Speed Racer:Did it Suck?

By John Coyle

Editor

Probably, it did. Too much CGI, too much stupid green-screen acting, too much crap dialog. I haven’ t watched it, but regardless of how terrible the reviews are, I will. So I want to know: Is it waste of time or not? Best critique gets a t-shirt.

Win a Mach 5 Inspired Corvette!

By John Coyle

Editor

Even though I’m pretty sure the Speed Racer movie is going to be all gunked up with crappy CGI, I’m going to reserve judgment until CarDomain’s company-sponsored field trip to check it out. But even if the flick completely blows, it won’t change the fact that the Mach Five is a sweet ride, and while this C5-based version isn’t entirely faithful to the lines of the Speed’s machine, it looks dope. If you agree with me, head over to the Race for Speed Racer site, and you can enter to win it. The contest will culminate with ten folks racing go-karts, and the winner walks with the car. Pretty cool, huh? Three more pics after the jump.

Latest Speed Racer Trailer

By Jen Dunnaway

A new trailer for Speed Racer surfaced yesterday, involving a bunch more of the colorful CGI silliness that the movie is quickly becoming known for. There’s a whole lot of barrel-rolling and even a cool sequence featuring the Mach 5′s self-regenerating tires. Woo! Check it out the hi-res version at Yahoo.

DiCaprio to Produce Live-Action Akira!

By John

Editor

Along with Star Blazers and Speed Racer, Akira introduced anime to American audiences, and catapulted gritty Japanese cartoons into the mainstream. Set in post-apocalyptic New Tokyo, the plot revolves around a teen motorcycle gang leader forced to deal with the results of a government human experimentation project. But the stars of the flick are the hyper-trick bikes gang members ride. The replica below was built by a fan—will the filmmakers do as good a job? With DiCaprio signed on to produce, there won’t be any shortage of cash to render the wicked cityscapes and incredible chase scenes which made the original so exhilarating. Hopefully, the live-action version doesn’t become a CGI mess, as the trailer for Speed Racer seems to indicate that interpretation will be. Seriously guys, Akira has already been a cartoon! Here Comes Speed Racer!

By Jen

USA Today has realeased some of the first stills from the new live-action Speed Racer movie. The latest in a rash of toonstalgia films adapted from comics and Saturday-morning cartoons, Speed Racer is based on the popular 1960′s Japanese cartoon series of the same title. The film’s special effects are purported to be pretty spectacular, but no word yet on whether that lovably inane theme song will carry over from the series.
