Frank Manzo on Verge of Decade Sweep at Maple Grove
By Rob Einaudi
Editor-in-Chief
Top Alcohol Funny Car legend Frank Manzo is eyeing a tenth consecutive victory at Maple Grove this weekend with his Lucas Oil Chevy Monte Carlo.
“Winning all those races in a row is an unbelievable thing that I could have never dreamt of happening as a young kid. I would love to do it this year and say that I won every race in the decade, but I know I’m going to have to be even better and work harder for it this year. The other racers are going to work a little bit harder because I’m sure they’re tired of hearing about me.”

Check out the video below, and if you’re interested, here’s the longer uncut version with less music and more engine sounds.

Cacklefest at the 2009 Holley/NHRA National Hot Rod Reunion
By Brian Lohnes
BangShift.com
Here’s the radical cacklefest that went down on Saturday at the 2009 Holley/NHRA National Hot Rod Reunion. Since it was held at night, you get header flames and everything! It even brought tears to the eyes of Big Daddy Don Garlits.
After three days of sweltering heat, crushing humidity, and all-out horsepower warfare, the event has drawn to a close.
BangShift.com has been working hard and late to make sure we’ve gotten the best content from the event to the website in the quickest time possible. While we have miles more video to edit and we’ll be back tomorrow with another installment, for now we wanted to pass along a bunch of photos that document the close of the event.

Rambler Love: Hemmings is Full of It
By Dan Strohl
Hemmings
This past Sunday, the Wally Parks NHRA Museum at Pomona was host to the 3rd annual Socal AMC gathering, a show so big that we haven’t seen its like since there were still AMC dealerships (speak for yourself – DS). The bulk of the interest was around the AMX and Javelin models, but there were still Ramblers, Gremlins, a Concord, a Pacer, and the most gorgeous restored Hudson pickup we’ve ever seen. As a bonus, if you were part of the show and entered a car there, you got to go poke around the museum for free. Sweet! Read the rest of the story and check out a bunch more pictures over at Hemmings.

Sheik Pours Millions into Drag Racing
By Rob Einaudi

This year, 22-year-old Sheik Khalid bin Hamad Al-Thani of Qatar has invested $10 million into the Al-Anabi team of Alan Johnson. It’s been great for the sport, which has been hit hard by the recession. The team is competitive, too. In its third outing last month, Al-Anabi’s Top Fuel dragster driven by Larry Dixon Jr. won the AC Delco Gatornationals. Read the full article at the Wall Street Journal. Via BangShift.com

First Challenger Drag Paks Delivered to Racing Legends
By Rob Einaudi
Editor-in-Chief
I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to see these Challengers with the Drag Pak hit the track. The first two were delivered to racing legends Big Daddy Don Garlits and Larry Griffith. I just found pics of Griffith tearing his down. Ma Mopar is building 100 or so of these to meet NHRA requirements, and apparently all of the 2009 cars are sold. My guess is that a bunch of them will be mothballed by collectors, which is kind of a shame. But hopefully we’ll see the Garlits and Griffith cars on the track soon!

Whoa! Spectacular Dragstrip Mishaps at the '09 March Meet
By Jen Dunnaway
Editor
Mark Rebilas is clearly a heck of a photographer, and at this year’s March Meet he did a great job of putting himself in harm’s way to capture some truly astonishing mayhem out on the strip. He’s got a whole heap of crazy wreck photos posted up on his blog, including an animated sequence of this Mopar funny car blowing its whole body into the air as its guts continue ondown the track in flames. Check out the photos here–and thanks to Brian at Bangshift for finding ‘em!
