In an amazing showing of bowling-ball sized stones, 26-year-old Travis Pastrana set the world record for a rally car jump on New Year’s Eve, flying his Subaru 269 feet over water and landing on a barge in the harbor of Long Beach, California. The record blew away the old one set by Ken Block at 171 feet. Pastrana had to throw the car sideways and slam it against a wall at the end of the barge to stop the car, as he said the ramp was slick with dew.

Home Depot Center hosted the qualifying today for the X Games Rally Super Special. Because the FMX Super X configuration holds court in the arena until Saturday night Rally qualifying was confined to the outer perimeter tarmac section. To no one’s surprise it was an all STI/Fiesta battle. However what was surprising was that the Fiestas dominated taking three of the top four spots. Indy 500 winner and IRL Champion Kenny Brack put the Olsbergs MSE Ford in the top spot but it was only good enough for 5th place on the grid. Rally racing is cool stuff with cars flying through the air and hurtling over all sorts of terrain at high rates of speed. This particular car happens to be driven by the crazy nut Travis Pastrana. Travis apparently hits an undulation in the road incorrectly and launches this car into a series of rolls like we have never seen before.

The in-car cuts are wild. Note that the driver and co-driver are talking to each other before they even stop rolling. We can only guess that the co-driver may have had some reservations about climbing into that car again.

Pastrana has literally jumped out of an airplane without a parachute so this may not rank that high up on his scale of death defying feats, but for mere mortals like us, it tops the charts.

This happened over a month ago, but somehow, I missed it. In this clip, X-Games Champ Travis Pastrana hydroplanes his bike for 110 feet—the water underneath him is five feet deep—then hits a floating jump and backflips his bike. Is this incredible or what? Autoblog via Gizmodo
