Gary and Pam Beineke’s 1971 Dodge Daytona in the A2 Wind Tunnel
By Brian Lohnes
BangShift.com
Gary and Pam Beineke’s series of 1971 Chrysler wing cars are all based on early 1970s Chrysler documents that showed the company had tested scale models of aero ’71 cars in the wind tunnel. These reports were kept secret for decades, and once unearthed, served as inspiration for Gary and Pam to build several of the “never built” cars. Their latest is a 1971 Dodge Daytona built in the likeness of the Bobby Issac driven, K&K Insurance sponsored 1969 Daytona. Instead of just doing a show car tribute, the pair built a real land speed racer and have attacked Maxton, with plans for Bonneville this year as well as Loring, Maine. They went the extra mile and put the car in the A2 wind tunnel to get an idea of how the car would perform at speed. Continue reading at Bangshift.com

Angry Elephant: Dyno Video of Lee Sicilio’s Hemi Daytona LSR Car
By Brian Lohnes
BangShift.com
Our buddy Scott Clark, known as DieselGeek on the BangShift.com forums spends some of his free time tuning fuel injection setups on all different kinds of machinery. He’s messed around with everything from road race Porsches to the infamous “Turd” Fairmont that was equipped with a turbo LS Chevy engine. He recently posted some video of a hella bad ass LSR machine on the rollers during a tuning session. It’s must see gearhead TV.
The car sports a 930hp Ray Barton built, 498ci Hemi that’s topped with two throttle bodies that could swallow toddlers whole. The guys are getting their tuneup in order for Bonneville action this year and the 230mph range is where the car will hopefully end up.

Major Wreckage on the Old Beach Course at Daytona
By Brian Lohnes
BangShift.com
We unearthed this radical ancient video of Modified jalopies whooping it up on the Daytona Beach circle track in the late ’40s or early ’50s. These guys really thrashed the cars, almost to the point of complete destruction. Hang on for the end of the video to see things get really out of control. It’s obvious that these racers knew that a fresh race car was just 10 or 20 bucks away at the nearest wrecking yard. Yeah, the old-school oval-trackers were every bit as neat as the early drag machinery, and this video prooves why.
When the cars start flying out of control in the end quarter of the video, pay attention to how well they seem to handle flying through the air and landing roof down. Granted, they are landing on sand for the most part, but we’d have expected lots more pancaking of roofs. Maybe those threaded pipe roll bars really work!

Buddy Baker’s Race-Winning Daytona on eBay
By Jen Dunnaway
Editor
It seems there’s been a crop of famous race cars on eBay lately, but the Dodge Daytona raced by NASCAR legend Buddy Baker back in the day stands out from all the overpriced never-rans and should’ve-beens that have been popping up recently. This Daytona was the car that Baker drove to victory in the 1970 Southern 500, the very race we’re going to be watching this Saturday night at Darlington Raceway. The seller says it’s been cleaned and detailed, but not restored, and that “it is just as it was last raced in 1970.” The following year, NASCAR outlawed the big hemi, and Mopar entries would’ve been running 305′s. Looks like this Number 6 got out of the game just in time. Check out the auction on eBay!

A 1993 Dodge Daytona Goes Out in a Fog of Glory
By Brian Lohnes
BangShift.com
Let’s say that you have a 1993 Dodge Daytona that has thrown a rod and is emotionally dead to you. There are a couple of options to move on at that point. At least two of them involve a tow truck and a junkyard. These guys chose the third option. Pin the throttle wide open and create the worlds largest smoke machine.
The motor sounds totally awful and this method of motor destruction isn’t exactly “green,” but forgive us if we can’t stop ourselves from laughing at the sheer absurdity of the situation. Did they build a steam powered version of the Daytona?

Big Willie’s 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona Street Racer on eBay
By Brian Lohnes
BangShift.com
There are not too many cars you can name from the West Coast that are famous for street racing, but here is one of them. It is the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona that is one of three that were supposedly given by Chrysler to Big Willie Robinson and his wife Tomiko to help them promote the Brotherhood of Street Racers in Los Angeles, which was actually an organization designed to keep kids away from other crime. Big Willie also opened the legendary Terminal Island drag strip under the Brotherhood name.
We found this car listed on eBay with information that states it is a factory 440-powered car that was at one time raced with a Hemi and a Clutchflite. The hood scoop has ties to the movie Two Lane Blacktop that featured another Daytona with this same hood. Big Willie was famous for a magazine ad for American Racing Wheels, but the car in that ad photo is not the same one as this.
We also found a story from the guy who bought this Daytona directly from Big Willie’s back yard several years ago. Click here to see that story on the DodgeCharger.com site.
If you can afford $250,000 for some 1970s street racing history, go to the eBay link!

Hemmings Finds of the Day: Kissimmee Kars
By Dan Strohl
Hemmings
Mecum’s Kissimmee auction is scheduled for later this month, and the folks at Mecum wanted to make sure you knew what all they’re selling in Florida, so they listed just about their entire inventory on Hemmings.com. That includes some interesting items like a 1964 Datsun 1200 1/4-ton pickup, the Bobby Allison Dodge Daytona, the Herbie’s Hugger Super Stock L89 Camaro, the 2002 Mercury Marauder two-door convertible concept car, a GMC-based swamp buggy (up high so the gators won’t get you, Amos Moses), and a 1983 Jeep Scrambler. See them all at Hemmings

Daytona in the Barn: The End, After the Barns
By Ryan Brutt
HemiPwr70
Our little expedition wasn’t done finding cool cars in barns. The closest larger town was Canton, and it was still quite a drive to get back there. We were all starving and dirty. So I had never been to a Maid-Rite, so we stopped in and I treated Shad and Scott to lunch. It was the least I could do for such an incredible morning.
We sat at the table and watched the people trip over themselves walking past the Superbird, and people taking pictures. It is always fun having a cool car. Scott showed me where the old Canton Train Station was with old Whitcomb engine, and then drove me past the old International Plant where they built International Vehicles. I guess after International left there years ago and it was a used tire storage place and started on fire, went on burning for something like a week.

ANGRIER on the Cover of Hemmings Muscle Machines
By Rob Einaudi
Editor-in-Chief
Never one to be subtle, Mike Musto, AKA Mr. Angry, completed a 2.5 year build on project “ANGRIER”, a 1969 Dodge Daytona clone. The outlandish shape, matte black paint and 18 inch wheels with pizza pie size brakes rotors have some Mopar purists in an uproar, while others are totally diggin’ it.
Either way, the guys at Hemmings Muscle Machines took notice and slapped it on the cover for the their January 2010 issue. It’s on newsstands now, so check it out!
