GM has just announced that Caddy’s new 550 horsepower hot rod has broken the Nurburgring record for a production sedan. Take that BMW! The blistering time of 7 minutes and 59 seconds was set this morning, and GM will release full documentation in the coming days. Stay tuned!

Everything's Bigger In… Moscow?

By John Coyle

Editor

Here’s a strategy ripped straight from the "go big or go home" playbook. To advertise its new M-Series in Moscow, BMW has constructed a humongous 65,000 square foot billboard, and mounted actual vehicles to its face. Even in pictures, the effect of the enormous ad is stunning, so in person, it must be something else. More pics after the jump. via CarScoop

Young Driver Consults BMW Forum Before Wrecking M5

By Jen

Editor

Members over at m5forums.com didn’t think anything of it when they received an "innocent" question from an 18-year-old M5 owner about gear clunk that occurred when paddle-shifting at 140 mph—some of them even doubted that "AmericanM5" was for real. Scolded last Friday by forum participants for his apparently idiotic driving habits and his lack of car knowledge, AmericanM5 reacted with good-natured deference—and then promptly ran the M5 (which turned out to be his dad’s) sideways off the ramp of a private runway in Florida, got airborne and sailed into a tree, killing himself and four of his friends. Oops. It must suck to be m5forums.com, who I’m sure are going to get blamed one way or another for the actions of this genius. Full story at Edmunds.

Cross-Country Champ Alexander Roy!

By John

Editor

While we were down at SEMA, I got a chance to talk to Alexander Roy, the crazy [Expletive Deleted] who recently broke the New York to LA speed record in his hyper-trick M5. Total travel time? A blistering 32 hours and 7 minutes! As it turns out, he’d apparently tried to contact CarDomain about sending someone to document the ride, but some wires got crossed, and we never actually got to talk turkey. Alex, I can assure you, if I’d gotten your call, I would have thrown a temper tantrum until the brass would have let me come along. Seriously! Anyway, he’s over the accidental diss, and even hooked us up with a couple copies of his memoir, the Driver. Look for a review here soon, and watch the interview for tips on how to prepare for a cross country blast!

New Transcontinental Driving Record

By Rob

Editor-in-Chief

Looks like we have a new transcontinental driving record (31 hours and four minutes) by Alex Roy, the Team Polizia dude, and Wired has a great writeup on it. Jalopnik threw a big hissy fit about it yesterday. I don’t know, if you’re independently wealthy, have an M5 and decent driving skills, it seems like a half-way reasonable pursuit (though I’m not sure I’d want to deal with using these). But as always, my official stance on these kinds of things is take it to the track.
