But this car is not so much about the outside but more about what is underneath it’s outer shell, so I’ll concentrate on that. The chute and Hoosier tires are a sure sign that this car has been built with only one purpose in mind.

Horrible car listings make my brain hurt. Is it ever okay to list a total junker as “in fair condition” when it “needs welding around the shock housing”? A dismal example of dodgy listing is this ad on Facebook for a supposedly all-wheel-drive 1991 Mitsubishi Eclipse. First thing that caught my attention was the “Limited Edition” badge: I worked at Wal-Mart long enough to know that they sell this exact sticker there, and that the only thing limited about this car is power (that’s a whole can o’ worms itself, more on that in a bit). There was no such thing as this designation for the Eclipse. The “turbo” badge is another Wal-Mart special–I had the same one pasted on my laptop! Hey, at least he admits that’s fake. And, unless I’m horribly mistaken, the base model did not come with all-wheel-drive.

The badging isn’t all that’s just effed up. I know the seller personally and I know the car. That engine is a tired one: it burns more oil than a Mazda rotary and the transmission has failed more times than an amateur half-court throw. The wheels look like they came off a Dodge Caravan.

Here’s the listing:

“ATTN CAR FOR SALE!ATTN::: CAR FOR SALE…. 1991 Mitsubishi Eclipse Limited Edition AWD

Car has 176K miles on it… Just had 480.00 worth of Transmition work done to it (New clutch, pressure plate, throw out berring and Fly Wheel)

New Gaskets put on the exaust recently.. Valve Cover Gasket

Am asking 500.00 for the car.. Obo… Ive put a lot of money into the car and know what its worth.. so dont low ball me…

P.S Need to have welding done around the shock housing… Clarks on Versailles Rd in Fran kfort will do it for 125.00…. It has about 60% tred life on the tired and less then a year old on the breaks!

SPECS:
1.8L SOHC Engine (according to the dyno it puts out 185hp)
5 speed standard shift transmition
Manuel Windows and Locks
CD Player with AM/FM Radio
Limited Edition car has 8 speakers ( two tweeters in dash.. two in front doors, two in pannel by back seat and two behind seat in trunk)
Car gets aprox 30mpg around town and 32-34 mpg on the highway depending on how fast you drive”

Okay, I don’t claim to know everything about cars, but I know for a fact the 1.8 he’s talking about puts out less than half that. At the crank. I also know he’s never dyno’d the car, because there isn’t one within a hundred miles and he doesn’t care enough to go out of his way. I’d say the only correct thing about the listing is the transmission being a stick and the windows being hand-crank.

Here’s the kicker: earlier in the day he writes about it, claiming it makes an ominous popping noise and hesitates significantly under acceleration. Brand new spark plugs covered in soot, and issues with overheating. The shock tower is in such bad shape that at any given time, it can collapse and kill you dead! He even writes (and also left out) that three mechanics tell him it’s unfit to drive. all of which he fails to mention in his listing. I’m not sure this is even legal.

You know what’s worse? I’m considering buying the car to save the kid’s life.
