The Perils of Vinyl Wrap

By Katherine Helmetag

Atomicalex

From two or three meters, this Z4 looks awesome. Then I got closer. Vinyl wraps are a really good way to try out new looks on your car without the permanence or cost of new paint, but be wary when you buy–the quality of the wrap will determine how good it looks and how well it holds up. This wrap had a number of obvious seams in it, and the panels gaps were visible due to the bright blue paint underneath. And about how well is it holding up? Find out after the jump.

Z4 Beats Out Boxster on CarDomain

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

After a bit of back-and-forthing, the Z4 edged out the Boxster as the preferred Euro-roadster in last week’s Showroom Showdown, taking the win by a solid margin of 39 to the Boxster’s 26. Hey, at least you were able to agree that chicks and middle-aged guys have fairly decent taste in cars. And props to HondaWonderBoy for just sayin’:  “Lots of Porsche Boxster trashers out there… Raise your hand… Now say “I can afford one”… ya, 95% of the hands are no longer up.” Lol, well said. Stay tuned as another pair of new cars face off in next week’s Showroom Showdown!

Porsche Boxster vs. BMW Z4: Which Would You Choose?

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

BMW announced pricing on the new Z4 last week, and they are definitely moving their roadster upmarket. The new car starts at $46k, which is Porsche Boxter territory. So how about a little Showroom Showdown? The Boxster’s flat 6 puts out 255 hp and the Porsche weighs in at 2,943 pounds. The Z4′s inline-6 produces 258 hp but the Bimmier is a bit porkier at 3,400 pounds. The Porsche is a mid-engine with a soft top, while the BMW is a front engine with a retractable hardtop. Which would you choose?

BMW Z4 at NAIAS

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

BMW unveiled their new Z4 at NAIAS, which comes with a retractable hardtop. No word on whether they will do another coupe. I like it a bit better than the previous generation, but it still doesn’t really do it for me. Let me know what you think. More pics after the jump!

New BMW Z4 Revealed

By Rob Einaudi

And frankly, I’m disappointed. It looks bloated. I know BMW knows how to design a decent roadster. Why couldn’t they give it the svelte proportions of the Z8? Full gallery over at Jalopnik.

Super Hot Z4 Coupe Also a Fire Hazard

By John Coyle

Editor

As soon as I saw this gorgeous Z4 Coupe, I made a bee-line for it. This little rocket is probably the sexiest thing to come out of BMW’s design studio since the legendary 507, and the widebody treatment on the one in the Yokohama booth looks wicked as hell. The electric green—is this actually a Porsche color?—is magnificent, and the fender flares make it look hot as hell. So I cracked up when I saw the red notice from the Fire Department on the windshield. In reality, the safety concerns probably aren’t as much about the car—it’s not leaking gas or smoldering or anything—as it is where it’s parked. But you have to admit this situation is pretty funny. Seven more photos after the jump.

Three New BMWs Spied in the Desert!

By Rob Einaudi

While out testing Dodge’s 2009 Durango Two Mode Hybrid in the Mojave Desert, Rich Truesdell spotted three new BMWs:  the 2010 7-Series, the 2010 Z4, and a twin turbo V8 version of the new X6 Sports Activity Coupe. More over at Automotive Traveler.

Turn Your Z4 Into A Z8

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

Carscoop found this pretty cool replica conversion kit on eBay, intended to dress up a BMW Z4 as the limited-run Z8 "supercar." I’m not familiar enough with the Z8 to tell if it’s a convincing replica or not, but the ad promises that "only you will know." At $5995 for the kit alone, it’s many, many times more than I’d pay for a whole running car. But I guess it’s still a lot cheaper than the $100,000+ you’d have to shell out for an original aluminum-bodied Z8.

Spied: 2010 BMW Z4

By Drew Johnson

Left Lane News

It’s been a while since BMW engineers have been seen out testing the next-generation Z4, but apparently the sports car’s development is still on track–despite being hidden for the last few months–as spy photographers spotted a Z4 prototype out testing on Wednesday. The latest photos don’t give too much away as the car is still heavily clad in camouflage, but we’ve got an illustration of what the final product will likely look like after the jump.

Since the new Z4 rides on the same platform as the 3-series, look for the Z4′s engine lineup to mirror that of the 3-series. A high-performance Z4 M will once again be offered and, for the first time, it is believed that BMW will offer a diesel-powered Z4. Unlike the current model, look for the next Z4–due out in late 2009–to sport a retractable hardtop roof to better compete with Mercedes-Benz’s SLK roadster. As we have reported before, the Z4′s production will shift from the U.S. to Germany when the new model bows. More photos at Left Lane News.
