Kranze Has the Best VIP Demo Cars

By Ben Schaffer

The Real JDM

Wed’s Kranze sub-brand always seems to have the best demo cars to show off their rims. Although I’ve already talked earlier about their ridiculous widebody LS430 from a few years earlier, this more modern LS600h is worthy of a new mention. In 2010, this is perhaps a perfect example of how to build a VIP car. (Picture taken from Bulletproof’s trip to Tokyo during set-up day at Tokyo Auto Salon.)

Lexus IS Aerodynamic Study – D1 Version and Super GT Designs

By Ben Schaffer

The Real JDM

The Lexus IS still looks great in various modified conditions and takes to re-shaping very well. I happen to like this rendering quite a lot. There are some great ideas in here to enjoy. See more after the jump!

Heaven, Hell or Hyundai

By Sam Barer

Sound Classics

I wrote here a few months ago about my wife’s decision to replace her 1998 Olds Intrigue. I detailed my grand plan to give her the 2006 Toyota Avalon while I procured myself a slightly used Mercedes S550 as a new daily driver.

The interesting thing about the Mercedes S550 is that, without expensive and rarely-equipped options, it offers fewer bells and whistles than a minivan of half the price. Consequently, it was near impossible to find one with adaptive laser-guided cruise control and a back-up camera, at least one with a reasonable number of miles that wasn’t being sold by a dealer at a typical narcotics kingpin’s profit margin. I did finally find a low-mileds 2008 S600 (the model with all the bells and whistles as standard, powered by the fire-breathing bi-turbo V12 and usually purchased new by professional athletes and CEOs) offered at a sell-it-today price of $72,000, but getting it to my door and licensing it would have put it at $80,000. Still, at nine in the morning on one beautiful day I had the deal ready to go.

It’s funny how spouses have the ability to bring us back to ground-level. My wife reminded me that no matter how far under-value I could buy the S600, I was making a poor financial decision. She also pointed to the other cars in the garage and asked if I really needed another expensive car for myself. This was the point when I again got to swallow hard and use my signature line “you’re right, I’m wrong, I’m sorry, I’ll change!”

It had taken me months to get to nearly buying the S600, but thanks to my wife’s decisive nature, by 5pm that night she was at Titus-Will Hyundai signing for a brand new 2010 Genesis 4.6 Sedan–for her! A Hyundai? On my property? What the hell?

Ward’s Surprising 2010 Interior of the Year Awards

By Chris Bicknell

Bick66

For years now, Chevrolet has been known for producing vehicle interiors with substandard materials and an overall lack of attention to detail. The fit, finish and quality of even enthusiast cars such as the 4th gen Camaro and the C5 Corvette felt cheap and didn’t match the performance, quality or aesthetic appeal of the vehicle as a whole. This has baffled me since as drivers, don’t we tend to spend most of our time looking at the inside of our cars? That being said, I was pleasantly surprised to find not one, but two Chevrolet models on the list of Ward’s top 10 interiors of 2010. Amazingly enough, the Camaro and Equinox share this list with name plates such as the Porsche Panamera, BMW Gran Turismo and Infiniti M56. Although I don’t really agree with all the cars chosen or the way they’ve been classed, it’s nice to see think that GM might be making some moves in the right direction. Follow the jump for the complete list with categories and pictures.

What new 2010 interior would make your top ten list?

Snap: Consumer Reports Burns Lexus SUV With “Don’t Buy” Warning

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

It’s no big whoop that SUVs tip over easily–of course they do–but you know things are bad when Consumer Reports, that bible for anyone who ever wanted to buy something expensive that they didn’t know anything about, singles out a particular SUV for boycott on the grounds that it tips over even more easily than the others. The target of CR‘s wrath is the GX 460, Lexus’s blimpiest SUV, which during track testing kept exhibiting the pesky habit of lifting wheels off the ground under hard cornering and then getting squirrely when the stability control didn’t respond quickly enough. Might not seem like that big a deal, except that CR deemed the rollover risk serious enough to justify issuing its first outright “Don’t Buy” in nine years. It’s a vote of no-confidence that delivers another black mark against an already-floundering Toyota, and comes on the heels of CR de-listing a number of Toyota models from “recommended” status over gas-pedal issues earlier this year.
