Rhys Millen will attempt to beat his own world record of 12 minutes, 9 seconds at Pike’s Peak this year in the PM580 Pike’s Peak Hyundai. This 1,850 pound, 750 horse power V6 beast is designed specifically to conquer the 156 turns to the top.

The infamous Pikes Peak Hill Climb is a mere two months away and Rhys promises bring the hill climb record back to the Millen family. But not in a production based Hyundai but rather an unlimited class car, powered by a Hyundai engine, aiming to break sub 10 minute record. Even the current Pikes Peak unlimited class record holder Nobuhiro “Monster” Tajima also has that record in his sights this year. Pikes Peak is going to be something to definitely follow this year.

We were dissapointed Hyundai didn’t leave room for its V8 in the Genesis Coupe, so it’s cool that Rhys Millen is dropping one in. Of course, this is going to be a lot more than a simple engine swap—the new powerplant is going to be mounted in the middle of the car. The 500 beast will make it’s official debut at SEMA, but Bill Wood got a sneak peak.

A couple of weeks back,  Ryan and I got a chance to go over and tour the Turn 10 studios, where the developers and testers are putting the finishing touches on Forza 3. Ordinarily, getting out of the office in the middle of the day to go play video games is a sweet enough deal by itself. But the really cool part?  We got to take the tour with drifters Rhys Millen, Dai Yoshihara, and Chris Forsberg, who were all in town for Formula D Seattle! Obviously we were both curious to see how their real driving skills would translate to the virtual world, and we got plenty of opportunities to see them behind the wheel.

While Nads and the StreetFire crew were down in Vegas for Round four of the 2009 Formula D Series, they got a chance to chat with some of the sport’s biggest names about what’s been a—um, how should we say it… —surprising season. Former champ Rhys Millen didn’t even qualify for Vegas, two-time champ Tanner Foust is down in the dumper points wise, and Samuel Hubinette has lost his Mopar sponsorship. The fourth round of the 2009 Formula Drift Championship is in the books and what a scorcher it was. I think I’m supposed to write some sort of witty quip about the triple digit temps here, but truth be told my brain is still somewhat melty. And not from the heat, but rather the stunning points shakeup that went down in Vegas. Coming into Sin City Darren McNamara was leading in points but a mechanical with his Falken Tire Sears Auto Center Sky finished his weekend before it even started. Another shocking DNQ was that of 2005 champion, Rhys Millen. Just when we thought the points chase couldn’t be flipped any more Tanner Foust goes in it to win it after a rare DNQ at round three. Hit the video to see it all. And no matter what Tanner and Stephan may say, I am not a pussy, their NASCAR V-8 just happens to scare me a little bit, that’s all.

Fortunately, at two years old my boy doesn’t care too much about the 2009 Formula Drift points standings (he’s more of a Monster Jam fan). However if he were old enough to care this would be a hard question for me to answer, much like, “Why is the sky blue?” Or, “How do you drive stick?”. Coming into the fourth event in only a seven round series Rhys Millen is languishing in 12th while Tanner Foust is in an uncharacteristic 18th in the standings. This ain’t to say that these guys can’t drift with three FD championships between them – Tanner being the two-time defending champion. In fact, since FD’s inception in 2004 there is only one other champion – two-time winner Samuel Hubinette – and for the ultimate WTF he is currently without a ride going into the fourth round at Vegas. Both Rhys and Tanner have wheel cred and their suckage comes down to one word – development. It’s why Braun is crushing McLaren and Ferrari in F1 and it’s why Rhys and Tanner can’t find their mojo this year. I got a firsthand look at Rhys Millen’s Hyundai Genesis bodykit packages at SEMA last year, and I thought the car was  pretty sweet. From what I can tell, the ride he’s racing in Formula D is sporting the same carbon fiber panels, and in addition to being drift-ready, it’ll be able to handle the Pike’s Peak Hill Climb and run time attack. But while a lot of development has gone into the new machine, Millen hasn’t been having the best season. The former champ is currently running 15th in the standings, and in this clip, he doesn’t sound too happy about the judging. Hopefully, he’ll have some better luck in New Jersey next weekend.
