagle, which looks a little like a retro-styled Samurai with a dash of FJ Cruiser thrown in for good measure. The high tube-steel bed rails just might be the only thing on this cute rig that’s original, though I’m getting the feeling I’ve seen those before too–Subaru Baja, maybe? In any case, wait’ll you see the new imitation London cab with which Geely is hoping to take over London from–um, actual London cabs. They’re calling it the “Englon”…come on, with a name like that, couldn’t they have at least had a sense of humor about it and just called it the “Engrish”? More pics below the jump, and read up on the latest Beijing Motor Show party-crashers at thetycho.com.

Camaro To Be Sold To Dongfeng, Will Go FWD in 2013

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

GM is expected to announce later today at the New York International Auto Show that its Camaro nameplate will be sold off to the Chinese company Dongfeng, famous for its fake Hummer and Genesis-like Coupe. Over the next couple of years, Dongfeng will then transition the iconic American ponycar to its own front-wheel drive platform to cut costs, with the first of their revised Camaros hitting showrooms in 2013. The result is likely to be something like a Tiburon with a restyled Camaro front clip. Stay tuned for more specific renderings and the press release later this afternoon!

Hummer Gets The Axe As China Deal Falls Through

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

GM’s Hummer division, slated to be sold off to Chinese manufacturer Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Company, will instead be discontinued as communist red tape prevented the sale from being completed within the required timeline. Hummer thus becomes the latest casualty of GM’s restructuring effort, after Pontiac and Saturn officially bit the dust late last year. So does this mean the Third World won’t get to enjoy a glitchy, combustion-prone, lead-painted, crash-test-failing, safety-delete version of GM’s obsolete behemoth? The closest they’ll still be able to get is the Chinese knockoff Dongfeng EQ2050 Warrior. More details here.

Old Guy in China Fights "Unsafe Driving" With Brick

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

Running a red light is one of the most dangerous things a driver can do, and one 74 year-old resident of Lanzhou, China has had enough of it. Citing the fact that he’s almost been killed by drivers ripping through the crosswalk in front of his residence, Yan Zheng-ping has taken to bashing the offending cars with a brink. Though he’s reportedly attacked 30 vehicles, local police haven’t taken any action yet, and his vigilante actions have some residents referring to Zheng-ping as the “elderly hero.” Check out the full article—and an interview with the crosswalk crusader—over on China News Wrap.

More Weirdness From China: Banana-Like Dongfeng Coupe To Return

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

This awkward offering from notorious automotive counterfeiters Dongfeng (the company that brought you the fake Chinese Hummer)–was, by all accounts, basically laughed out of the Beijing Auto Show in 2006. According to our charmingly ESL blogger over on thetycho, “even the not extremely critical Chinese laughed their heart out” when the coupe besmirched the show floor that year. However, this hasn’t stopped the industrious copycats from promising to display their kinda-Tiburon, kinda-Genesis creation at the show again this year, presumably with minor modifications that’ll help make it less prone to ridicule. Hmm, we’ll see about that! More pics after the jump.

Chinese Transformers!

By John Coyle

Editor

Ok, so these junkyard sculptures don’t actually transform, they’re made out of scrap cars, and they’re definitely not licensed by Hasbro. But in all fairness, these babies probably look more like Optimus Prime’s ilk than the "Transmorphers" being peddled in Hong Kong’s street markets. Four more pics after the jump. Chinese Authorities Don't Mess Around

By John Coyle

Editor

After taking a look at this thing, I don’t think I’ll ever complain about speed bumps—even really burly ones—ever again. Seriously, is this concrete snake run thing insane or what? If I was faced with something like this, I know I’d probably slow to a crawl. I bet the local body shop is stoked about this baby. Check out another pic after the jump.
