Journey Home From Detroit: Rain and More Rain

By Stephanie Porteus

HotRodHoney

Our journey home across the Midwest following the Woodward Dream Cruise seemed to be exactly the opposite of the rest of our trip. The gloomy weather made the general mood bleak as the old Buick charged through the rain. The vacation had gone so fast perhaps we were a little bit bummed, or perhaps it was the idea of heading back to reality. Continue reading…

Journey to Detroit, Day Three: Woodward Dream Cruise

By Stephanie Porteus

HotRodHoney

The day of the Woodward Dream Cruise was upon us, and even though it was raining we hit the touchless car wash to spuce up the Bu-hog before heading for Lake St. Claire to grab some breakfast. From there, we’d cruise up along the lake toward Pontiac. Hit the jump to read all about our day at the Dream Cruise!

What Did You Do This Weekend?

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

I took my Escort GT up over the border to Vancouver on an end-of-summer mini road trip to be with my grandma on her 90th birthday. Before I went, I threw on a header gasket to fix a leak that had been causing my Escort to be enveloped in a cloud of exhaust whenever it came to a stop, and swapped out my never-quite-right E3 spark plugs for some NGK V-Powers. Between fixing the leak and installing the new plugs, the car felt like it gained about 15hp, restoring the low-end torque I’d been missing for months and completely getting rid of the bog-off-the-line issues I’d been living with. I went hammer-down the whole way up and back, and it was awesome to be out on the open road with my original road-trip car all squared away and feeling like a million bucks.

How about you? What did you do this weekend?

Journey to Detroit, Day Two: The Henry Ford Museum

By David Clarke

Day two of our trip to Detroit started early, as we wanted to get started on the Henry Ford Museum and Rouge factory tour as quick as possible. After a quick Dunkin’ Donuts stop and a Starbucks run for Steph, we headed north to Dearborn, but within a few miles of driving, we noticed something strange, like out of a Twilight Zone episode. There were no foreign cars on the road. Not one. After several miles,  we finally spotted one older beater Accord. But needless to say, we were feeling a bit of culture shock. Where we live in NY, it seems like 7 out of every 10 cars you see are imports, and most of the domestics are 5 years old or older. But in the Detroit area, you’re not doing your civic duty unless you’re running a newer American machine. This, we thought, was American pride at its finest, and what better place to see it than in Motor City? For more on our trip to the Henry Ford Museum follow the jump.

Journey to Detroit, Day One: Woodward Or Bust

By David Clarke

highspeedhijinks

The iconic Woodward Dream Cruise is one of the top automotive events of the year, sponsored by several of the Detroit-area towns that Woodward Ave runs through–vendors, manufacturers, and droves of people line the street to watch up to 40,000 vehicles of all kinds parade by during several days worth of festivities. This year, I wanted to be part of this iconic automotive event, but it was going to be no small feat, being that I live 650 miles from Detroit. Sounded like the perfect reason for a summer road trip. Roadside Misadventures

By Stephanie Porteus

HotRodHoney

Ever had one of those drives where your car will just not stay running and go where you want it to? It was a beautiful day at the beginning of the summer, and my boyfriend Dave and I decided to take my Mustang Ruby up for a cruise to Lake George. But no sooner had we started on our journey when the car started to act up. A few weeks ago she had trouble with her spark plug wires popping off of the distributor cap until they were replaced with MSD 8.5′s, so we were under the impression that the problem was solved. Boy, were we wrong. Read more…

CarDomain Bloggers Hitting Up Woodward Dream Cruise!

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

Dave and Stephanie, along with Dave’s grandfather, are driving from New York to the Motor City in Pops’ 1970 LeSabre for the phenomenal Woodward Dream Cruise. They’ll also be hitting some car-buff points of interest like the Henry Ford Museum and the Ford Rouge assembly plant along the way. The trek has been going well so far–last I heard, they’ve made it to Ohio, and that was yesterday. Expect some great pics and blogs next week from one of the greatest gearhead events of the year!

California to New York in Four Minutes

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

This cool little time-lapse video was shot by Jonathan Bohren:

After finishing up 6 months of work in California before grad school, my dad met up with me for company on my drive back home to New York.

I mounted my Rebel XS to the center rear headrest and hooked it up to my laptop, which triggered a single capture roughly every 30 seconds. This is a time-lapse video composed from those pictures.

We spent five days and drove 3054 miles, from California, through Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and finally to New York.

Radar Detectors: Do You Use One?

By Chris Bicknell

Bick66

Until recently, the thought of owning a radar detector had never crossed my mind.  But shortly after receiving a $358 speeding ticket in my Corvette, a fellow CarDomain member suggested a laser-shifting and radar-detecting system that I later purchased and had installed by the guys at Corvettes of Auburn. Now I don’t condone reckless driving or excessive speeding but I will tell you that Jen and I made ridiculously good time on our trip from Seattle to L.A. last weekend, and being virtually invisible helped to avoid any attention from the local highway patrol or aerial speed enforcement.  My Escort Passport–complete with three laser shifters, one large frame-mounted radar detector, central processor and cabin control module–appears to work extremely well both for detecting conventional radar in time to avoid being tagged, and scrambling those laser guns the cops like to point at fast-looking cars.  How about you? How do you feel about radar detectors?

Summer Road Trip: It’s About Time!

By Chris Bicknell

Bick66

Now that summer is in full swing, many of us are hitting the road to enjoy the fantastic array of open highways that North America has to offer.  One of the most amazing stretches of road in the world is the system of highways that wind and twist their way along the West Coast of Washington, Oregon and California. Jen and I are packing up the Corvette and leaving tonight for 10 days of Pacific Coast cruising, junkyard tourism, and SoCal beach bumming.  How about you?  Any road trip plans still ahead at this point in the summer?
