What Did You Do This Weekend?

By Chris Bicknell

After work on Friday, Jen and I packed up the Corvette and headed North to spend the weekend visiting with her family in B.C. It’s the first time we’d really gotten the Corvette out of the city, and it was a good dry run for the drive we’re planning to take to Orange County later this month. We spent the afternoon at Pick-a-Part in Chilliwack on Saturday, and on Sunday evening enjoyed cruising White Rock’s beautiful beach-front main drag, which turns out to be a popular strip for local gearheads of all denominations anytime it’s as beautiful out as it was this weekend. Hit the jump to check out some of the rides we spotted there.

What Did You Do This Weekend?

Early Saturday morning I drove the Impala into North Seattle to enjoy the 18th annual Greenwood Car Show–stay tuned for the full photo gallery later on.  While at the show, I finally managed to diagnose the Impala’s unintended acceleration problem: it turned out the powerful 383 had sheared off the left-hand motor mount during some spirited driving, and the motor was then able to torque far enough to sporadically stick the throttle mechanism.  I stopped by the parts store on my way home from the show then spent Sunday afternoon leveling the motor and replacing both mounts.

This weekend I finally took the time to tune my ’66 Impala’s carburetor.  After swapping the primary and secondary jets, metering rods and piston springs, the stroker motor that Jen and I built last year finally seems to be running better than ever.  There’s still a lot to do before the 2010 Greenwood Car Show in Seattle on Saturday June 26th but I’m glad to have gotten a jump start on it.

I had a very fulfilling weekend: swapped out a tie rod end on my diesel Escort, watched a little NASCAR on TV, made some burritos, and toured the all-new Griot’s Garage facility (more on that in a bit). I also went and checked out a junkyard I’d never been to before: Pull A Part in Tacoma. There was a ton of cars there, with a decent selection of older vehicles. The place was the usual seasonal rowboat-worthy lake, and it seemed a little pricier than some of the other U-Pulls I’ve visited in the area. But I found everything I was looking for there, and will be happy to give them some repeat business.

The Seattle algae was building up on the van so I had to hit it with the pressure washer.  After pressure washing it I couldn’t resist hitting it with the foam canon for its second batch in a year and a half. I’d love to go at it with the clay bar but that would be a little too much work.  As for the pressure washing, I’d say that I lost a solid 10+ square inches of paint off the rear doors where the paint is chipping.

My weekend started early Friday afternoon, when I drove my Corvette to Drift Office in Auburn, WA to meet Rob and Jen for a little dyno testing and video shooting. Bob and Nathan from Drift Office ran the big Dynojet while we tested to see how much power gain the new ACDelco iridium plugs and 8.5mm MSD Super Conductor wires would give my Corvette over its stock equipment. Then Vince from Trifecta Performance custom tuned the Corvette’s PCM for a net rear wheel gain of 26hp and 21ft-lbs of torque. Subsequently, I spent the rest of my weekend trying to keep my right foot off the floor.

I finally managed to get all four of my cars together in one place at one time, along with all three of Chris’s. This necessitated pulling my Concord out of storage, charging up the Eagle’s battery, and finishing the fuel pump project on my diesel Escort, but in the end the photo shoot was great motivation for getting everyone running and roadworthy and out into the sunshine.

A dry weekend in the Northwest finally gave Jen and I the perfect opportunity to try out our new car care products from Griot’s Garage. We spent both Saturday and Sunday washing, clay barring, polishing then waxing a few of our cars.  How about you? What did you do this weekend?

I charged my Impala’s battery and took on the simple task of changing the front right turn signal bulb on the ‘Vette. It was the first time for me that changing a light bulb involved removing a wheel, but all in all it was pretty simple. How about you? What did you do this weekend?
