D.W. Gets Emotional Over Old Mountain Dew Car

As expected, the NASCAR race in Bristol was a blast, but since I’m a total sap, one of my favorite moments from yesterday’s broadcast didn’t have anything to do with the actual race. Just before the green flag dropped, Jeff Hammond presented his buddy Darrell Waltrip with the ’81 Buick that he drove to back-to-back series victories in ’81 and ’82, and D.W. was obviously overwhelmed. For a minute, I actually thought he was going to lose it! Apparently, the number 11 Mountain Dew was the only one of his race cars that he didn’t already own, and given that he had such incredible success behind the wheel, it’s easy to understand sentimental value of that old Buick. Too bad he didn’t take it on to the track to turn some donuts!
