I Bought It Like That

By Chris Trout

Troutster52

Every week, the local burger joint sponsors a gathering of automotive celebration they call a “classic car show.” I often venture out to check out the sites as heroes display their trophies, cast in steel, rubber and fiberglass. These cars are garage-built badges of honor, valor, mental acuity and unwavering determination. Their displayers, unsung heroes, rescue automotive relics from sun-scorched fields, decaying barns, and apathetic owners, and restore the rust-encapsulated, dry-rotted, mouse-infested hulks to their former glory. These glorious automotive icons glisten, displaying the craftsmanship of their original equipment manufacturer as well as their caretakers.

Rat Rod Tractor

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

Some maniac stuffed a Chevy small-block, along with a Ford front straight-axle and steering box, into an old Worthington tractor: goofy, ridiculous, awful, and awesome all at the same time. And as of right now, it’s sitting at 1000 bucks! Check out the auction on eBay.

Two Engines + One Seat = Brass Balls

By David Clarke

highspeedhijinks

The hot rod culture tends to shift directions depending on what decade it is. In the 70′s, rods weren’t too popular at all, in the 80′s they had their hair-metal revival with ZZ Top’s custom rides, and by the 90′s, builders like Boyd Coddington and Chip Foose were beginning to show that they could be performance jewels. This twin-engine beast I found on eBay harks back to the 60′s when Tommy “TV” Ivo was a household name. It’s a hot rod monster that takes the standard T-Bucket fare over the top, with two 350 Chevy small blocks mated with a Ford 9-inch rear end, mounted to a lengthened and Z’d Model T frame. There’s not much time left on the eBay auction, so check it out now!

What the..?

By Tony Castellano

Tcassa

Every now and then you come across a vehicle that is, well, a bit unusual. Such was the case at a recent car show I attended. This creation was attracting more attention than some of the hot rods on display, and you can probably see why…

Best Of SEMA: Hot Rods

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

There were scads of hot rods at SEMA this year, even more so than in the last couple of years, when the modern hot rod scene was really diversifying and gaining traction with mainstream car culture. The range of the rod genre was astounding–we saw everything from ultra-built trailer queens to bare-bones rats with the road dirt still on ‘em. And now, it’s time for you to decide on the best hot rod of SEMA 2009. Our candidates include the Rolling Bones ’32 Ford, which wins the distance award for driving from New York to Vegas for the show; Piss-Off Pete, an amazing Peterbilt running a twin-supercharged Detroit diesel; the Truckster in the Painless booth, with its hot flat head V8; Bruce Harvey’s supercharged Ratical Model A; and Priapism, the only rod we found at the show that was running two engines. Cast your votes below!

Fireball SEMA Day 2! Celebrites!

By Fireball Tim

Movie Car Design Master

Whew, are my dogs a smokin!’ Pretty sure I’ve walked about 200 miles today, and fended off 200,000 elbows. (Been using my Starbucks cups as defense. Work pretty dang good.) Although the cars were cool, the celebrities showed up in full force! My buddy, MAD MIKE from “Pimp My Ride,” Superstar DAN WOODS from “Chop, Cut, Rebuild,” SuperModel Extraordinaire GENEVIEVE CHAPPELL and TunerSmokin’Hottie CORISSA FURR were struttin’ their gorgeousness.

BEST NEW PRODUCT? LifeTime Oil Filter! They guys really have an awesome product. Never want to buy another filter? Then this is the one for you. Awesome Billet construction and test proven. It gets the Fireball Award!

Rat Rods, my Official Fireball Charger, a bitchin’ Hot Rod from PRO COMP CUSTOMS, super cool bikes, a cool STONEHENGE SERIES Jeep, awesome unique wheels from KURV… and me? I got to hang with my buddy Alan on Car&Driver Radio.

What’s in store for DAY 3? I’m puttin’ on my battle gear and getting ready for North Hall Antics. We’re filming and an episode for “World of Cars” will be up in a week or so. Make sure you subscribe! Rest assured, insanity will ensue manana…

Street Legal Dual-Engine Hot Rod

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

Yannick Sire’s project “Priapism” is beyond insane. Two 350s yoked together with a GTO driveline coupling. Three radiators, two of them angled out from the firewall like an Indy car. Two giant banks of header pipes. Completely hand-fabricated body and chrome-moly tube chassis. The craziest part of it all? He can drive it on the street. Priapism (look it up; it’s funny) is sitting in the DynoJet booth at SEMA bolted up to their hub dyno, but the guys there tell me that it hasn’t actually taken a pull yet. They’re guessing around 900, 950 hp. Sound about right? More pics after the jump.

Rolling Bones Drove Here From New York

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

Keith Cornell and Ken Schmidt’s ’32 Three-Window Coupe struck a nice contrast to SEMA’s scads of glittery show cars, looking spare and mean in the Motorbooks booth with its oil-leak-smelling Y-block and highway crud still clinging to the chassis. Incredibly, the guys actually drove the ’32 here from New York, setting out for SEMA on October 26th and even managing to score a speeding ticket along the way. When you look into this ride’s Mexican-blanket interior and check out the wiperless windshield, minimalist dash, and louvers-and-chicken-wire ceiling treatment, it’s hard not to consider how much we take our modern cars’ creature comforts for granted. Rolling Bones certainly gets the distance award for their burly roadtrip, and extra points for running a SEMA show car in the weather on the open road, just as it should be. More pics below the jump, and check out blogs of Rolling Bones’ cross-country adventure at the Motorbooks RideHub page.

Blown Model A

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

Check out Bruce Harvey and Pro Comp Custom’s totally over-the-top 1930 Ford, the “Ratical.” It’s built to the gills, packing a Keith Black 528 Hemi topped with a 1472 blower and two 1050 Holley Dominators. This is one of those rides that’d probably get you some dirty looks at Billetproof, but you can’t ignore the artistry: literally every part, every surface on this car, inside and out, is sculpted, smoothed, polished–a rolling showpiece. But does it go? See more pics below the jump.
