American Muscle At Its Finest

By Tony Castellano

Tcassa

A small but determined group of gearheads braved the wild weather and displayed their American beauties right in the heart of Melbourne this past weekend. A good mixture of old and new American iron was on show, with my favorite being this spotless ’68 Camaro. More pics after the jump!

Year of the Thunderbird

By Chris Borrelli

Chris Borrelli

Back in 2002 Ford brought back its iconic Thunderbird. The Thunderbird was given a retro design (actually starting the whole retro look) making it seem as if it was taken straight from the 50s. The Thunderbird was discontinued in 2005 after dropping sales (possibly due to introduction of the redesigned Mustang). Well cry no more T-Bird lovers, it’s said that the T-bird will return in 2012 with a retro look, keeping the classic two seater design. Via Thunderbirdnest  Thanks ___nes___!

How Many Cars Have You Gone Through?

By Alex Vickers

Katakuna

I’m only seventeen, yet I’ve gone through my fair share of cars over the last few years. My first car was a 1994 Ford Thunderbird LX with a 4.6L V8, sunroof, faded black paint, perfect interior, and enough grunt to make small Hondas think twice. At 200,000+ miles, it ran like a champ, but personal reasons caused me to sell it back to the previous owner.

CarDomain Obscure Muscle Car Parking Lot: the 1957 Ford (Supercharged) F Series

By Jim Brennan

UDMan

Welcome to the CarDomain Obscure Muscle Car Parking Lot, a regular feature which aims to expand the notion of what a muscle car is, and to see if a Supercharged bomb can be included. Ford was fighting for dominance at the stock car tracks throughout the country, and was neck and neck with it’s crosstown rival Chevrolet. Little did anyone know, Ford had an ace up it’s sleeve. Lets discover the 1957 Ford Supercharged “F” Series. And no, that was not the truck!

1989 T-Bird FAIL

By Alex Vickers

Katakuna

A few days ago, I went with my father to look at a 1989 Ford Thunderbird that a coworker of his was selling. We were fixing the brakes on the left side rear wheel, and had just gotten the wheel back on when “BANG!” The jack goes straight through the floorboard. This was bad for two reasons. For one, my father, who is pushing fifty, has had two heart attacks in the last six years, and this gave him the scare of his life because he was under it not two minutes before. Second, that rusty junkyard special nearly came down on all three of us and rolled into the guy’s wife. After all this, the guy still had the nerve to try and sell us the car, which can’t go more than forty miles per hour before it cuts out. The tires were at least 15 years old, bald as Terry Bollea and had a lone white strip on the sidewall, a sad excuse for whitewalls.

For a car that’s twenty years old, the mileage wasn’t extremely high, about 164,000. The engine itself ran okay, save for a slight misfire and a clogged cat. If it hadn’t been so rusted out, I would have bought it myself (it was only $200, and even I can afford that). It would’ve made for a perfect Super Coupe swap. The interior wasn’t in bad condition, but the seats were caked with some ungodly material that nobody, not even the owner could explain. The car handled very well, but in its sorry state, even taking it around the block was one hell of a risk.

What about you? Did  you come close to buying a car only to find out that it’s a total bomb? Or did you buy that car and find out too late?

What Are the Worst Automotive Follow-Up Acts?

By Sam Barer

Sound Classics

Wouldn’t it be nice to live in a simple world where good cars are good, great cars are great, and bad cars are bad? Unfortunately, there’s a whole spectrum of gray between History Onyx and White Knight.

The most difficult cars to judge are often those models that replaced truly fabulous vehicles. Fair or not, some acts are tougher to follow than others. Just ask the Rolling Stones, whose 1973 number-one album Goats Head Soup(containing “Angie” (also a number-one) and “(Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo) Heartbreaker”) was bashed as a lame effort by critics and fans who had been listening to the band’s instant classic Exile on Main Street album for the last year.

Just like in music, there are plenty of good, bad and ugly follow-ups to great cars. To help sort out the reality from perception, I present Sound Classics’ list of the Toughest-Luck Classic Car Follow-up Efforts.

CarDomain Obscure Muscle Car Parking Lot: Ford Turbo Coupes, Mustang SVO, T-Bird Turbo and Merkur XR4Ti

By Jim Brennan

UDMan

Welcome to the CarDomain Obscure Muscle Car Parking Lot, a regular feature which aims to expand the notion of what a muscle car is, and to throw all conventional thinking out the window while we’re at it. This time, instead of highlighting one obscure piece of muscle, I thought it was time to review a new type of muscular performance car, offered in three distinct flavors, all from the Ford Motor Company during the 80s. Instead of using V8 power, these cars were equipped with a snorting, growling, turbocharged 4 cylinder engine, with outstanding handling, and monochromatic good looks. Let’s look at Ford’s attempt to re-invent the muscle car, with the Ford Mustang SVO, the Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe, and the Merkur XR4Ti.
