Pre-49 Jolly
Tcassa
Hot rods were again on the agenda this past weekend here in London, with numerous hot rod and custom car events scattered around the city. But with so much choice, I found it near impossible to decide what show to attend! So I narrowed it down to location (the closer the better!) and made my way to a nice little pre-49 meet and greet. This event was more about quality then quantity, and as you can probably see by the photos, the rods were near spotless! Hi-Boys, Coupes, Buckets and even a Willys Woody were on display making it an all-round great show! Plenty of photos after the jump!

Drag Racing, Swedish Style

Swedes love their American muscle, as I discovered last year at Power Big Meet. And it looks like this event was another cracker! Head over to race68 for loads more photos!

Burnouts From Down Under
By John Coyle

This clip feature highlights from Australia’s largest burnout competition at Avalon Speedway, and while it doesn’t get off to the best start—the first competitor stalls out—there’s plenty of wicked footage here. My favorite contender has to be the second guy. I don’t know what kind of car he’s rocking, but it’s a blue four-door, it says “Elite” on the side, and the motor is sticking halfway out of the hood. Can any of our Aussie members identify it? I started to get a little bit worried about three quarters of the way through his run, because there looked to be some burly flame action brewing in the back, but fortunately no car-b-que occurs. Make sure to watch this clip in a well-ventilated area, there’s a lot of smoke here!

Farm Fresh: Grain Truck Becomes Unexpected Hot Rod
By Dan Strohl
Hemmings
Over the weekend, I took in the Rumblers sixth annual Rumble in the Country down in Terryville, Connecticut, both because I needed to restock on hot rod profiles for Hemmings Motor News and because I’d always heard good things about the show, but never been. I did find a couple rods to profile, but seeing this Chevrolet pickup truck made the whole trip worthwhile. The giant two-ton-truck wheels (single in back instead of dual) tucked up into the wheelwells, along with the modest chop, give the truck a huge Tonka toy look, while the dechromed body and flat off-white/white paint scheme appeal to the less-is-more aesthetic. Doodlebugging
By Jen Dunnaway

Whenever I start to worry that my junk car habit is getting out of control, all I have to do is ask my ex in NY what he’s working on. Some of the cars he drags home–they can make a pile of dinosaur bones look roadworthy. This weekend he sent me some pics of his latest acquisition: a Ford Model A doodlebug that was thrown in free with a bunch of Model A parts he bought off Craigslist. He’s super stoked about it–he tells me a doodlebug refers to a Model A or similar car that’s been cut at the cowl and shortened. Apparently a lot of folks modded their cars this way during the Depression to serve as home-built tractors. Well, it’ll be pretty sweet if this one ever gets to the point where it can plow a field. I have faith! More pics below the jump.

Cadillac VSR

The other day I blogged about this cool computer rendering of a 21st-century hot rod. Yeah well, screw renderings–this one’s real! This car was designed for SEMA by GM Performance Parts and Race Car Replicas, and unlike the last hot rod I drooled over, this one is packing a proper drivetrain. Under that long sleek bonnet lies a 6.0 liter (most likely the LS2) putting out a modest 400hp. In my opinion it doesn’t look as cool as the Delithium, but real beats rendered every time. Check out the rest of the gallery over at Jalopnik.

Best of SEMA: Hot Rods
Hot rods just keep getting bigger at SEMA every year, especially with the whole traditional scene gaining traction. And the best thing about rods is that they’re infinitely customizable–on these cars, most stuff is purpose-built, and no two are alike, or even similar. For our Best of SEMA voting in this category, we’ve got a whole pileup of wild hot rods–and I have to warn you, Fords are overrepresented, just as they are in the hot rod scene as a whole. At this point it’s a toss-up between the Popeye Model A roadster, the ’31 Studebaker from the Toyo booth, the Nissan-powered Ford Z-Rod, this crazy Peterbilt rat rod, and the Viper V10-powered ’32 Ford. What’s your favorite?

Nissan's SEMA Booth Dominated By Z-Rod
I was totally floored by the fact that Nissan chose to make this ’32 Ford the centerpiece of their booth this year—it stole the spotlight even from a nearby GT-R. But the special thing about this highboy is that it’s basically a Z-car with a roadster body—the engine and drivetrain components are almost entirely 300ZX. It’s got the 3.0L motor that makes 240 hp, and it hooks up via a Nissan 5-link rear end and halfshafts, adapted to a custom fabricated suspension. There were a ton of other great rides in the Nissan booth as well, including the GT-R and the new Maxima. See all the pics after the jump.

Burning Pipes
By Jen Dunnaway

Check out all these awesome 50s and 60s cars lighting ‘em up for a flamethrowing contest. I think the chop-top Caddy with the flames routed out through the front fenders is pretty cool. Who do you think should take the win?
