What Did You Do This Weekend?

By Weston Henderson

Weston Henderson

As many of you know, I got a new set of rims a few weeks ago and then painted them gold last week. Well I’m happy to say that Tire Rack had the Kumho Ecsta SPT in stock and came through, delivering my tires on Thursday!

Needless to say I got them mounted and balanced over the weekend and was rudely reminded that this process, especially with TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System), gets spendy! On top of that, the tire guys accidentally disconnected my sub, the TPMS is telling me my tires are too low, and they only put 15 pounds of pressure in one of them!

Wood-Lined Trunks: the Latest Craze or Just Plane Crazy?

By Weston Henderson

Weston Henderson

From time to time I stumble across some pretty different stuff on my VW forums. One of the guys on GolfMKV presented the idea of laying down some leftover hardwood in his trunk. What do you think? I think it’s pretty cool. One more pic after the jump, and you can read more about it here.

Dubbed Golf

By Speedhunters

Car Culture At Large

At first I thought it was a Photoshop but looking very closely I realized this was the real deal. Spotted at the Racer86 blog I was reminded at how good the MK5 Golf could look like. Not sure how comfortable the ride would be, but when you want to look cool you will have to sacrifice.

Forge Diverter Valve FTW

By Weston Henderson

GTI Guy

I recently installed the Forge diverter valve with atmospheric spacer on my GTI and it’s honestly pretty sweet. Translation, my turbo now makes that cool and uber desirable ppppsssshhhhhhtttttt sound every time I shift, and it fully restored my boost numbers. In my case, I installed the replacement diverter because the factory valve (shown below) failed shortly after my car was chipped.

Hidden Horsepower

By Weston Henderson

GTI Guy

In order to squeeze the most horsepower possible out of our late model performance cars, it makes sense that we have to turn our eyes to the ECU’s (Engine Control Unit). As it turns out, car manufacturers are able to make the same engine perform much differently for various markets, and in many cases reduce a significant amount of horsepower and torque. September's Amoco Ultimate Winner!

By Katherine Helmetag

AKA atomicalex

I’ll admit it: I’m a sucker for background in a photograph. This shot’s background screams victory, and the reflection of the color onto the silver paint on this GTI pulls the car into the scene and makes it a winner for me. "A perfect blend of personalization without over-the-top modifications. And always a joy to drive, especially on any windy road." Balance is what it’s about, and Matthew Litke’s GTI (entry #899) has got it. Here’s $1000 in Amoco gas to keep your sweet ride going through those twisties.

There are still more chances to win, so if you haven’t already thrown your hat into the ring, make sure to enter the Amoco Ultimate Your Car Is Worth It Photo Contest!

New Golf GTi

By Craig McAlpine

iMotor

When I first saw the images of the new MKVI Golf GTi I must say I though it looked pretty tame (borderline boring). Apart from the R8-inspired fins in the front bumper! Anyhow, with CarDomain users in mind, our art director Slates has designed an interactive modification tool for the GTi and I must say if you don’t go too nuts it looks pretty sweet! Go and have a play with it!

How to Repair Expensive Plastic Lip Kits for $30

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

When Weston installed his Rieger body kit last month we all wondered how long it would be before he smacked the low front lip on something. Well, it took a few weeks. He hit some kind of weird drain grate type thing and cracked the lip pretty badly. But then he fixed it with $30 worth of plastic solvent, bondo and paint. Want to know how? Check out his ride page.

Rieger Body Kit

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

CarDomain staffer Weston Henderson just installed a Rieger body kit on his 2008 GTI and it looks pretty darn sharp (be careful not to scrape, man!). The five piece kit retails for around $1,200. Throw in a bit of paint work and an easy install and you’re in business. Check out Weston’s ride page for more details and pics.

What Did You Do This Weekend?

By Sean

Editor

Friday I picked up my car from Group 2 Motorsports just in time for a perfect sunny Saturday weekend. The guys installed some H&R Premium coilovers, slotted rotors front and rear from Powerslot, Goodridge stainless steel brake lines, a set of Ferodo pads in the front and Hawk in the rear. I also had then toss a B&M short shifter on the GTI as well. Most of the stuff was needed due to general maintenance requirements, but why go stock when you can upgrade? The coilovers ride better than I expected; not too harsh and the ride feels very secure and grounded. But the B&M shifter was by far my favorite addition in this round of upgrades. The OEM shifters found in my VW and previous years can be accurately compared to boat oars, requiring long strokes to move through the gears. The B&M is short and precise, and gives acceleration a renewed excitement. I spent the weekend tearing through various twisty roads all over the area testing out my new go-fast bits. But enough about us…

How about you, what’d you get up to this weekend?
