Danny Thompson Building 300 MPH Capable Mustang

By Mark Gearhart

powerTV Media

To this day, the name Mickey Thompson still reverberates in the automotive world, as the racing pioneer served as one of the most influential figures in automotive history, leaving behind a timeless legacy that will never be forgotten. Along with his accolades and innovations in the sport of drag racing, Thompson set more speed and endurance records than any other man in history during his driving career. And the records he established at the fabled Bonneville Salt Flats will forever live in infamy. In 1958, he powered his twin-engine HEMI-powered dragster to a 294 MPH world record, and in 1959, returned with the infamous “Challenger I” setting four world records with a speed of 345 MPH. He then cemented his place in history in 1970, becoming the first driver to exceed 400 MPH. in addition, he set a slew of world records driving three different Mach 1 Mustangs.

5R002

According to Cooper Naitove at NorthWest Auto Salon, you’re looking at:

…the first GT350 R-model ever to be produced and the second GT350 in general. This car was the beginning of Shelby’s dominance with Mustangs in the B-production racing world at the time. (he had already been VERY successfully racing Cobra’s prior to the Mustangs and also became extremely successful racing GT-40’s and later Trans-Am cars) Immortalized in everything from video games to artwork to famous photographs, to diecast cars, the famous number 98’s racing heritage is world renowned. After changing hands a couple times between independent racers, and winning the southwest national championships in B-production in 1967, 1968 and 1969, being left to die in a Mexican desert, and doing a stint in a U.S. private collection, it’s now on loan to the Shelby American Collection, a private museum in Boulder, Colorado, where it will stay until it begins its restoration to all its past glory.

Tim Grillot’s Turbo 4.6L Mod Motor ‘65 Fastback Mustang

By Mark Gearhart

powerTV Media

While perusing the grounds of Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Illinois during the NMRA/NMCA Superbowl of Drag Racing back in July, we stumbled upon this absolutely gorgeous 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback that we simply had to learn more about. Because not only does it have looks that could kill, but a rather unique and powerful engine combination resting between the fender wells, making this one inspiring ride that could grab the attention of any car guy.

The pride and joy of Milan, Illinois’ Tim Grillot, this Fastback has been a several year labor of love to arrive at the stunning final product that you see here, and despite setbacks along the way, Tim never wavered in his desire to complete what he states is the car that he always wanted. Prior to acquiring the car as a bare shell, Tim owned a two-seat Factory Five Cobra, but as a highly skilled fabricator by trade, grew restless at the notion of a vehicle that he didn’t play a role in the creation of. It was then that Grillot’s wife, then pregnant with their first child, suggested that he sell the Cobra and purchase a Mustang, thus gaining a back seat for the little one to join them in their travels while still maintaining the essence of a fast, high performance muscle car. The Cobra sold shortly there after, and for Tim, it was game on.

Should Jeeps and Mustangs Have “Refined” Interiors?

By Rob Einaudi

Jalopnik is all excited about the revised interior in the 2011 Jeep. And most of the automotive press did backflips over the 2010+ Mustang interior. Honestly, though, I prefer the older, less “refined” interiors in the 2007 – 2010 Wrangler and the 2005 – 2009 Mustang. I think that Jeeps and Mustang should be more plain jane and less “soft touch.” Below is a pic of the 2011 Wrangler interior. I’ve pasted interior pics from the 2007 Wrangler, the 2011 Mustang GT and the 2008 Bullitt after the jump! Check ‘em out and let us know which interiors you prefer!

Hemmings Find of the Day: 1986 Mustang SVO

By Dan Strohl

Hemmings

Of all the special edition Mustangs that Ford has been trotting out in the last several years and that recall earlier Mustang variants (California Special, Boss 302, all the Shelbys), I don’t think Ford’s ever going to come up with another SVO-type Mustang, even with all the talk nowadays of installing smaller turbocharged engines in place of larger naturally aspirated engines. So will that make the existing Mustang SVOs, such as this 1986 Ford Mustang SVO for sale on Hemmings.com, more desirable? From the seller’s description:

1986 Ford Mustang SVO 86, black ext, grey int., RARE car Comp, prep, 83 made. 39000 km, canadian one, very nice, new tire, origninal car.

Camaro Wrests Sales Lead Back From Mustang

By Brian Lohnes

BangShift.com

Like a pair of heavyweight prize fighters trading blows, the Camaro and Mustang continue to fight for sales and performance supremacy here in America. According to the dudes at Camaro5.com, 6,321 Camaros left dealer lots in August as opposed to 5,570 Mustangs. Obviously the inhabitants of the Camaro-centric site were happy with this news.

The Dodge Challenger (which we still think is the hottest looking car of the troika) seems to be withering on the vine in the face of competition, moving a scant 3.283 units.

While it is awesome that there is a sales battle to write about, we need to put things in perspective. In 1987 Chevy sold 137,760 Camaros which is an average of 11,480 per month, verging on double current volume. If that isn’t a reality check on where the automotive marketplace is right now, we don’t know what is.

We’ll stop being a wet blanket now and remind ourselves that it is still possible to walk into a showroom and score a hunk of American iron with more than 400 hp, in three different styles. That’s good news any way you slice it.

Hit the link below, these dudes at Camaro5 are fancy! There are all kinds of charts and graphics. Hell, it looks like a Ross Perot infomercial!
