If you’re a fan of the Ken Block Gymkhana videos, you’ll be stoked to learn that he’s teamed up with the Gymkhana Grid series to bring you two live events in 2010. The Gymkhana Grid will be held August 7-8th in Hollywood Park, California and the Ken Block Invitational will be held December 3-4th at Irwindale Speedway in Irwindale, California. Full press release with more details on the series after the jump!

San Diego, July 1, 2010: In 2008, Ken Block shook up the automotive world with Gymkhana Practice–the first in a series of viral videos. Seventy million views later, Block has teamed up with the Gymkhana Grid series to bring the action to you live. Starting with two events in 2010, these races will be lined with purpose-built, high-powered machines, piloted by some of the worldʼs biggest names in motorsport, pitted against each other in a heads-up race against the clock. The courses (co-designed by Block himself) are guaranteed to provide big smoke, long slides, excessive speeds and a challenge to all who battle for the crown.

“Ever since we filmed the first Gymkhana clip, Iʼve been itching to not only get my professional racing friends to be able to come and play with me in this incredibly fun, sideways and technical motorsport, but also to make it possible for amateur drivers to participate, too ” says Block. “And Gymkhana Grid does exactly that.”

Founded by Christopher Willard, the Gymkhana Grid series seeks to be more than a one-off event. With years of organizing track days under his belt, as well as co-founding the Redline Time Attack series, Christopher shared Kenʼs passion for the sport and sought his expertise on course design, as well as overall rules and regulations. The two then presented the Gymkhana Grid Invitational, as well as an inaugural grassroots event.

The first event, being held August 7-8th in Hollywood Park, CA, will feature pro and amateur racers competing head to head, and testing the course layout with anything from a rear-driven
sports car to all-wheel-drive sedans. For those new to the sport, there will be workshops and schools to help grow the awareness of gymkhana on the grassroots level.

Then, on December 3-4th, the first Gymkhana Grid Ken Block Invitational will kick off at Irwindale Speedway in Irwindale, CA. Competitors will range from rally racers like Travis Pastrana and Dave Mirra, to drifters like Vaughn Gittin Jr. and Tanner Foust. This will be the first event of its kind, promising to not only provide competitors with a new and exciting racing format, but also to give spectators a true all-out, tire smoking, sideways sliding race. And all of this is just a glimpse of what will be coming from Gymkhana Grid in 2011.

Ken Block brought the term “Gymkhana” to the masses through viral videos such as Gymkhana Practice (2008), and Gymkhana Two: The Infomercial (2009). These two videos set the standard as to what Ken saw as a modern interpretation of a traditional form of racing, and in turn gained tens of millions of views worldwide. With its origins dating back to a style of horse racing (also known as gymkhana), the sport requires not only physical driving skills, but mental training as well. Courses are set up with both precision driving and high speed in mind, with a pre-determined sequence of drifts, figure 8s, donuts, and slaloms that the driver must memorize.

While the sport of gymkhana has a niche following in countries such as Japan and England, Gymkhana Grid introduces much bigger courses designed for high-powered cars and versatile drivers who can call upon a varied list of motoring skills, from drifting, rally racing and road racing. Only the most well-rounded racers will prevail.

We found this thread on VW Vortex. Maybe Ken Block has not sufficiently wowed his new Ford partners enough as of yet. Perhaps the economic downturn has slowed the sale of DC Shoes and flat-brimmed hats. Maybe his upcoming gymkhana event series couldn’t find funding (uh, what we mean is, what gymkhana event series?).

Maybe this Craig’s List post is a joke. Maybe it was all just a dream. And maybe, just maybe, this seller is serious. Maybe he – yes, he, because there is no way a woman would do this to her car – is on drugs. Perhaps he’s on some medical grade nitrous, or meth, or maybe even something that we don’t know about. Maybe something that would require an ice cube up the butt. But then, Coyle is only one who would know anything about that.

All we have to say is that to be truly ironic this seller should have applied KB’s Subaru livery to a Ford Escort wagon. Get it? On second thought, it doesn’t get much more hi-lar-ious than the green underglow and hidden trailer hitch. That is, unless you were to release a remix of the original Gymkhana video, with machine guns and Sid and Marty Kroft explosive effects. Yes, that would rock us like a hurricane.
But when Ken Block makes a little mistake, it results in a rally car on its side. Yup, being a race driver is pretty awesome. Fortunately, he’s fine and seemed pretty relaxed about his recent wreck during the WRC in Mexico.

It was big news when Ken Block decided to switch from Subaru to Ford, and lots of people—even Hitler—had strong feelings about the move. Personally, I love the 2010 Fiesta, and think the Blue Oval’s little hot hatch looks pretty sharp wearing the Monster livery. For the record, I also think “Vibrant Thing” is proof positive that Q-Tip should have never quit Tribe, but that’s a whole different thing. Anyway, we’ll have to wait until March to see this baby race in WRC, but it’ll make its competitive debut this Friday at the start of the 2010 Rally America Championship. Two more photos after the jump.

I’m still coming off my experience at the SEMA show held about a week ago in Las Vegas. I have been tasked with coming up with the five best off road vehicles at the show. Well, a lot of attendees will choose a high riding pickup truck, but they are virtually useless off road because the axles could not articulate enough. Inside the main halls of the show, there were a lot of jeeps and other vehicles that were on display, and it was very difficult to single them out for nomination. On that note, here are my five distinct off road nominations:

- The Awesome Ken Block Subaru WRX Tracked Vehicle
- This Outrageous Viper Powered Sand Buggy
- The Mickey Thompson Rock Crawler with Wildwood Brake System on the axle.
- The ICON CJ3B
- The TAC-V JAMMA
