Lincoln To Auction Off Concept Vehicles

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

We know how you all like to gripe and moan about all the sweet concept cars that’re unveiled every year at the auto shows but will never be available for purchase. Well guess what: they are now–as long as you don’t mind that they’re Lincolns. The 2004 Mark X concept below, the Lincoln version of Ford’s Thunderbird, will be among those put up for auction, along with (in order of appearance after the jump) the 2001 MK9 concept, the 2004 Aviator, the 2005 MKS, and (total hotness) the 2004 Navicross. The only problem: they’re not going to be able to be legally registered to drive in the US, which is really a shame. And I imagine that getting parts for at least some of them might present some problems. See more pics at Carscoop.

Hemmings Find of the Day: 1994 Ford Powerstroke Concept Truck

By Dan Strohl

Hemmings

Dodge? Ranger? Escort? Homebuilt eye fryer? None of the above: Though it looks like it’s been through the hands of one capable Barris-type customizer and one 18-year-old kid with a Pep Boys charge account, it’s actually a diesel-powered Ford concept truck. Thankfully, Ford didn’t go with the kissy-lips design language for the rest of its Ford truck lineup (can you just imagine that bumper/grille in red?). In the pictures, it appears to have held up much better than many other concept vehicles from that era, and is likely a running, driving truck. Read more at Hemmings.

Fugliest Concept Car In Recent Memory

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

What do you think–should BMW put this concept X9 into production? It kind of looks like what might result if you put a Dodge Stratus and an Ariel Atom in one of Brundlefly’s telepods. Hey, at least it’s different, and if nothing else it’d sure shake up BMW’s undifferentiated small/medium/large design strategy. See more views below the jump, via Jalopnik.

The Fourvette

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

Every so often, the prospect of a four-door Corvette rears its ugly head. The current set of rumors and renderings gets its heft from some comment made last year by Bob Lutz, who claims that the new Camaro is cannibalizing Corvette sales. The solution? A four-door, G8-based ‘Vette powered by a V6 for improved fuel economy, a great way to have your midlife crisis and still get the kids to soccer practice without running afoul of seatbelt laws. The General also believes the Fourvette to be the perfect ploy to draw in the female market, once again showing how sorely he underestimates us. Mr. Angry is concerned that these kinds of idiotic ideas have a way of snowballing into a production-ready vehicle before you know it, but I have faith that cooler heads will prevail. Why would GM cook up a competitor to its own Camaro? Why would this competitor take the form of the iconic Corvette, already a niche brand whose limited sales aren’t necessarily a problem? It all seems a little far-fetched, but stupider things have happened. Just mention the Panamera around any Porsche enthusiast and you’ll see what I mean. More at Ridelust and Autoguide.

Hot Or Not? DeLorean Solstice

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

This could very well be just another one from the wild-ass rumor mill, but Jalopnik claims that the recently-reconstituted DeLorean Motor Company is seriously considering giving the Solstice a second lease on life. Under the scheme, DMC would supplement its limited output of refurbished DeLoreans with a run of DeLorean-badged Solstices (hey: they could call it the DeL Sol, get it?), and to this end, they’ve acquired a GXP for teardown and are eyeing GM’s defunct plant in Wilmington as their possible future assembly line. We’ll see, but if they do it, it’s going to need some gullwings.  Via Jalopnik.

The Gorgeous New Infiniti Essence

By Antonio Alvendia

Antonio Alvendia

“Oh my god!”

“Simply stunning!”

“That’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen!”

You can expect to hear people to say things like that when you tag along with the Essence, Infiniti’s new flagship concept car and 20th birthday present to itself, on a mini-tour of the U.S. This is the first that many Americans will be seeing of this 592-horsepower car since its debut at the Geneva auto show back in March. GTbyCITROEN Supercar Concept Rolling in London!

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

The GTbyCITROEN was originally designed to appear in Gran Turismo 5, so seeing a real live version rolling on the streets of London is pretty wild.  Personally, I don’t think it looks anymore real navigating the city’s famously fierce traffic than it does in the virtual world, and I mean that as a supreme compliment. It’s really too bad the General has a lock on the Transformers movies, as this baby would have made a perfect Autobot.  World Car Fans is reporting that six of the hyper-futuristic concepts will be built, and speculating that power will come from a high-output Ford V8. At over two million a pop, it’s not like you’re going to be seeing one at your local show and shine anytime soon, but if you’re in the neighborhood, you’ll be able to see the GTbyCITROEN at this weekend’s Festival of Speed at Goodwood.

Favorite Concept Car

By David Clarke

highspeedhijinks

Quite often here in the blog we throw you a teaser of things to come in the automotive market place: renderings, concepts, and a mule or two for those lucky enough to live that long. Alas, most concepts never make it past their auto show debuts before–they’re put out to pasture, absorbed by obscure private collections, or just crushed. In a lot of cases, we mourn their passing or rage against the automakers that won’t build one for us to buy. So my question is:  out of all the concepts you’ve seen over the years, which one would you want? My pick would be the 1997 Pontiac Rageous. For more on the Rageous, follow the jump.

The Ride A Cop Would Kill For

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

Carbon Motors recruited police input to come up with their E7 prototype–the ultimate cop dream car.  This baby will be running a 300-hp clean-diesel motor, 360-degree flashing LED’s, bullet-resistant door panels, integrated shotgun mounts (!), rear suicide doors, and voice-recognition software that scans and identifies license plates. Philadelphia police officer Carl Latorre says, “I am so excited about this car. This car rates up there with cops carrying automatic weapons to combat what the criminals carry now.” Wow (and yikes). With a 0-60 of 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 155, the purpose-built cop car sounds like it’ll rival most criminals’ getaway vehicles. What do you think–would you want police in your town to be so equipped? More pics below the jump, and read up at CNN. Thanks to Mike for the tip!
