Tim Grillot’s Turbo 4.6L Mod Motor ‘65 Fastback Mustang
powerTV Media
While perusing the grounds of Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Illinois during the NMRA/NMCA Superbowl of Drag Racing back in July, we stumbled upon this absolutely gorgeous 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback that we simply had to learn more about. Because not only does it have looks that could kill, but a rather unique and powerful engine combination resting between the fender wells, making this one inspiring ride that could grab the attention of any car guy.
The pride and joy of Milan, Illinois’ Tim Grillot, this Fastback has been a several year labor of love to arrive at the stunning final product that you see here, and despite setbacks along the way, Tim never wavered in his desire to complete what he states is the car that he always wanted. Prior to acquiring the car as a bare shell, Tim owned a two-seat Factory Five Cobra, but as a highly skilled fabricator by trade, grew restless at the notion of a vehicle that he didn’t play a role in the creation of. It was then that Grillot’s wife, then pregnant with their first child, suggested that he sell the Cobra and purchase a Mustang, thus gaining a back seat for the little one to join them in their travels while still maintaining the essence of a fast, high performance muscle car. The Cobra sold shortly there after, and for Tim, it was game on.

Check out the crazy rear-mounted twin-turbo setup on this ’09 California Special. It hasn’t been to the track since the install, but it sure sounds good.

Video: Fastlane’s Turbo 5.0 2011 Mustang Makes 543 RWHP
powerTV Media
The new 5.0 liter engine from Ford is proving to be a hot commodity among aftermarket shops. By itself the engine makes 412 horsepower and 390 ft-lbs of torque. Let a bunch of aftermarket specialists at it and you better be prepared for some seriously impressive torque numbers. And the engine is surprising even the most optimistic engineers.
Why just 6 psi you ask? Well the new 5.0 has a very high compression of 11.0:1. Forced induction is a fan of low compression engines (usually around 9.0:1 or even lower) which allows the engine to run higher psi. For an otherwise stock engine though, those are some great numbers. Fastlane makes a similar kit for the 2010 Camaro, which through an automatic transmission makes around 530 whp. That 5.0 looks better and better every day.

CarDomain Obscure Muscle Car Parking Lot: Ford Turbo Coupes, Mustang SVO, T-Bird Turbo and Merkur XR4Ti
By Jim Brennan

Welcome to the CarDomain Obscure Muscle Car Parking Lot, a regular feature which aims to expand the notion of what a muscle car is, and to throw all conventional thinking out the window while we’re at it. This time, instead of highlighting one obscure piece of muscle, I thought it was time to review a new type of muscular performance car, offered in three distinct flavors, all from the Ford Motor Company during the 80s. Instead of using V8 power, these cars were equipped with a snorting, growling, turbocharged 4 cylinder engine, with outstanding handling, and monochromatic good looks. Let’s look at Ford’s attempt to re-invent the muscle car, with the Ford Mustang SVO, the Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe, and the Merkur XR4Ti.

1990: When Daytona Started with K
By David Belau

In my last post, I wrote about how much I like my Plymouth Neon. I drew quite a bit of criticism and many even called my manhood into question. While I don’t really understand how these things are connected, I think the current post might reaffirm my manliness. It’s about the car I owned before the Neon, the car that went 260,000 miles and that I still miss: my 1990 Dodge Daytona.

1966 Dart GT IRS Project Journal Part 5
By David Belau

Last week I talked about all the little details that make this thing go and stop. If you’ve been waiting to see if all this nonsense actually performs, this is your week. I’ll show you the good, the bad and the ugly.
Before I get into this week’s post, a couple people have asked what the weight difference is between this set up and the live axle. I gained about 100 lbs, but I also upgraded from a wimpy 7.25 rear end to a stronger 8.8 Ford. If I redesigned the structure, I think I could lighten it up by at least 25 lbs.
My family has a long history of going to car shows. One in particular I have always enjoyed more than the rest. It’s a Father’s Day show at the Yreka, CA fairgrounds put on by the Siskiyou Cruisers. It’s in the shade, under the trees. Everyone drives down early in the morning and has breakfast. In short, it’s a great time. I had a goal to finish the car about a week before the show-to work out any bugs. (Murphy loves me for some reason.) I met that goal. Continue reading…

Welcome to the CarDomain Obscure Muscle Car Parking Lot, a regular feature which aims to expand the notion of what a muscle car is, and to have some fun in the process. This week, the featured car is a pioneer of sorts. It is the first production turbocharged V-8 built in America: the 1962 Oldsmobile F-85 Jetfire. Continue reading…

Here’s another great one from Luis in Puerto Rico, who tells me the school bus runs low 11s. One more video of the bus after the jump.
