R35 Racing in GT1 at Silverstone

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

Last summer, I spent some time covering the American Le Mans series, and obviously, I had a blast. Of course, there weren’t any R35s—are you guys going to freak if I call it a Skyline?—on the grid yet, so I was stoked to stumble across this clip of a weapons-grade version competing in the GT1 class at Silverstone. Now, I know that in American GT1, all-wheel drive isn’t allowed, so even Audi’s mighty TDIs are RWD. Of course, since this race was run over in the UK—where they use “tyres” instead of “tires”—the rules might be different. But regardless of whether Godzilla is pushing two wheels or all four, it totally owns the number 150 Corvette starting at 1:45. Enjoy.

Photos of this badass GT1 spec GT-R have been all over the web for the past few days. Not a whole lot is known about this car or program, but it sure looks hot. More pics at GT-R Blog.

This Just In: New on the Net

By John Coyle

This weekend was awesome, but all the fun I had left me feeling pretty drained. Damn, I really didn’t want to get out of bed this morning. Anyway, here’s the news:

  • For the last couple of years, the Corvettes have basically had the American Le Mans Series’ GT1 class to themselves. Let’s hope they enjoyed it, because it looks like GT1′s days are numbered. Auto Week
  • Here’s some evidence the General is taking its finances pretty seriously these days: the company isn’t buying any Superbowl ad time. Since the commercials are probably my favorite part of the game, I can’t say I’m too pleased about the decision. Anyone remember how awesome they were in ’99 and ’00? Jalopnik
  • Jaguar has registered the names C-XF and C-XE. In case you’re wondering, the "C" stands for concept, so we’ll probably be seeing some trick new rides from Jag in the near future. Think the XE will be a reborn E-Type? World Car Fans
  • John McCain has said that he’s bought American cars all his life. Except for those five foreign cars he currently owns. Oops. Detroit News

Aston Martin DBR9 009 Le Mans 2008 Winner GT1

By Rob Einaudi

Ok, so I got a bit crazy photographing this car after my V8 Vantage test drive. But hey, it won Le Mans this year in the GT1 class, and there isn’t a bad angle on the car. Sadly, I didn’t get to hear it, as Aston Martin had pulled the motor before sending the car on its little publicity tour. But the Aston Martin guys made some vrooming noises as they pushed it back toward the trailer. A ton more pics after the jump.
