Drift Miata From Italy

By Speedhunters

Car Culture At Large

It’s always interesting to see how passion can push people to create very unique cars, and this Miata from Italy is the perfect example. The owner and avid reader of Speedhunters, Filippo Pirini, has been working on his little Mazda for 3 years and plans to have the car ready in the next year or so. Filippo will compete in one of the Italian drift championships so has carefully chosen every modification to help him create a nice set-up for drifting. Continue reading at Speedhunters

"The Standard" of the Slammed Miata

By Speedhunters

Car Culture At Large

This past month we’ve seen a whole slew of automobiles dropped to insane lowness. This Miata is no different. This car is like the crispy cornered pieces of brownies that only a select few actually enjoy. And just like any good brownie recipe, the best ones are always the most simple.

Let’s be honest here: this car is as Mazda OEM stock as possible. The engine still retains the stock 1.6L. The exterior additions to this car has been a Mazda OEM front R-Package lip, rear R-package lip, and a OEM hardtop painted glittery silver. Really, the only things not stock is the now rare RSR GTII ExMag exhaust system, Jackson Racing Header and the Boss Frog roll bar. Continue reading at Speedhuners

Grassroots Motorsports Celebrates 25 Years

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

Our friends at Grassroots Motorsports just put out their 25th anniversary issue. That’s a pretty big accomplishment for a totally independent, family run operation, and my hat is off to Tim Suddard and his crew. If you’re not a subscriber or can’t make it down to the newstand, they made the entire issue available in digital format. The issue’s feature article is their list of “the 25 best cars ever.” It should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with the magazine that the Miata made the top spot, but I was pleased to see that the Mustang made the #4 slot and that the Volvo 240 squeaked in at #25. There’s also a great article on the 24 Hours of Lemons, and I was very happy to see that two CarDomain members made the list of “three cars that should have sucked but totally didn’t”–the UDMan’s Corvair and the Team Size Matters Fury.

MX-5 Superlight Concept

By Speedhunters

Car Culture At Large

With fall fast approaching, that means it’s time to once again start looking towards the auto show season and the concept cars that come with it. One of the concepts that’s already been revealed is the Mazda MX-5 superlight concept for the Frankfurt Show. As it’s name suggests, this car takes the standard MX-5 and strips away “excess” weight , doing away with things like a windshield or top. The resulting car is a unique creation that’s one my favorite concept cars in recent memory – the raw spirit of the MX-5 turned up to eleven. Hopefully it comes with a pair of leather driving gloves and some goggles.

Nostalgic Cars at Simpson Design

By Antonio Alvendia

Antonio Alvendia

We’ve had mega coverage of the Pacific Northwest’s incredible drift scene lately, so how ’bout a stroll down the path less traveled with some Olde World European classics? These are cars you won’t see hanging their tails out in a wall-scraping slide, but that doesn’t mean they’re any less fascinating. To find them, we had to hop onto one of Washington’s many state ferry boats and hitch a ride to Whidbey Island, about an hour north of Seattle and home of Simpson Design. Snapped these pics last week while walking back to my car after work. I thought they looked kind of cool together.

StreetFire member b00st3dmx5’s motor was shot so he decided to finish it off for good. I think David Wallens is crying right now.

Five Guilty-Pleasure Cars That Are More Fun To Drive Than You'd Expect

By Sam Barer

Apexstrategy.com

I ran a story on my Four Wheel Drift site recently titled “Five Classics That Aren’t Nearly As Fun To Drive As People Think They Are” that proved to be pretty controversial. Call a baby ugly and evidently you’re bound to be read the Riot Act from a number of angry parents.

To even out my Karma (or Car-ma, as the case might be), I’ll let CarDomain readers know that there are also five guilty-pleasure cars that are much more fun to drive than people think. We’ll see if you all agree with my picks.

By Katherine Helmetag

Has it really been that long?!? 2009 marks twenty years of the roadster goodness known in the US as Miata. Mazda’s booth had concepts and spec racers from each generation of the MX-5 platform.
