Indoor Drift, Very Sundance

By Jen Dunnaway

The following is a rough cut from Vernal Equinox, an arty drift film (did  you ever think you’d see the day?) coming out next month. Don’t try this at home–and especially not in your school gymnasium, you’ll probably be expelled. The point-of-view angle below is cool, but this teaser gives you better views of the car.

NYIAS: The New A-Team Van

By Jim Brennan

UDMan

There’s a new A-Team  movie out this summer, and if you grew up on the original series, the ultimate icon for the show was that tough black GMC van. Well, the van is back, and I for one am glad to see that the producers didn’t substitute the original with an Express. This van is so badass, and who knows,  it may very well give the vanner some traction. Well, maybe not. More pics below the jump!

Hang On To Your Seats: Fast & Furious To Be Screened With D-BOX

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

The upcoming Fast & Furious will be the first major theatrical feature to be shown with the seat-shaking D-BOX Motion Code technology, promising moviegoers “an unmatched realistic, immersive experience” which presumably includes life-like, bone-jarring car wrecks and tubs of extra-buttered popcorn dumped down shirtfronts. But wait: the only viewers who will get to enjoy these visceral treats on April 3rd are the lucky few within driving distance of two D-BOX-equipped US theaters– the Mann Chinese 6 in Hollywood and UltraStar Surprise Pointe 14 in Surprise, AZ. The rest of us will have to schlep off to the normal moviehouse and get our seatbacks kicked the old-fashioned way. Anyone in Hollywood or Surprise want to write us a review?

What's Your Favorite Car from an 80s Movie?

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

I think I’m going with the ’64 Malibu in Repo Man. Ryan had never heard of Repo Man, which made me feel old. Here’s some trivia on the car from IMDB:

When filming began, they only had one 1964 Chevy Malibu. It was stolen a couple of days into filming, forcing the film crew to scramble to find a replacement. Shortly after finding a replacement, the original was recovered by the police undamaged. This was fortunate timing because about a day later Fox Harris severely damaged one of the Malibus by accidentally plowing it into a gasoline pump! In the carwash scene, one of the gas pumps is clearly severely dented up and damaged. This is the pump Fox plowed into in a previous take.

No special effects were used to make the Chevy Malibu glow while parked at the repossession lot. Instead, the car was completely coated with 3M reflective paint, at an approximate price of $600 per bucket.

So what’s your favorite car from an 80s movie? Post a link to a pic!

Flash of Genius Movie Trailer

By John Coyle

Editor

Back in the ’60s, Robert Kearns invented the intermittent wiper, and while his design wound up on fleets and fleets of vehicles, he had to fight all the way to the Supreme Court to get credit for his invention. The actual story is really, really sad, but something tells me the Hollywood version will make it into an inspiring David vs. Goliath piece, instead of the soul-crushing, heartbreak-filled tale it actually was. Hey, you can’t blame them. Check out the trailer.

Car Chase From Bullitt linked to Google Maps

By John Coyle

Editor

When I watch the chase scene from Bullitt now, all I can really think about is how the crew had to completely detune the Charger so it wouldn’t totally walk away from the Mustang. But it’s still a great fun, and I really dug how Seero user Steve_McQueen linked the footage to a Google map. It takes a while to load, but it’s worth the wait. Enjoy.

Anyone Seen the New Get Smart Movie Yet?

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

The first reviews I’ve read make it sound pretty bad. And the trailer looks pretty weak, too. I wrote last year about how excited I was to see it, but now I think I’ll just wait for it to come out on DVD. Maybe I’ll just skip it altogether.

From time to time I bore people with a story about how I almost got a Sunbeam Tiger. It was one of those weird situations where they seller wanted to get rid of the car but didn’t seem to have a price in mind. This was about twelve years ago, the owner was my boss and I was totally broke. So I just threw out a low ball offer, and I think offended him. Anyway, it was British Racing Green just like Stephen’s car below, and I’m still kicking myself.
