This Just In: New on the Net

By John Coyle

Last night, one of the guys here watched a couple of drunken idiots knock over his motorcycle while driving away from a club. He got the plate number, but guess what? The cops won’t do anything about it. How much does that suck? Anyway, here’s the news:

  • Someone in Moscow has been randomly setting fire to cars. So far, no Russian domestics have been set aflame, so the mysterious arsonist is probably trying to make a statement. Just another reason to spring for garage parking. English Russia
  • Ma Mopar’s plan to cap gas prices doesn’t seem to be reeling in the customers. Maybe they should just try giving people guns. What could go wrong? Jalopnik
  • Here’s a cool gadget that’s certain to get you in trouble: Autoloc’s Hidden License Plate Kit. Just hit a switch and your digits slide out of view. While gear like this is cool for Bond’s ride, he also has a license to kill. CarScoop
  • Lots of Yanks who go to France come home talking about how much the locals hate Americans. But while they may hate people from the United States, some of them sure love our cars. Just look at what they go through to get them over there! New York Times
  • While the gas deal might not be working out for Ma Mopar, a new survey proves they can build a car as fast a Toyota. Now, the only problem is figuring out how to sell them as fast. Motor Authority

Guess the Donor Car

By Rich Truesdell

Automotive Traveler

You never know what’s going to show up at Cars and Coffee, the now legendary Saturday morning sunrise show ‘n shine hosted by the good folks at Ford’s Western Regional Headquarters in Irvine, California. In by seven, out by nine, you’re likely to find an ever-changing selection of vintage Ferraris, contemporary exotics, vintage cruisers, classic muscle cars and if you look hard, pre-production prototypes, driven in without camo, recently from Lincoln (MKS), Hynudai (Genesis sedan and coupe), and Mazda (Mazda 2). And with all variations of Cobra-bodied kit cars, it should come as no surprise that newly appointed importer HPE based in nearby Costa Mesa selected Cars and Coffee to premiere their AMX07, a body kit conversion designed for the first generation 1990 to 1997 Mazda Miata MX-5s that gives it the appearance of a car driven by a particular English spy with a license to kill.

Double-0 D'OH!

By David

aka Highspeedhijinks

In the name of art and excitement, the director of 007′s latest adventure Quantum of Solace decided that wrecking another Aston Martin DBS was that the best way to climax his opening credit chase. This makes three cars now destroyed, for those who are keeping track. At least this one was intentional. The scene has Bond being chased by two Alpha Romeos through the windy roads of the Italian Alps. Taking a quick look through the pictures that Jalopnik provided gives me the feeling that Bond wins this chase, though barely. Bond wrecked the DBS in Casino Royale within minutes of hopping into that car as well. Maybe he should cut back on the martinis if he’s going to be doing so much slick driving.

Bentley Parteners With Penguin to Design New Bond Book

By John Coyle

Editor

In the movies, James Bond has always been associated with marques like Aston Martin and Lotus, but in Ian Fleming’s novels, 007 favored Bentleys. So to celebrate the release of Devil May Care, the latest addition to the James Bond canon, Bentley has partnered with Penguin to release a special edition. The $1500 tome will be finished with the same leather used for Bentley interiors, printed in the style of ’60s owner’s manuals and delivered with a 1:43 scale replica of the R Type Bond drives in the book. In a cool twist, the book will be set during the Cold War, which in my opinion, is the best period for a Bond adventure. More details over at Penguin Books.
