Lamest Part or Accessory That You Ended Up Keeping?

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

Ever buy a used car that had a part or accessory that you swore you’d remove immediately, but ended up keeping? My old ’70 Fury vert had one of these goofy chrome barefoot gas pedals. My first plan was to get rid of it, but I ended up just thinking it was funny and left it alone. I wonder if it’s still with the car after all these years…

How about you? What’s the lamest part or accessory that you ended up keeping?

Bonus Hemmings Find of the Day – Half a Fury

By Dan Strohl

Hemmings

The only thing I’magonna say about this 1970 Plymouth Sport Fury currently for sale on Hemmings.com is that, traditionally, Six Pack refers to Dodge’s triple-carb setup, while Six Barrel refers to Plymouth’s version. Offered for $45,000 out of Renton, Washington. From the seller’s description:

1970 Plymouth Sport Fury GT, super rare V code 440+6 car, PH23VOF143370, has original fender tag, door sticker and broadcast sheet, car is black with black int and white strobe stripes, column shift bench seat car, still wearing whats left of its original paint and is 1 of 11 known real V codes, now the bad, car needs total restoration! car is rusty and was wrecked in RF early in life, non original but correct F 440 HP block and 3410672 6 pack trans, have complete 6 pack set up, have lots of NOS for the car, including some sheet metal, H 70-15 polyglas tires, trim lenses etc, probably the only V code fury GT in this color combo.. this is a big project but once restored will be the only one on the planet like it..so if you are seeking that car that is so elusive most dont even know of their existance this may be for you.

I Hate 'Oh No' Moments

By Ron Honig

WaytooFurious

I couldn’t believe it the other week when I had an ‘oh no’ moment. To cut a long story short, I had been on a holiday where I had driven the Plymouth halfway across the country to visit my father. Covering a total of 2,000 miles, I drove through torrential rain storms, insane Sydney traffic and what seemed like endless roadworks on the Hume Freeway. All of it without putting so much as a scratch on my car! When I got back home I decided to take the car to the local car wash. It was there that I managed to side swipe a trailer while backing up. I didn’t see it because it was out of sight behind a large 4wd. Nuts, 2,000 miles without a scratch and I manage to beat it to death at the local freaking car wash! I was so angry with myself that I kicked the bumper, it didn’t help. But it is better now as it has been repaired and looks like new. So when was the last time that you had a motoring ‘oh no’ moment?

Nice Fury

By Rob Einaudi

Cody’s 1970 Fury II popped up in the new rides list on Friday. I owned a ’70 Fury III convertible in this same color for a few years back in the 90s. Seeing this pic of the menacing front end makes me want my old car back. Wonder where it is now…

The Wheels Maketh the Car

By Ron Honig

WaytooFurious

It has taken me a while but I have finally gotten round to putting my Magnums on the Plymouth.  To say that they have changed the look of the car is an understatement. I chose the Magnums because they are period correct, I have never been a fan of new style wheels on older cars.

Getting the wheels onto the car actually turned into a slight challenge. When the tyre shop pulled off the old rims we discovered that the previous owner had ‘upgraded’ to slightly bigger drums on the front. They are not flat like the ones on the back but have more of a dome shape. My mechanic seems to think that they may have come off a small truck. Unfortunately this meant we couldn’t just bolt the new wheels on. We needed some spacers, otherwise they would just warp. Luckily one of the tyre guys was able to put me onto an out of the way store that supplies a lot of speedway racers with racing gear. The spacers fitted perfectly straight out of the packet, and the rest as they say is history.

Another interesting thing I discovered is that the original tyres on the car were white walls. The previous owner had simply flipped the tyres around when the white walls had faded. This car really does have a lot of history, I almost wish it could talk. More pics after the jump.

Is This Car Really Worth $175,000?

By Ron Honig

WaytooFurious

I came across this Plymouth Fury on E-bay the other day. There is no doubt that it is a sensational car because it looks like a lot of time and money has been spent on it. What I find interesting is that the Buy It Now is set at $175,000. Is it really worth that much? Personally, for me, it’s not. With cars it is very easy to get excited about a project and over-capitalise. It reminds me of a client that we had when I was selling cars for a living. He had invested thousands in doing up a standard Ford Falcon. He had installed a racing motor and racing gearbox as well as various other bits and pieces. The problem was that we could not take it as a trade in because he wanted too much money for it. Also he would never get back the amount of money that he had invested in it by selling it privately. I don’t know what he did with his car in the end, but I do know that he was very disappointed because it was not as easy to sell as he thought it would be. So have you ever over-capitalised on a car?

Bad Deal or Good Deal?

By Ron Honig

WaytooFurious

I was talking with some friends the other day and we were discussing the best and worst car deals that we have had over the years. My choices were easy. The worst deal that I have had is my 70 Dodge Charger. Despite having an independent inspection done, the car was not what I expected when it arrived. To put it simply it had more holes than a piece of Swiss cheese! I should have flown half way around the country and inspected it myself. It would have avoided a lot of headaches. My lawyers did eventually get some compensation from the company that did the inspection but it was not worth the grief.

The best deal that I have ever had on buying a car is my 69 Plymouth Fury. I have always liked the shape of these but was never able to find one that wasn’t a rust bucket. I finally got lucky on eBay. I didn’t bid on the auction but noticed it didn’t the reserve. I made the owner what I thought was a ridiculous offer, just over $3,000, and was really surprised when he accepted. I wound up with a great car with a genuine 43,000 miles on the clock.

So what has been your best or worst deal?

This Week's Amoco Ultimate Winner!

By Rob Einaudi

Honestly, I had nothing to do with this. I know FuryPaul from Moparts, and he has provided us with some great photos of the Retro Dealership at the All-Chrysler Nationals and the Bay Country Region VCCA Fall Blow-Out. So I was pretty stoked when I learned that the guys had picked his big C-body (entry # 1490) as this week’s Amoco Ultimate winner!

29 years ago, in 1979, I bought my first car: a 1967 Plymouth Fury III with a 383 and non-functioning factory air. Two years ago, I found this one on eBay and won it after a momentary lapse of impulse control. Same year, model, body style, power train and color! Cleaner and straighter than my first one, though, with only 76,000 original miles!

Enjoy your $250 in free gas, Paul!

There are still more chances to win, so if you haven’t already thrown your hat into the ring, make sure to enter the Amoco Ultimate Your Car Is Worth It Photo Contest!
