CarDomain Obscure Muscle Car Parking Lot: the Lincoln Mark VII LSC
By Jim Brennan
UDMan
Welcome to the CarDomain Obscure Muscle Car Parking Lot, a regular feature which aims to expand the notion of what a muscle car is, and to have some civilized discussion while doing so. After years of square-lined formality, Lincoln’s premium coupe took a dramatic new direction with the 1984 Mark VII. Though it shared a platform with the bustleback Continental, this swoopy semi-fastback was derived from the new-for-’83 Ford Thunderbird/Mercury Cougar. The result was smooth, distinctive, and more visually aerodynamic than any previous Mark. It also marked the return of the fabled “Hot Rod Lincoln” in the form of the LSC. Can this be classified as a muscle car? Reintroducing the Lincoln Mark VII LSC.

This weeks Showroom Showdown ended up being a bit closer than I thought it would be, but the Genesis still won, with 57% of the vote. Looks like RWD and horsepower carries the day on CarDomain. Anyway, stay tuned for another match up next week, and keep those Showdown suggestions coming!

This week’s Showroom Showdown pits a RWD V8 import vs. a FWD V6 domestic! Thanks to Michael for suggesting this match up! The Hyundai weighs 4,006 pounds and has a healthy 368 hp on tap. The Lincoln weighs 4,127 pounds and has just 270 hp. Both cars start just south of $40k. So, which would you choose?

Is Shiny, Is Good
By Ron Honig
WaytooFurious
Check out this picture of a gorgeous trio of Fords that my friend David sent me. The interesting thing is that the reason they are so shiny is not because of their paint, they actually don’t have paint. It’s because they are made from stainless steel. It all began in 1936 when the Allegheny Ludlum Steel Company got together with Ford. They produced a Deluxe Sedan made from stainless steel as a marketing tool for the new metal. It was a success and Ford and Allegheny went on to produce other models such as a 1960 T Bird and a 1967 Lincoln Continental. In total 11 stainless steel cars were built. Get the full story here. Thanks for the tip David.

Great Conversation With J Mays
By Rob Einaudi
Editor-in-Chief
This morning Katherine and I had the opportunity to sit down and talk to J Mays, Group Vice President of Global Design and Chief Creative Officer at Ford. This is the guy who is largely responsible for the 2005 and 2010 Mustang, the New Beetle, etc., etc. It’s not every day that you get to talk to an automotive rock star. But Katherine and I got the opportunity and we weren’t going to waste it!
First of all, to follow up our most recent Showroom Showdown, I asked him what he liked better, the new Camaro or the new Challenger. He didn’t hesitate: he immediately said Challenger. He said that the Camaro is “too much of a caricature” and seems like a “stunt” that somehow made it to production. He said the Challenger is a much more balanced car, although he took the opportunity to say that both cars are too big. Which lead us to the Mustang. Continue reading…

Cool Old Press Photos: The '57 Lincoln
By Brian Lohnes
BangShift.com
We’re going to mark this one under styling gaffe. The big news for Lincoln in 1957, as seen by these photos and the press release, was the introduction of a quad-headlight front end. The move to four lights was interesting on a couple of levels, the first of which was the fact that four headlights were illegal in most states, hence the mention in the release that the lights can be used according to state law. The reasons for this are unknown to us at this time; despite our research we can’t really find a definitive answer as to why quad headlights were considered dangerous. There was probably some arcane political reason behind it. Continue reading at Freiburger’s Junkyard

Our Latest DUB Winner: Terrance's Lincoln Continental
By John Coyle
Editor
Right from the factory, this generation Continental is one of the coolest cars ever. The proportions are perfect, the interior is cavernous, and the factory suicide doors are perfect. But that didn’t stop Terrance from making some improvements—check out all the work he’s put into this piece of classic iron! Now, we don’t know which member car is going to wind up in the thick, glossy pages of DUB magazine, but we think you can agree this ride would look right at home there. For details on how to enter your car, head over to the official DUB contest page—and don’t delay! There are only a couple more chances left to win!
