What Cars Are You Looking Forward to Seeing on the Road in 2009?

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

I’m really looking forward to seeing the new Camaro, 370Z and Genesis Coupe on the roads this year. I’m also hoping to see a bunch of plain jane Challenger SEs doing mundane daily driver duty. And of course I can’t wait to see the Ford Fusion Hybrid invade neighborhoods dominated by the Prius. How about you?

Hyundai Genesis Coupe Crashed in Korea

By John Coyle

Editor

The Genesis Coupe hasn’t reached the States yet, but one of Hyundai’s RWD sports cars has already died on its native soil. Apparently, it rounded a corner and then proceeded to slam into a concrete post. The results, as you can see, weren’t pretty, and the driver and passenger were critically injured. A Korean source has reported that the car was sporting "temporary tags" and given the fact that the airbags didn’t deploy, our buddies at Jalopnik have speculated that it was actually wearing manufacturer plates, and that this isn’t a consumer car, but rather a Hyundai tester. Makes sense to me. More pics of the carnage after the jump.

Personally, I think golf is kind of silly. I’ve never played, I don’t have any desire to play, and I think the world would be a better place if 75% of the world’s courses suddenly became go kart tracks. But it’s still awesome watching a pro beam someone—on purpose!—with a golf ball. That’s just funny as hell. Anyway, here’s the news:

  • So I liked Hyundai’s new Genesis sedan, and I honestly expect to like the Coupe. Obviously, both are an attempt to change the company’s budget image and move up market. But I was still a little surprised to see Prada—like, the $500-pants Prada—will to be crafting a special edition for the Seoul Motor Show. CarScoop
  • Along with the 510, the 240Z is regarded as one of the first truly collectible Japanese cars, and expectations are high for the release of the new 370Z. To get everyone up to speed on just how the model has changed across its many generations, check out this killer design dissection. Jalopnik
  • There are actually lots of things happening in the automotive world, but if you’re Robert Farago, the only thing worth covering is the bailout of the Big Three. And while it must be lame for him to realize Uncle Sam might help the companies he so despises live to fight another day, for those of us who like the idea of domestic vehicles, it’s actually pretty cool. The Truth About Cars
  • Nissan’s GT-R has won the ‘Most Advanced Technology Award’ in this year’s Japanese Car of the Year awards. Are you as shocked as we are? Of course you aren’t, but I still thought it was worth mentioning. Congrats, Godzilla. Motor Authority

All Up In Their Booth: Hyundai at SEMA

By John Coyle

Editor

There were only six cars in the Hyundai booth, but there was a lot of excitement. The 300HP Genesis Coupe is almost ready to drop, and the sedan version has been getting good reviews, so the Hyundai folks were in great spirits. Rhys Millen was on hand to reveal his tuned version of the Coupe—think wide body, carbon fiber everything, cage, more ponies—and there were also versions from Street Concepts and HKS. Rides and DUB Magazine also delivered editions of the Genesis sedan, and both offerings looked super slick. Along with the custom cars, the Hyundai brass also showcased an supercharged version of its Tau V8 that uses variable displacement technology. It’s the first of its type in the world and I thought it was pretty sweet. But more than anything? I can’t wait to see what the kids start doing with the Coupe once it hits the street. Tons more pics after the jump.

Rides Magazine Pimps a Hyundai Genesis for SEMA

By John Coyle

Editor

When a got a chance to drive Hyundai’s new flagship a couple of months ago, I was pretty impressed with it. And while I thought the interior was great, the stock model doesn’t have anything on the one in the pimped-out Genesis Rides is bringing to SEMA. The upgrades to the exterior were pretty subtle—custom bumpers, side skirts, 22" wheels—the guys really went to town on the interior. In addition to the sweet suede accents and the custom rear console, the builders also added, like, just about everything Apple makes. The baby is sporting two Mac Minis, a 20-inch Apple Cinema Display, a Mac Book Air, an iPod touch and an iPhone 3G. Obviously, there’s also high-speed wireless internet, which is build to support 50 people using it simultaneously. I’ll make sure to get a bunch of shots of this baby when I get to the show, but for now, head over to Rides for all the info and a ton more pics.

Sunday, CarDomain’s editorial team is jumping on a plane and heading to Sin City for SEMA. I always have a blast at the show, and I’m totally stoked. But because everything is so crazy there, and I’m going to be running around like a maniac, New on the Net will be on hiatus next week. Look for the its triumphant return on Tuesday, November 11th. I’ll probably be sober by then. Anyway, here’s the news:

  • Over the past year, more Marines have died riding sport bikes than have been killed in combat. As a result, the Core is has started a training program to teach jarheads how to handle the obscene power of modern crotch-rockets. CNN
  • What do Volvo’s safety mobiles and Aston Martin’s V8 Vantage have in common? Well, they both use the same key, and Aston hasn’t tried very hard to hide the fact. Peel off the butter leather on the Vantage fob and you’ll find the Swedish company’s name stamped right on it. Car Magazine
  • Hyundai has released the full stats on the Genesis Coupe, and they’re pretty impressive. So guys, when do we get our test car? And please make sure it’s the turbo, with a stick. GenCoupe
  • One of CarDomain’s advertisers—you know, the folks who provide themoney to keep yours truly employed—wants your input. So if you love theblog and love CarDomain, or kind of like us, or even just love to hateus, we’d appreciate your opinion. Take this Survey

With less than a week to go before SEMA, the Ryhs Millen Genesis Coupe is almost done. The car has received carbon fiber fenders, doors and roof panels, an eight point roll cage, and a host of performance mods. See page two of their ride page for the latest pics of the build!

A new study suggests that Iditarod sled dogs are "superior to most other mammals," due to their aerobic capacity, their ability to efficiently use calories and how quickly they adapt to prolonged strenuous exercise. I thought this was interesting, but I already believed dogs to be superior to most mammals. Anyway, here’s the news:

  • Looks like bad transmissions aren’t the only problem over at Tesla Motors. In addition to playing another round of musical chairs with its executives, the company is laying off workers, and will apparently admit that the its Roadster doesn’t look as hot as the Lotus Elise it’s based off. Ok, I made that last part up. Autoblog
  • Spy shots of Nissan’s new 370Z have been circulating for a little while, but few outside of the company’s design department have gotten a look at the real deal. Apparently, the dudes at Inside Line have had the honor, and they sound impressed. Look for the official debut in LA later this year. Inside Line
  • The Genesis Coupe has launched in Korea, and Hyundai has released the performance figures. The 306 horsepower six will allegedly sprint to 60 in 5.9 seconds, which isn’t as quick as a Mustang GT, but it’s independent read suspension should make it less of a handful to drive. World Car Fans
  • Lotus has always seen weight as the enemy, so it’s no surprise that its light little chassis a great for alternative power plants. The latest triumph? An oil-burning Seven has just won the alt-fuel race from Berkley to Vegas. Bravo, gents! Wired
